The insane thing about this is that in 1998ish when I was trying to figure this out, we were going thru all these different versions of the movie and had one with extras playing. I happened to turn on Hendrix's Band of Gypsies and each time the scarecrow fell along the fence (they bent like a boxing ring), Hendrix bent his string on a note that exact amount of times and simultaneously perfectly in sync.

"The Great Gig in the Sky" is by far the most compelling evidence for the synchronicity phenomenon. I highly doubt that Pink Floyd could have done this intentionally with the technology available at the time. And consider this: What's more impressive, the fact that Pink Floyd could have somehow crafted this album in time with the movie or the fact that even in scenes that have little-to-no orchestration, "The Wizard of Oz" was filmed and edited with a rhythm and tempo that could make this phenomenon possible? We always ask the former question when the latter is even crazier to consider.

The original story was supposed to be an analogy over the issue of money towards the end of the 19th century. Farmers on the Great Plains wanted "soft" money, they had great politicians with great speaking skills - the most famous of which was William Jennings Bryant, who's greatest speech was the "Cross of Gold" speech; Bryant was the Democratic candidate for President 2 or 3 times (losing each time). Conservative Republicans wanted "hard" money, i.e. based upon gold and silver.
So the analogy in the story is the great orators of the Great Plains were "tornados", that lead to a distorted economic reality (Oz) (note Oz is the abreviation for ounce, which Gold is often measured in). The way out of that distortion was hard money, gold, i.e. follow the yellow brick road.
Now, the problem with hard money is its based on a relatively fixed supply (the amount of gold in the world circulating at the time), which is deflationary. The Great Depression was a deflationary recession. As the Great Depression illustrated, deflationary recessions are much more painful than inflationary ones.
In reality, the solution to the crisis of money was the creation of a central bank, the Federal Reserve system to manage the money supply. However, the FED's response to the Great Depression was to make the money "harder" which means, they shrunk the money supply instead of expanding it, making the Depression worse, harsher and more long lasting than necessary. Japan and Germany were the 1st countries out of the GD (1932, 1934) respectively because of "loose" money and deficit govt spending on munitions. World War II was directly caused by the Great Depression. The Fed learned its lesson, and is careful about managing money supply during recessions.
One final irony is that this movie came out in 1939 - at the end of the Great Depression and right when WWII was starting.
      Art immitates life.

I did like your version with "Learning To Fly", "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb". They went well with the movie. I would have started "Welcome To The Machine" when they get to the castle and I'm not sure about the rest.

It’s amazing how the movie reaches the point where the tin man is gesturing to his chest and commenting that he has no heart just as the album is ending on the heartbeat. What’s even more amazing is if you begin playback of the album as the lion roars the third time and jumps from the rock, as others here have mentioned, the album ends on the heartbeat just as the Wizard is pulling the heart out of the bag to give to the tin man. Both versions are remarkable, but when the lion roars the third time is better. When the airport explosion occurs in the album, Glinda’s magic breaking the wicked witch’s spell is cast and it begins to snow on them while they’re sleeping in the field. The album offers the perfect soundtrack this way. Right as “Money” begins, the screen explodes in green in the emerald city. It’s crazy. You don’t even need drugs to experience this. I’ve never found anything else like it ever. How did Pink Floyd do it?!

Who’s here because Tony mentioned it on JRE and it was on a Tik Tok?

Seeing as how this has been an urban legend since the movie was first released, I’m surprised this doesn’t have way more views.

It couldn't have been a legend since the movie came out, as it predates DSOTM by almost 40 years

I'm also surprised that Pink Floyd didn't get more love from the allied soldiers in World War II. I guess we'll never know why.

The transition from sepia black and white to full Cinemascope color is truly the "Money" shot....
......and, blew many a mind back in 1939.

The way they did that was to shoot the entire scene in color, but the set of the first part was done up in all black & white. So, it wasn't black & white film transitioning to color film. Everything was painted - and all the fabrics, etc - were black & white and gray and sepia.

That was the greatest special effects moment in movie history (in 1938 color was a special effect). Imagine having never seen a color movie then you see this. Also the color cameras they used were as big as a small car.

I would have loved to experience the original movie release at the Lucas theater, Savannah 1939

This is stupid, you put this album over anything on tv and it’ll match up. Just a bunch of hippies super high thinking it matches up back in the day
