This does only work with an audience above a certain level of integrity. Unfortunately some people don't realise that they: clap off-beat, standing in the way, being a nuisance to others, .... Luckily I think those people who enjoy Tim Minchin are usually above that level :) Tim in general has a quite high standard when it comes to his lyrics, music, topics and jokes. That's why he's such an amazing artist.

Tim actually considers himself really lucky and has had a very privileged life. His "pain" is mostly just him mocking grunge music. He is also an actor and he is bringing all his skills into one performance. That's why he has to settle for something trivial like "daddy never came to my ball games" to draw his emotion from. He played sports multiple times a week and his dad is a surgeon. Lol. If you want some context for this performance, watch him perform Rock and Roll Nerd.

Had the pleasure of meeting Tim Minchin toward the end of last year at an afterparty of an opera I was in. After some heavy cajoling from my colleague who happens to be a relative of his, he got on the piano and we all had a bit of a jam. People would just start singing jazz standards and the like and he would immediately start playing/singing and improvising on the pieces. I started in with some Moondance and he improved and scatted along and it was just fun as hell. Having been a fan of his for over a decade, it was definitely a wonderful moment for me.
