DG still playing wots the deal live and y not. Hey dapto. I'm from dapto too. Got this album in 72. Have many Floyd's, but spin this one more than any of the others barr green is the colour from more. I'd suggest it's about my youth and memories other than that maybe I'm not such a good listener anymore. It holds a special place in my heart.

Sweet. In the last month of my dad's life we listened to a lot of music together. Sometimes his, a Beethoven piano concerto for example, sometimes mine. One night I put Dark Side of the Moon on. He smiled and said "I like this." But the really important thing was that he had a brain tumor and he had already been having trouble communicating. It was easy to guess that he was just totally out of it. As we listened to DSOTM we were holding hands... when the voice comes on saying "I ain't afraid to die; I can go anytime" (paraphrase) my dad squeezed my hand. Me and my mom/sisters knew he was going to die already, but me knowing that he understood this meant so much.

@@musiclover4Ever2024 You're absolutely right. I'm 58 years of age now and have tremendously enjoyed Pink Floyd throughout my life ever since I was about eight years old. Have everything they ever did all on Harvest. Still listen to tonnes of music, classical and otherwise. I was very fortunate to live in the UK for 22 years and saw a multitude of bands live (perhaps over 1000) over a ten-year period largely thanks to the wonderful D-J John Peel on Radio one in the early eighties. Yes, saw PF at Earls Court in 1980. Also, the Berlin performance of the Wall. Just marvelous. All their famous works very good, but right now I'm tremendously enjoying More and Obscured by Clouds. Both are also very interesting films I haven't seen in donkey's years. Have to look them up at some point.

Pink Floyd (from begining of 66/67 to mid 80's) and Hawkwind (from 1970 to mid 80's especially) have both writeen and played the most powerful music and lyrics of all. Music and lyrics that is life changing, inspirational, educational (warnings of corporate dystopia) and hope giving in the form of a real counter cultural message. If all teenagers listened to the music and lyrics of both bands work from the above years especially, it'll help build healthy adults witha wholesome outlook on life.

Of course they have still managed to come up with some great tunes but really? the Floyd at their best went from '69-'75. That's about it. Move on; everything else is negativity and craziness. That traditional song starting at 38:06 (during Absolutely Curtains) is a Mapuga dirge (sad song) commonly sung at funerals.
I was an anthropologist, studying Mapuga (and other) tribal languages, customs, and culture in West Papua in the late 1970s.
Roughly translated, the words are a haunting refrain of “Oh my father, my father, where will I go now? Oh my brother, my brother, where will I live now?” The chanting continues in that spirit.
The men and women dance slowly and separately. The men and women typical cover themselves in mud and red clay. No feathers etc. as this is a mourning and not a celebration.
The corpse is raised in a tree platform about ten feet off the ground. The men and women mourn dance in circles below the body.
If the chief or head man has died suddenly, often the men carry spears or axes, in readiness for war. Often the women attach many leaves and branches of trees to themselves and slowly sway them.
It’s quite a memorable event for an outsider to behold.

If you listen to pre Dark Side Of The Moon, this is definitely Floyd through and through. I also suggest listening to the only two Barrett solo albums he wrote after getting booted from Floyd. Very much like early Floyd, understandably. (Those two Barrett albums were helped along by David Gilmore and Roger Waters and also produced by those two guys.) Check out PInk Floyd "Atom Heart Mother" and compare the similarities to this excellent album.

I was 15 yo when I bought "Obscured by clouds" in 1972-73. It was the soundtrack of Barbet Schroeder's film "La Vallée" with his very pretty wife Bulle Ogier.
Incidentally, this movie gave me the New-Guinea fauna virus, for the rest of my life. At 18, I made my first solo trip to PNG. Back then, Port Moresby was already a cut-throat. I then visited Lae and Bulolo but I missed Popondetta. Most of the time you had to fly Air Newguini. The road to Mount Hagen being just opened, I travelled to the Highlands by truck. Then Madang, Wewak and Vanimo.
After my PhD, I made more trips to New Guinea, and ended up working in rural development for the next 25 years in the western Indonesian part (Irian Jaya).
"Obscured by clouds" is actually the feeling you have in the pristine primary forest when you wake up and see networks of valleys downhill covered with white mist under blankets of dark clouds announcing the next rain.
    A wonderful soundtrack anyway.
Popol Vuh also composed the music of "Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes", one of Werner Herzog's masterpieces. A must-see, with a magnificent Klaus Kinski.
As to Klaus Schulze, he made "Body Love" (Blanche), a very nice record for a trivial porn movie. May our dear KS rest in peace. Amen.

Only the Floyd could casually put out this album and then ignore it. Opening track alone would be a major achievement for typical prog rock bands. The more I think about the back catalogue of Floyd, the more I feel I was so lucky to belong to that age group when the band was active in the studio and on stage.

The 1st two tracts of Obscured by Clouds and 2nd When You're In were meant to be played together in duo channel mode on song in left and other in the right speakers at the same time for the truly transcendental effect to occur. I watched the smile drop from his face in seconds. I started digging until I had assembled enough equipment to play an actual record. The 5 minute miracle I call it. Pulled this out and within minutes my friend was weeping with joy. Complete 180 degree about face. He had no exposure to anything like the ethereal melodies contained herein. "Obscured by Clouds" by Pink Floyd is a captivating journey through sound and emotion. Released as the soundtrack album for the French film "La Vallée" in 1972, it showcases the band's remarkable ability to craft immersive sonic landscapes that transport listeners to distant realms.
With its dreamlike melodies, ethereal instrumentals, and introspective lyrics, the album takes listeners on a mesmerizing exploration of the human experience. From the hauntingly beautiful "Burning Bridges" to the mesmerizing title track "Obscured by Clouds," each song invites listeners to delve deeper into the complexities of existence.
One of the remarkable aspects of "Obscured by Clouds" is its seamless blend of rock, folk, and psychedelic elements, a signature style that Pink Floyd has perfected over the years. The album serves as a testament to the band's innovation and creativity, cementing their legacy as pioneers of progressive rock.
Overall, "Obscured by Clouds" is a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences with its transcendent melodies and profound lyrical themes. It stands as a testament to Pink Floyd's enduring influence on the world of music and remains a cherished gem in the band's illustrious discography.

