You know, it's always cracked me up a little that you don't shoot your videos in a retro aspect ratio. I doubt anybody would appreciate it but it's always put a grin on my face. Aloha from another resident!
Russ is a Pedro The Lion fan? Guess there is proof he CAN get cooler (but I need to know his breakdown of the PTO, David Bazan, Seldom, Headphones, Overseas, Paperback rankings) Anyways, great content, great shirt. I'm gonna grab a drink, a snack and say "yeah, man, I wanna watch this video"
Okay, here goes. Bear in mind that I left WA state to join the Navy in 2000 so I have a lot of nostalgia for the old stuff 1. PTL, most especially Winners Never Quit and Control, and The Only Reason I Feel Secure. I do enjoy Whole EP and It's Hard to Find a Friend but they haven't aged as well for me. I don't like Achilles Heel very much, it's too haphazard although its opening and closing tracks are some of my all-time favorites. I listen to the new albums but the songwriting doesn't have that creative spark like it used to; the songs feel very cathartic for David, and I am glad he's making them, but their unflinching autobiographical nature aren't as relatable to me. 2. Headphones next, even though I wasn't super hip on them at the time of release, I can listen to it all the time. 3. David Bazan, especially Fewer Moving Parts and Strange Negotiations. The electronic releases never really caught on for me, even though I like their overall tone. 4. Overseas, I am a huge Bedhead fan so this was an amazing collaboration. I hope we see that elusive album #2 someday 5. Seldom was great, although let's be honest, just the first track on their first EP is a true banger, everything else is good but a little droopy. I wish Yuuki would make more music with vocals, because he was always really good at that. 6. I also liked some of the other Bazan projects, like Coolidge (I'm also a big Damien Jurado fan) and his drumming on Unwed Sailor's first EP, Undertow Orchestra was kind of cool too. 7. I would put Lo Tom at the bottom, it never really jived with me. I've tried many times but TW Walsh's songwriting style doesn't really catch my ear and I can hear his influence in all their work (and Achilles Heel, tbh) I don't know what Paperback is, please enlighten me!
@@RetroGameCorps If I could high five someone through the internet, it would be you, sir! (Born and partly raised in Bellevue/Kirkland) Not only is this an excellent ranking, but you got the Bedhead/New Year (had to) drop in there, which is icing on the cake (I grabbed the Hell House soundtrack they did at a Chicago show in....2004?). The Headphones placement is choice cause it's such a departure that also is rooted directly between the Pedro & Bazan mindsets. The earlier Bazan stuff I like cause you get that "working through" stuff and creatively is interesting. Paperback is kind of a lark, in a way? It's a solo period where he was performing under that name. The famous "power out" cover of Pakt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Can was from when he was touring as Paperback. Although, the random Man In Me cover he did in an alleyway is great Thank you so much for replying, Russ. This is the highlight of a very long week.
@@officiate Just going by the logic, they released a pro version in one year, there's already some new chips available for a revision. I don't see them keeping the X as their only handheld, they'll probably iterate it yearly to keep people buying.
@@MaedhrossssNah. The chips with new RDNA arent available yet. But Ally 2 will def be amazing. If Valve release a Steam deck 2 with new RDNA chip while still keeping a "Low res" screen it will be unbeatable tho. Even recent triple A will run native res 60
I love emulation with this powerful hardware its just a literal time travel tool for my inner child. I could scan through my entire childhood until the lastest tripple A games. Lol
I don't own one of these handhelds yet, but I'm in the market. Battery time is about the least important thing for me because the only time it would be on battery is when I was transporting it from one of my play areas (couch, bed, back porch, office) to another. Three minutes is probably more than sufficient, and matches about the max time my Switch is offer off AC power.
🤔 Do the power stats shown in the overlay include the display, speakers, fan, wifi, Bluetooth, ports, etc power consumption...? Pretty sure it's just the SoC. If so, those battery life estimates are way off, especially for the low end games.
