Ive love my Rog Ally! Great performance and as long as you treat it as a PC then you'll be very happy. 99% of my "bugs" were user error. Like turning the fps limiter on AFTER loading a game vs doing it BEFORE. You have to do it before you boot the game for it to activate.
I already have a 2023 Rog Ally, Steam Deck OLED, Lenovo Legion Go, I just bought the Ally X yesterday I'm "upgrading" because of the bigger 80wh battery, faster and more RAM 24GB LPDDR5X running at 7500MT/s, I also prefer the black colour over the original white Ally. I love these handheld PC's if you can afford it go for the X although the OG Ally is still a solid device heck you could even save some cash going with the Z1 Ally. I went with the Z1 Extreme model. I love these devices they are so cool.
It's haiver than steam deck llLCD even and the reason because they put other bettery fact ally x is ally z1 put they just put other ram and and bettery life you can see that in videos of under ally x even if you had good skills for upgrading your device you can made ally z1 into ally x
My Ally had an issue where it shut itself off randomly. It become so constant that it rendered my Ally unusable. I sent it to ASUS, and they fixed it, zero issues, and at no cost.
I had to send my Ally for a faulty right analog stick (and bad SD reader I had been sitting on) about a month and a half ago, no issues getting it sent in. Not sure if they realized they needed to get their act together or not but I've gone through way worse to try to get things warranty repaired.
Comparing only the screens, I would pick the Ally X without a single doubt. 120hz@VRR IMO is much, much, much more important than OLED on these type of devices. And the screen on Ally is no way a bad one. The biggest problem here is the price, 800 bucks is way too expensive. Even being better, much better, I dont think its worth the price.
I have the first release steam deck and really curious if this is worth the upgrade. The only real downside for me right now is missing out on some of my FPS games while travelling.

I'd probably get this since I'm still debating on which handheld to get. I truly hate the OLED displays since darker games are so dark and it ruins the experience. Vs the Legion, I think the Ally feels more worth it.
The best driver to install for the rog ally x to work with one x egpu without crackling noise is the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, you can thank me later 👊🏽👊🏽
I'm tired of seeing all the needs OLED comments. It doesn't need OELD. VRR > OLED. Sure it would be great but the price is already high enough and the LCD panel that's in the ALLY is top tier. Also don't have to worry about burn in. Just in case I download games in desktop mode on the Steam Deck because the screen shuts off while downloading.
The VRR screen is already great screen with 100% SRGB. I feel like the "need OLED" guys came from the OG Steam Deck screen which was pretty poor, so the improvement was huge, not the case when compared to VRR screen in the Ally/X
Kevin is there anyway you could do a deep dive into the joysticks differences like the travel compared to a ps5 controller as these handhelds do t seem to have e the same range so your muscle memory playing on console controllers is off when using a handheld x

$800 without an OLED screen is kinda crazy. albeit the steam deck is less powerful, but it even having an oled screen at $250 cheaper
Steam makes money from game sales, allowing their pricing to be way more competitive. People seem to forget this alot
I am NOT paying 800 USD. That's way too expensive.
OLED uses a lot more power, which would make the battery less of a feature
With the same 1TB storage, it's 150 bucks cheaper, not 250
