I think the most bizarre thing about the reporter's question is that is was posed in German (by, as far as I can tell, a German reporter). My guess is that if an English reporter had asked Klopp in English, he would have felt obliged to reply in English. But with the reporter conveniently asking in German, it would have felt somewhat silly for Klopp to reply in English.

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Jürgen Klopp, the German football manager who was the manager of Liverpool FC at that time, was known for his proficiency in speaking English, as he had been managing English clubs for several years. Klopp had a distinctive and often humorous way of speaking English in his interviews and press conferences, which endeared him to fans and the media alike.
However, people's language preferences and abilities can change over time, and I do not have access to events or developments beyond September 2021. If there have been any recent changes or updates regarding Jürgen Klopp's language preferences, you may want to refer to more current sources for the latest information.