The power stats are based on battery drain and total package power, which does factor in all of those components. Games were played at 50% volume, wireless services on, and 60% brightness.
How did MGS4 perform in the level after the one in the video, where you are in the jungle before the fist boss fight? It's way more intensive in my experience with way more stutters
I’m looking for an Anbernic that can handle everything up to Nintendo 64 and Saturn without much trouble. N64 and Saturn doesn’t have to be perfect, any suggestions? I’m new to this stuff.
Thanks for all the work on these in-depth reviews! Question: do you play all these games for the battery life amounts you have listed? OR do you play for a shorter time, look at the remaining battery life, and then extrapolate the full game battery life from there?
Could you make a video comparison between the Steam Deck OLED and the ROG Ally X regarding retro emulation (NES up to WiiU)? I'm really having a hard time deciding which I should get.
I would recommend the Steam Deck OLED if you are focusing on retro systems. The 16:10 aspect ratio is amazing for displaying 4:3 and 3:2 (GBA) in particular, and it will play up to Wii U with no issue (other than OG Xbox of course), and the trackpads come in handy for Wii (Wiimote) emulation. The Ally really shines with Xbox 360 and PS3 emulation.
@@RetroGameCorps Thanks for your response! I read on Reddit (posts from about 1-2 years ago) that the Steam Deck was not able to run everything smoothly. Has this been fixed as of now? So in other words, does every past Nintendo console run smoothly including N64 games such as Conker, the DS/3DS Pokémon games and the Zelda remasters for WiiU?
@@M_Dutch97 Yep, all those games will play just fine. Here is my most recent emulation showcase on the Steam Deck, so you can get an idea of what to expect: th-cam.com/video/23ZodrKmXuw/w-d-xo.html
This is great. I'm going to stick with the Steam Deck ecosystem because I really like everything about it, but I'm kinda taking this as a preview of what the next Steam Deck model will probably be able to do. Having most/all of 360/PS3 playable is going to be amazing. Also PGR4 was one of the earliest games in my career. Love seeing it get some attention

Russ, have you (or anyone else on this thread) encountered the issue where the back button (B button) brings up the menu in Emulation Station? I just got my Ally X and set it up with your Emulation Station for Windows guide. Everything works great, except I can't back out to the system select once inside a system library. The start button also brings up the menu as well. I have to shut down ES and restart it. I can't find anything about this online, so wondering if it is a newly introduced bug or something wrong with my Ally X? I also can't remap the keys as Emulation Station is not recognizing the start or select buttons for mapping, and I can't skip those.
The magic of asking Google the same question in a slightly different way! If anyone else stumbles across this post with this problem, know that this is happening due to the Control Mode in Armory Crate being set to Auto or Desktop. Make sure it is in Gamepad mode when using ES. Hope this helps someone!
Thanks!

You know, it's always cracked me up a little that you don't shoot your videos in a retro aspect ratio. I doubt anybody would appreciate it but it's always put a grin on my face. Aloha from another resident!
Definitely helpful, thanks bud
Idk why is not included but I’d like to see Vita also tested on this kind of devices, I think is worth for the form factor
Getting this next week for Thanksgiving when it gets on sale 😊❤
We're in the golden age of handheld gaming! The tech is amazing, and emulation has never been better. And as always, Russ is rad!
now if they could just focus on a line of handhelds with quality buttons we'd be set
Xemu is implementing vulkan so most games will get a huge fps boost
PGR on Xemu is a total heart breaker. I played that game to death back in 2002/2003 and would love to play it some more.
Looks great man. Can't wait for SD2, gonna stick with SD oled til then
Great video, like always! I want to get one, but I'd rather wait in order to get it for a better price!
I cannot wait to see what the future handhelds are capable of in the next year
I'd love to see Gran Turismo 5&6 next time in the PS3 section since those can be super tough to run.
