  • cinecom.info/Sekonic - Sekonic send me their L-858D-U Speedmaster Light Meter to test out. Since I have little experience, Matthew from Cinematography Database gave me great tips on how to use the light meter and how it could improve my work.
In this tutorial video we'll introduce you to the functionality of the light meter and use it on a test.

Yes, having a sekonic L-358 and L-478 has taught me heaps how to really use my camera in manual mode.

Good to pay attention to light metering, Jordy.
The white bulb on the sekonic is actually measuring the light. When measuring light falling onto a flat object (like a painting), it should be as you have done your measurements in the video. However, when measuring the ambient light falling on non flat objects (people, the room itself) this white bulb should be out alle the way. Turn the ring to the right and it will slowly pop out. For film/video, 99% of the measurements done, this bulb should be set in this position.
Although I'm used to working with lightmeters, I use them only in exceptional cases. Normally I fully rely on the waveform monitor (viewing in luma only). Which, as you probably know, is now a standard feature on the GH5!

We have shot one scene, on 35 mm film, in two different schedules (almost after a month), with the same continuity and ambiance, once with day light and once with lights (during night).. flawlessly, just on the strength of the light meter and its reading logs.

For a face you want the dome extended rather than retracted. I also started out using film and my first semester at film school we were required to buy a Sekonic l398 analog light meter. Rather than a retractable dome, it has 3 attachments. 1 is a dome for faces. 1 is flat for single sources and objects, and the 3rd is for reflected light. The great thing about having a light meter is that you can find out in advance what the dynamic range is and if you’re working with lights other than the sun, you can adjust that to taste while making sure everything will be within the range of the film/camera.

Hi thank you for your videos! Is the spot meter reliable? I've heard of big differences between spot and incident.

Interesting video. A question. If I have so many actors on the scene, how do I measure exposure? That is, where do I put the light meter?

Hi sir, thank you for such an informative video. I am wondering if I am shooting in a log picture profile ( for example v-log on the Gh5), and if the light meter reads f4, and I want to achieve a "natural" exposure, do I set my aperture at f2.8? ( since I normally expose v-log one stop above ). Also, in what circumstances, will you use a spot meter? Sorry if these are noob questions

Great info Jordy, wish I could have won that Sekonic:-( I just wanted to point out though you had the dome closed, which is great for checking exposure on flat surfaces but not so good for surfaces like faces. I'm sure it was because you weren't actually taking a reading though.

Thanks! I thought it would capture the actual light source better that way. Isn't the 'sphere mode' more for getting a general idea on 3D objects? Like if you would do one measurement, instead of comparing different light sources?

Typically the dome out would represent taking a light reading that does not have a flat surface like a face, where the dome in would be used to get readings on like a green screen or a piece of paper. I use the L-478DR that would be a lower cost option for your viewers. I purchased the spot attachment, which isn't as good as the L-858 but does the job. I also have the L-398 which is another lower cost option which is the way I started when I first started reading light levels.

Can you calibrate the L-478D-U for a specific cinema camera and save it in the same way as you calibrate for still cameras.

Suppose you are shooting in a Theatre space with existing Tungsten lighting plot... recording video close-up with an additional 3 point LED setup... my thinking is that a LOT of setup can be made BEFORE the talent arrives so the actual shooting can accommodate the performances and compositional takes...