    Childhood's End
    21:45
    You shout in your sleep
Perhaps the price is just too steep
    Is your conscious at rest
If once put to the test
    You awake with a start
To just the beating of your heart
Just one man beneath the sky
Just two ears just two eyes
You set sail across the sea
Of long past thoughts and memories
    Childhood's end your fantasies
    Merge with harsh realities
And then as the sail is hoist
You find your eyes are growing moist
And all the fears never voiced
Say you have to make the final choice
Who are you and who am I
To say we know the reason why
Some are born some men die
    Beneath one infinite sky
There'll be war there'll be peace
But everything one day will cease
All the iron turn to rust
All the proud men turn to dust
So all things time will mend
And so this song will end

    Bridges burning gladly,

    Cast aside the other way.
    Magic visions stirring,
Kindled by and burning flames rise in her eyes.
    The door stands ajar,
The wall that once were high.
    Beyond the gilded cage,
    Beyond the reach of ties.
    The moment is at hand.
    She breaks the golden band.
    The Gold It’s in the…:
    Come on, my friends,
    Let's make for the hills.
They say there's gold but I'm looking for thrills.
You can get your hands on whatever we find,
Because I'm only coming along for the ride.
    Well, you go your way,
    I'll go mine.
I don't care if we get there on time.
Everybody's searching for something, they say.
I'll get my kicks on the way.
    Over the mountains, across seas,
Who knows what will be waiting for me?
I could sail forever to strange sounding names.
Faces of people and places don't change.
All I have to do is just close my eyes
To see the seagulls wheeling in those far distant skies.
All I want to tell you,
All I want to say is count me in on the journey.
    Don't expect me to stay.
    Wot’s… Uh the Deal:
    Heaven sent the promised land
Looks alright from where I stand
'Cause I'm the man on the outside looking in
    Waiting on the first step
Show me where the key is kept
Point me down the right line because it's time
To let me in from the cold
    Turn my lead into gold
'Cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
And I think I'm growing old
Flash the readies wot's... uh the deal
Got to make it to the next meal
Try to keep up with the turning of the wheel.
    Mile after mile
    Stone after stone
You turn to speak but you're alone
A million miles from home you're on your own
So let me in from the cold
    Turn my lead into gold
'Cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
And I think I'm growing old
    Fire bright by candlelight
    With her by my side
And if she prefers we will never stir again
    Someone sent the promised land
And I grabbed it with both hands
Now I'm the man on the inside looking out
Hear me shout 'Come on in. What's the news and where you been?’
Cause there's no wind left in my soul
    And I've grown old
    Mudmen:
    (Instrumental)
    Childhood’s End:
    You shout in your sleep
Perhaps the price is just too steep
Is your conscience at rest if once put to the test?
You awake with a start to just the beating of your heart
Just one man beneath the sky
Just two ears, just two eyes
You set sail across the sea of long past thoughts and memories
    Childhood's end
Your fantasies merge with harsh realities
And then as the sail is hoist
You find your eyes are growing moist
All the fears never voiced say you have to make your final choice
Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why?
    Some are born
Some men die beneath one infinite sky
There'll be war, there'll be peace
But everything one day will cease
All the iron turned to rust
All the proud men turned to dust
And so all things, time will mend
    So this song will end
    Free Four:
    One, two, free, four!
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in the gloom of the sickroom
And talk to yourself as you die.
Life is a short warm moment
And death is a long cold rest.
You get your chance to try
In the twinkling of an eye
Eighty years, with luck, or even less.
So all aboard for the American tour,
And maybe you'll make it to the top.
    But mind how you go.
I can tell you, 'cause I know.
You may find it hard to get off.
You are the angel of death
And I am the dead man's son.
He was buried like a mole in a fox hole.
And everyone is still on the run.
And who is the master of fox hounds?
And who says the hunt has begun?
And who calls the tune in the courtroom?
And who beats the funeral drum?
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in the gloom of the sickroom
And talk to yourself as you die.
    Stay:
    Stay
And help me to end the day.
    And if you don't mind
We'll break a bottle of wine.
    Stick around
And maybe we'll put one down,
    'Cause I wanna find
    What lies behind those eyes.
    Midnight blue
    Burning gold
    A yellow moon
    Is growing cold
    I rise
    Looking through my morning eyes,
    Surprised
To find you by my side.
    Rack my brain
To try to remember your name
    To find
The words to tell you goodbye.
    Morning dues
    Newborn day
    Midnight blue
    Turn to gray
    Midnight blue
    Burning gold
    A yellow moon
    Is growing cold
    Absolutely Curtains:
    (Instrumental with wordless vocals)

this album is something for many people. for me, it is being 16 years old, walking to school, my friends houses and work with headphones on playing a steady rotation of this album, atom heart mother, dtotm and 2112 by rush. all on cassette. amazing walks. i had grown up with a lack of foundation and a love of music. discovering pink floyd and rush at 15 was transforming to me. it showed me that music can take us away, it can inspire us, it can impress us. it can cause us to critique that which we can not come close to making and there was a lot of pain in some of it. today, i play guitar, good enough to probably bang this song out in some form. i never really saw that coming, as i never aspired to be like the musicians, except neil peart.
