    Captain X, I am a computer tech and I deal with stripped screws almost every day.
    2 best tips I can give that are life changing for stripped screws
    1) Put a rubber band over the screw. jab the screw driver into the rubber band and twist. the rubber grabs the screw and will unscrew it. This tip totally changed my computer tech life for the better. I really suggest trying it.
    2) for extremely hard screws TAP the screw driver with a hammer or mallet lightly but repeatedly as you screw. mix this with the rubber band trick for maximum efficiency.
    - last tip from me for stripped screws. If you really really really cannot get a stripped screw out using these methods you can buy a cheap screw driver, cover the screw and the screwdriver tip in crazy glue, let it dry, then unscrew it.
    I've never asked for likes, but please like this so people can see, as the rubber band trick is seriously life changing.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yeah, I mention the rubber band option. I had not thought to try tapping the screw driver. The super glue option is also a good one.

    • @slimebuck
      @slimebuck 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the trick with tapping hte screw driver is not about hitting it hard, about soft constant tapping. Also, there is actual screw drivers that are DESIGNED to be hit with a hammer, and every time you tap it, it pushes the bit towards the screw, does 1/4 turn then resets. A friend gave me mine, not sure how much they cost, but it works every time for me.

  • @1Scimetar
    @1Scimetar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    The "nuclear option" doesn't need to destroy the screw post. If you use a counter-clockwise bit, it like the flathead driver, but the two sides of the blade are 90 degrees from each other and, once the bit bites into the screw head, it should pop out just as if it were a new screw on a standard philips head bit. This is the solution that my dad came up with, and he worked in construction for a little more than 30 years.

      The key is to start slow, otherwise you just drill out like normal. But if you start slow, the bit will start to dig in, but bind up and start to turn the screw's shaft. The set I tried this was purchased at Harvor Freight and Tool for I think $15 and had 9 bits, ranging in size from I think 1/16in to 3/8in.

    Captain Xavier. You just saved my new stratohawk from becoming shell work. I had striped a screw last night and had to destroy the screw hole then once i had the screw out i put the same striped screw into the hole at the bottom.
    i was so frustrated and i almost broke more of my gun. Thankfully I decided to take a break from the day. this is hours after trying desperately to “button it back up”
    Today i was really worried about it and I decided to look at videos on how to unscrew striped screws.
    I had been watching your channel for a while and i i was surprised to see your video on the results.
    Thank you so much for making this video!!! So very helpful.

      @@CaptainXavier I need so much help rn. I bought a mod kit off of etsy for my knockout, and I stripped three screws. I tried the rubberband, cuz it was the only thing I had at my house. Doesn't work for me and I'm using a number 0 Phillips head and I've gotten nowhere. I tried to put a lot of pressure to break the initial seal, and I got a few out with minimal stripping... Help. Please.
      Edit: after seeking consultation on reddit, many people have asked if I broke the seal on the stripped screws, no I have not. I hope my knockouts not toast, cuz it served me very well. I also tried my dad's number one screwdriver and it's too big to fit in the small holes of the knockout.

      @CaptainXavier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martyman2193 not sure what more advice I can give that I didn't already cover in this video. It sounds like your screw driver was slightly too small. It can be tough finding one that is the right size.
      My next step would be trying a star head screw driver. You will need one just a little smaller than the stripper out section of the screws. The 6 points on the star can sometimes get enough purchase if you push hard enough to get the screws out.

    I've found that the #0 works in every blaster that I've encountered, so I have a bunch of them in my toolbox. I was under the impression that the #1 was too large and would then strip the screws in the first place. The only screw that I'm confident is a #1 is the Stryfe battery door. Thanks for the tip with the T9 though.

    I use a spanner bit that I custom cut from hardened tool steel or a flat head that I filed from tool steel and place them on the screw head and give them a "little" series of love taps with a rubber mallet - basically pressing new indexing features on the screw, then remove them with the same tool I used to force the new surface with. Hasn't failed yet, but it's very much a "Tried everything else, can't drill it out because it's being resold" option.

  • @wadekirby8575
    @wadekirby8575 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have a drill-press or mill put it in neutral, chuck up a screwdriver extension so you have some flat sides to put a wrench on, use the drill-press leaver to apply pressure and the wrench to turn the screwdriver bit. You either need a helper to hold the blaster or some clamps. (If the blaster is twisting out of the clamps put a clamp in the way for the blaster to but into and keep it from twisting out of the other clamps.)
    You can also get left-handed end mills, they don't try to walk like a drill bit can.

  • @zeroblade6599
    @zeroblade6599 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's a drill bit sort of thing specifically for removing stripped out screws. It's just a bit large for nerf screws and doesn't fit most screw holes on nerf blasters. But it might be just right for a fairly large screw close to the surface. Then again, the other methods would probably work on that too, it's more a woodworking tool

    Very helpful video on an often overlooked subject, I ALWAYS use thumb-tightening screws on my battery doors, because of constantly changing LiPo's or other batteries can kill a screw head reeeeeally quickly.
    (As an aside, it looks like you have the same camera tripod as me !?)
    If you're in the U.K. I managed to pick up a set of three PH 00, PH0 and PH1 screwdrivers with long shafts and decent grips from a local pound store (the U.S. equivalent would be a 99 cent store) and they work great, I also got a "modular" (I know you like things modular :) !) precision screwdriver with interchangeable tips from the same store with 6 tips that all slot inside the handle Philips or Posidrive (PH00, PH0, PH1) and 3 slotted tips (0.5mm, 1.5mm, 2mm) and an LED illuminated tip that you switch on/off like using a retractable pencil.
    For what it is, it's pretty bright and can help you see down the screw ports or inside a blaster like a pen-light.
    You're absolutely spot on about loosening and tightening the screws properly by hand, my cordless drill/driver has a torque adjustable chuck, but I still won't use it, I sometimes (if there's a lot of screws to be done) use a cordless driver, but most of the time the shaft on the bits it too short anyway.
    Yeah, and torx or stardrive bits can help remove a shredded screw head, but you just have to throw it away. Luckily I keep any screws I don't need from modding as they are never ther when you need them, and everywhere when you don't!
    Great vid though Chaylo, thanks for the tips!

