I think some of the notes he went down a fourth and up a fifth, rather than staying on the same note as transcribed, eg just towards the end. But it’s pretty murky down there so hard to hear! Great job on the notation, and thanks for bringing more wonderful music to our attention.

Trumpet player myself. It’s basically just humming while you play. You can hear he’s humming the top notes, playing the lower notes. It sounds great, but it’s actually not hard. What IS hard though, is to achieve his mastery doing so.
@@fcturner Humming the top note of two I can understand, but when he went to 3 or 4 notes (time stamp :46) can you hum all those extra notes?

@@LidClassic You *can* sing two notes at the same time if you get your vocal folds to vibrate in a particular way. I've done it myself though I can't control it very well. But that still doesn't explain the 4th note!
There's only 3 notes. The highest one is called a "resultant" tone and is simply an amplified harmonic. Hum a fifth above, nicely in tune, and the major tenth will "pop out." Hum a major sixth, the eleventh pops out. There are a few combinations that work. There was a good article in the old Brass Anthology that listed all the possibles.
He even holds up three fingers on his right hand and raises his eyebrows at that point to tell everyone.
I partially agree. I tried playing it and I'm convinced he's singing the top note, and the middle note is the difference tone. For example when he sings an Eb with a frequency of about 310Hz and plays a Bb with a frequency of about 116Hz, the difference is 194Hz which is a G (0:45). This works for all the middle notes (the Fs in bar 20 are actually Es). Top - bottom = middle.
The same maths works out for the sum tones you're describing (bottom + middle = top), though it doesn't really sound the same. I'd say the top note in the video has a vocal tone to it, and the middle note is a lot quieter than the others. The weird, unstable tone also sounds like two notes fighting each other and periodically cancelling each other out.
When you sing a perfect fifth like you described, it resonates much more stably, and the resultant sum tone is not that obvious (and interestingly the difference tone is an octave below the bottom note, which makes it sound even fuller)
The phenomenon you're describing is definitely a thing, just not exactly what's happening here.
By the way, the resultant tone isn't an amplified harmonic since none of the middle or top notes fit into the harmonic series. The fifths and major tenths would need to be an octave higher, and the others would need to be multiple octaves higher to be even close.

It's actually because with some skill you can manage to play AND hum at the same time, I've only managed to replicate it ONCE because of how much air and strength is required to even do the in measure i managed to replicate. as for the triad and four notes, it's most likely overtones and multiphonics. But in the beginning you're actually hearing his voice and the trombone at the same time
When you do certain intervals with multiphonics, the 3rd note clearly pops out if the two notes you play/sing are in tune. Singing a major 6th above the note you're playing (which he does in the clip) is the easiest one. You get the played note, sung major 6th above, and the note a minor 6th above that pops right out (resulting in a major triad in 2nd inversion). The "4th" one is an overtone of the root...that one usually isn't really audible.
Speechless! I've played at the bass trombone for years and can only dream of doing some of the things I've heard this man do on trombone. Oh well - we all do something different to earn a living - this guy just has fun doing it. Great job!

If you remember what he played, he played multiphonics on his trombone. Playing chords on a trombone was very hard to sound two or more notes in a single chord beat at the same time! Four notes is possible in a single chord on the trombone? That's impossible for what he played on the opening of the piece! Amazing brass harmonic man!

Four limbs. There's bound to be someone who could work all the slides independently. The real hard part is getting a controllable embouchure onto all four mouthpieces. I'm not sure I want to think too closely about that. Or why I know the word "embouchure".

Years ago when I was in high school, Bill Watrous came to a jazz festival at Purdue University in Indiana and did this in front of an entire auditorium. Every single one of us was gobsmacked. He did all kind of scales and harmonies and then proceeded to show us all how do to it. I used to try it all the time on my trombone but I was not nearly good enough. This was probably around 1998 or 1999.

My mum was neighbours with Judi, his wife, when she was a kid and saw James often. They needed rose petals for their wedding, and since my grandparents had a whole heap of roses they got the petals from them!
