The first meter of its kind capable of measuring flash, while also being able to achieve an accurate ambient exposure reading in dimly lit scenes as low as 0.1 lux. Plus, swappable modules allow for PocketWizard, Elinchrom and Phottix compatibility. The Sekonic L-858D provides image-makers of all levels with the critical exposure data they need to create stunning and beautiful imagery.
    _____
The Sekonic L-858D is a revolutionary light meter.
The first to Meter Flash Duration.
The first to allow for wireless triggering of Elinchrom Skyport, Phottix Strato and PocketWizard.
    Built in Spot Meter
Increased 3 Stops of Sensitivity for incident light| 2 Stops of Sensitivity for reflected light (spot).
And weather-sealed ports make it the last meter you will ever need to own.
Flash duration has been the secret to how many photographers have frozen the fastest moving subjects.
Breaking the 1/8000th of a second barrier of most cameras.
But also letting you freeze motion at super fast speeds while still only shooting at your camera's max sync speed.
Know when your flash is going to deliver results like these tack sharp splashes,
Or leave these less desirable trails.
You can even see the percentage of ambient light in your exposure to make sure you're getting it’s full stopping power of your strobes.
Also many photographers are now taking advantage of Hyper Sync & Hi Sync.
Hyper & Hi Sync allow you to take advantage of slower flash durations, letting you to use higher shutter speeds, to better freeze motion, especially if you’re in a situation where there is a large amount of ambient light.
Now with flash duration measurement you can unlock the full potential of your strobes.
Wireless control just went to another level.
There are three available radio modules.
One for PocketWizard US Frequencies, One For PocketWizard International Frequencies, and one that combines both Elinchrom and Phottix into a single module.
With the PocketWizard module you can easily trigger any pocketwizard wirelessly, and control the power on any Control TL Compatible Units.
With the Combined Elinchrom & Phottix Module you have full Skyport triggering Skyport power-control capabilities, and Phottix Strato capabilities as well.
With these three options to trigger your lights, wireless triggering just went to another level.
Now with HSS Measurement. Take the guess work out of what your lights are metering when using high speed sync.
When using flash. The shutter speed range goes past the 1/1000 of a second of most meters, to record breaking 1/16000 of a second. Making it increasingly future Proof.
You can even program the number of Pre Flashes used to cancel them out of the main exposure.
The 2.7” Color Dot Matrix Touch Screen allows you to easily change settings.
With the increased sensitivity of the built in 1 degree spot meter. Landscape photographers and still life photographers will rejoice.
Now with Cameras that virtually see in the dark, your meter should too.
The L-858D has an increased sensitivity.
No matter how dim your lights, this meter will measure Illuminance down to 0.1 lx.
Your subject could be several feet away from a candle-lit scene, and you could still meter it.
You will no longer be left in the dark no matter how dim your scene is.
With the 858 you can stay up to date with the included Data Transfer Software, that allows you to....
    Update the firmware when needed.
Profile your meter, and store up to 10 custom exposure profiles for different cameras, using Sekonic, X-Rite or Datacolor Targets.
Keeping your meter up to date, calibrated and profiled has never been easier.
    CINE FUNCTIONS
And if you're a photographer transitioning or shooting film.
The Sekonic 858 is a fully functioning Cine Meter. Simply choose from HD for DSLRs, or CINE for Motion Picture Cameras.
The available ISO's have been expanded to include the native ISO's of some of today’s most popular cameras as well.
The Sekonic 858 simply allows you to light better.
Create lighting recipes that you can repeat over and over again.
Understand what your light is doing beyond what your LCD can tell you.
And better understand the characteristics of your lights that are not seen by the human eye.
Break away towards the next generation of light measurement control with the Sekonic SpeedMaster L-858D Meter

    Knowing your actual shutter speed.
The new Sekonic L-858D SpeedMaster light meter can be used to determine actual shutter speeds for large and medium format leaf shutters. Measurement is easy and quick using the meter’s “Flash Duration Analysis Mode”.
To make a measurement for one shutter speed, e.g., 1/500,
    1. Set the camera and lens in a low ambient light area
    2. Shine a bright light, e.g. an LED flashlight or desk lamp into the lens
    3. Set the shutter speed to the value to be tested and the aperture wide open
    4. Remove the ground glass back and hold the meter with the retracted lumisphere pointing toward the rear of the lens.
    5. Set the meter to flash duration mode and a shutter speed greater than the speed to test.
    6. Press the meter measure button then trip the cocked shutter. The meter display will show the speed in ms and 1/measured value. The shutter opening and closing will simulate a flash duration.
    7. Repeating the test will indicate the variability of the shutter at one speed. Repeating the test over time will indicate a need for CLA. Since the meter will measure 2-40ms when used as described here, shutter speeds of 1/500-1/60 seconds may be measured. One could extrapolate to predict the slower speeds.

I've heard that it doesn't allow you to use the previous radio transmitter units that we use in 758DR (which I and many others own). Normally, I switch between Pocketwizard and Radiopopper depending on what system I use. Do I have to purchase two different radio transmitters now? Not practical at all : (

Many photography fields are going into the history books.
ATG trains & teaches photographers to shoot & look at the image and histogram.
You are no longer shooting film, but with digital, many are not really photographer.
    They are really photo editors.

Hey Joe, we looked the prose and cons of going with a touch screen, and found that it enabled us to give user more options and increased functionality, while also making it easier to keep up with the times with firmware upgrades. Such as power control for Radio compatible units and being able to preview multiple groups at one time, customizing the functions at the bottom of the screen, and much more. But we do hear you, and if there are any functions that we can explain to you please let us know. We are grateful that you love the 700 series.

Great video! I just purchase my very first Light meter the L 858 with Godox and love it, but when I try and create a profile with the DTS Software and Color Checker with 3 exposures like instructed and all settings the same, Incident and reflective, one at 3 stops under, one at 3 stops over ,and one regular exposure with the 4 little squares all matched up with the corners of the Color Checker, I get this message! Alert Message The set level does not exist in the image change the level to one that exists in the image in order to calculate I also noticed it does not offer Flash mode when trying to setup profile! I am really stumped and could really use some help! Thanks...

    • @SekonicGlobal
      @SekonicGlobal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The best way to shoot your test images for profile creation is to shoot indoors with artificial light. The most important thing is to make sure that the target is evenly lit; an umbrella or softbox is helpful. Adjust the lights so that your “normal” exposure data will have full f/stop values like f/8, 1/60. Do not use values like f/8.2, or f/8.6. From a full stop, it is very simple to go +3 stops to f/22, and down to f/2.8 or up to 1/500, and down to 1/8. Enter your actual reflected readings on the reflected side. The profile that you create will be good for both ambient and flash photography. Use only small JPEGs, no raw files or conversions. The meter has to be set for 1/10 stop increments (full stops). Once the profile is made and in use, you may use full, half or third stop settings. The profile only determines two things. One is if there is any difference in the meter's reading and what is considered a "correct" exposure for a particular camera. The other is how much over/under exposure the camera can tolerate. This is usually 5 to 6 stops overall, even though manufacturers will claim a wider range. Those numbers are driven more by marketing people than photographers.
If you are using the Color Checker Passport, make sure the gray patches are on the bottom.