    I've never come close to success using the rubber method. Pressing down harder with the screwdriver usually works for me. I had a stripped screw in a Longshot stock that got stuck after being partially unscrewed. I managed to slightly pull the shell halves apart (the other screws were out) and get some wire cutters in there to cut the screw in half. A tight grip with some pliers got the rest of the shaft out. Unfortunately, I do have some ugly marks on a couple of blasters from when I went to the drill too soon.

    I had to remove two stripped screws that were just completely stripped out, and nothing worked at all. Rubber bands, super glue, and flat headed screw drivers all failed to get those screws out. My drill also wasn't powerful enough to drill through the heads. So I ended up using my rotary tool to grind out the area around the screwpost on the shell, then I glued the hole closed again. The thing was eventually painted so it's not bad at all. Just another option if all else fails, but please don't do this one first lol

I have a stampede with a badly stripped screw and I got a dremil, and I have access to a 3d printer, and I have wanted to mod the crap out of it for SO LONG! also, I got I rapidstrike, but i couldn't open it because the front sight screw is really stripped, but I did do a mod to make the stock actually adjustable (4 settings), which I can tell you about if you're interested.

      +Jason isbored I am!

    • @jasonisbored6679
      @jasonisbored6679 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, how the stock locks is that it has a little tab that pushes in when you pull on the button to adjust the stock. you can slide the entire mechanism and stock out of the rapidstrike easily, and then you just make more holes in the white plastic piece that the tab sticks into (a long flat rectangle). Make sure they are wide enough, but also, if they are not long enough, the shape of the tab will allow it to slip back out. For mine, I reinforced the area around the new holes (I made 2 more specified for me) with epoxy putty, and spent quite a while sanding and filing to get the piece with the holes to fit back in its spot and to make the hole fit again, so I recommend using different methods to brace it if you find it necessary. I just didn't want to risk breaking it because it is the sort of soft white plastic. I discovered this because, like my first comment said, the front sight screw was (is right now still, but not for long) stripped out, so I could only access the back, and barely; the ease of pulling the entire mechanism out was a life-saver.
      P.S.
      Sorry for rambling, hope this makes sense for someone who has never done this mod. if it doesn't make sense, I will try and clarify, just ask.

    Hey X, thanks for this guide! I know it's a year late but a couple more suggestions to avoid stripping screws or posts:
    1: When inserting screws, turn them backwards until they 'click' into the old threading, this will help avoid crossthreading or cutting multiple threads
    2: Throw away *ALL* your philips screwdrivers. Philips is a *GARBAGE* standard with triangular teeth that are *designed* to cam out to prevent over-torquing. It's only one step up from single-use torque-to-yield screws. JIS screwdrivers are orthognally toothed +headed screwdrivers that are compatible with philips screws and are designed to grip the screw instead of sliding off. Bonus is that then you have screwdrivers that will work on japanese screws whereas philips drivers will actively destroy them.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bit just slightly smaller than the screw hole. The goal is the drill off the entire screw head or to strip the post so completely that the shell can just be pulled apart.

    • @CaptainXavier

      I had never even heard of them until I posted this and the comments came flowing. I suspect most early Nerf modders will not have one. I do plan to look into it and add it to the advanced tool video eventually.

    Does anyone know where I can get a replacement screw for the battery cover for the modulus ECS-10? I have stripped the screw that holds the cover to the blaster body, without this screw the cover will not stay on the blaster body, please help.

    Hopefully something here works, I have an old raider cs-35 and one of the screw whole had a lot of gunk, after cleaning said gunk it was stripped, either I tried when I was younger, or the screw busted apart from corrosion

    Doh! I nuked 3 screw posts on a longshot just last week.
    I made the mistake of starting out with the electric screwdriver. After that, the reverse threaded screw puller bit wouldn't catch so I just drilled the heads off.

    Welp, this would have been helpful to know 24 hours ago. I simply removed all other screws and pried it open so that the screw post broke. Hopefully I'll be able to glue it somehow. If not, I'll just have to live with a wobly and creaking Rapidstrike stock

    Have you ever tried screw extractors....you basically drill a hole in the head of the screw and insert a left hand screw extractor and torc the screw out...simple easy.

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James White I have not. Is that something the average nerf has in their tool kit? I did not even k ow they existed until 4 or 5 people before you suggested them. I have been avoiding tips that require specialty tools. I will probably do a tools addendum at some point covering specialty tools and this is on the list. :)

    • @JamesWhite-hg8yg
      @JamesWhite-hg8yg 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea the average nerfer might know about them....However they work great. Might be cool to show how the work so maybe the average modder might pick them up...especially if you buy used guns at good will...I keep finding ones that the screws are horribly malformed.

    I guess this rayven is trash now since the screw is stripped when i bought it and i tried drilling, its now at a point where if i drill more i risk breaking the blaster itself and it still wont come out

    • @CaptainXavier
      @CaptainXavier  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep drilling. The goal is to drill the screw head off entirely. The screw hole will be useless after that but the blaster will open.