I will get mine in a few days and I just came with one idea, playing pokemon reloaded with the asus rog ally must be incredible
Russ is a Pedro The Lion fan? Guess there is proof he CAN get cooler (but I need to know his breakdown of the PTO, David Bazan, Seldom, Headphones, Overseas, Paperback rankings)
Anyways, great content, great shirt. I'm gonna grab a drink, a snack and say "yeah, man, I wanna watch this video"
Okay, here goes. Bear in mind that I left WA state to join the Navy in 2000 so I have a lot of nostalgia for the old stuff
I hope we see that elusive album #2 someday
I've tried many times but TW Walsh's songwriting style doesn't really catch my ear and I can hear his influence in all their work (and Achilles Heel, tbh)
I don't know what Paperback is, please enlighten me!
@@RetroGameCorps If I could high five someone through the internet, it would be you, sir! (Born and partly raised in Bellevue/Kirkland)
Not only is this an excellent ranking, but you got the Bedhead/New Year (had to) drop in there, which is icing on the cake (I grabbed the Hell House soundtrack they did at a Chicago show in....2004?).
Although, the random Man In Me cover he did in an alleyway is great
Thank you so much for replying, Russ. This is the highlight of a very long week.
Got my carrot cake and coffee ☕ ready to watch. Feels good to have my X finally in hand
FOMO engaged
You can totally wait for the Ally 2 next year.
FOMO triggered again?
How sure are u it's releasing next yr
@@Maedhrossss Sadness ahead 😂😂
@@officiate Just going by the logic, they released a pro version in one year, there's already some new chips available for a revision. I don't see them keeping the X as their only handheld, they'll probably iterate it yearly to keep people buying.
@@MaedhrossssNah. The chips with new RDNA arent available yet. But Ally 2 will def be amazing.
If Valve release a Steam deck 2 with new RDNA chip while still keeping a "Low res" screen it will be unbeatable tho. Even recent triple A will run native res 60
Thank you CM Punk for the guide, will do it when my Rog Ally X arrive soon
love the new camera/4k res, looks markedly better on my TV
Well well done!
BFI & CRT shaders together... just make the games look way too dark without at least a 1000nit HDR screen.
Yeah definitely too dark
I have bazzite on my OG Ally, it's beyond awesome
Why do your start/select and command center/armoury crate buttons completely black without any glyphs?
You should try the mega bezels crt filter on retroarch, it’s amazing!
Why does emulations require so much power for such older games? (I'm really a noob to emulators and would like to get into it)
big screen and frontends. if you use the standalone emulator instead of retroarch/shaders it doesn't need as much power
Sold my LCD deck and will sell my Legion GO now that I have my Ally X in hand. Loving it so far!
so how was MGS4 on the original Rog Ally with the Z1 Extreme ? is it worth spending the 865 dollars for the Ally X ?
I’m looking for an Anbernic that can handle everything up to Nintendo 64 and Saturn without much trouble. N64 and Saturn doesn’t have to be perfect, any suggestions? I’m new to this stuff.
been waiting for thissss
@@RetroGameCorps Thanks, you've earned a sub :)
Is there a game compatibility list that mentions how well each game runs and which issues occur?
This is great. I'm going to stick with the Steam Deck ecosystem because I really like everything about it, but I'm kinda taking this as a preview of what the next Steam Deck model will probably be able to do. Having most/all of 360/PS3 playable is going to be amazing.
Also PGR4 was one of the earliest games in my career. Love seeing it get some attention
Bazzite is 99 % of steam os , just buy a powerfull handheld and install it
Think ill stick to my Legion Go as I prefer the bigger screen, chuck on the Anker power bank, happy days
I have the original white one z1 extreme but this one is a lot better with the better battery and more memory also - thing more RAM also !! and they switched the micro sd card and changed a few other things !! emulation on this one is so interesting . Thanks for this Video :D ok
!!
@@Digital_Kyle Not got an X, but that's good of you. Well done!
Hi Russ, is there any chance you could do a video of installing and setting up dual boot with Bazite and windows please
Any chance you might help us all out and see about making the L/R buttons less clacky? I tried but it was a no go with electrical tape. :(
