My Matches at the VHG Open Longsword Tournament

  • The HEMA tournament at the Victoria Highland Games was quite an event, with lots of participants from different schools in Canada and the US (and even one fighter from Mexico). It was stressful and exhausting but also fun, and the outstanding display of sportsmanship was amazing to see. Also plenty of skillful fights to watch and enjoy.
    I got tons of footage from the event (not all of it decent quality), and it's going to take a lot of time to edit all of it. Cursed background noise...
    Anyway, I hope you enjoy the footage with slow-motion replay and my commentary.

    I forgot to add the score for the last match: Chad won 9 to 6. I'm pretty happy with how close that was.
    And by the way, regarding the few apparently inevitable sexist comments about female competitors... Jane Johnston beat Reese Pollock for Silver. Just so you know.
    Strength matters, but skill is the biggest factor in armed martial arts, and there are plenty of competent female fighters in HEMA.

    • @chadherbert18
      @chadherbert18 6 ปีที่แล้ว +218

      Super close match! Had me sweat'n when Jane called: "LAST EXCHANGE!" Not trying to assume gender by names, but I check the list and I think 6-8 of 36 fighters were swords-women! 1 in 6 ratio - better than the 1-15 ratio in the technology field I work in - lol...

      I can attest to the competent female fencers, have a number of them with my club....one of them is terrifying to fight at first since you don't expect it from someone as "bubbly" as she is, that and her small frame doesn't help the image

      Very nice fighting. Now you said you have a tendency to be defensive when you fight. You should work on that. I've done modern/sport fencing and there are a lot of great epeeist and foilist who is predominantly defensive. They can read or set up an opponent to attack them in a certain way in order to parry or counter cut. This rule seems to favor the defender more with after blows and doubles.

      Skallagrim hey Skall one question
      Is it allowed to make moves/swings with one arm or do you have to hold the sword always with two hands?

    • @Jesses001
      @Jesses001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      That last fight was indeed close. Good fight.
      As for females vs males, males clearly have an advantage in combat sports over females being generally stronger and having higher testosterone, allowing for better combative aggression. Also males seem to have a level of instinctual body mechanics females do not. That all being said, a female can overcome these disadvantages with training. Strength is an advantage, but skill is even more important in such matches.

    Great footage!! Even better match! You pointed out my flat hits - I had a ton of them - like 8-10 belly hits on the day, including 1 on Josh and 2 on Reese in the bronze metal match! I was super rusty changing grips with only ten minutes of Longsword practice in the last 5 months. I basically held a thumb grip the entire day - lol. Can’t wait for another battle - take care!! :)

    With all the information you gave. The biggest appreciation is to willingly point out your own flaws to not only not seem invincible because that’s just impossible, but to show an example of realistic errors and things to be aware of. I myself do MMA and people make mistakes, it takes one tiny error to recognize that and take advantage of a moment be it a defensive mistake or an offensive one. You could have had zero points and that’s more important to see your issues then doing what I’ve seen others do and just only show their “invincible” mentality of their successes and no failures. So thank you.

    This really drives home for me how serious sword fights were. You enter a duel with someone and seconds later someone is dead or grievously injured. It's ruining movies for me, however. Now every time I see a battle scene where two massive armies charge at each other and then immediately pair off into 1on1 duels I roll my eyes. It would be nice to see a movie about medieval or ancient warfare with full dedication to historical accuracy in terms of tactics and weapons/armor used. No one can say there isn't a way to make 2 phalanxes squaring off cinematically exciting, because I can imagine the scene now, shot for shot.

    • @Masa6x
      @Masa6x 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I fully agree, altho I would prefer to see phalanx vs cavalry or something, instead of 2 phalanxs, using different formations to counter the enemies. A historical movie would be great, and if you've seen the go pro footage from skall's instructors dueling saber, it looks better than the movies.

I thought you fought well, though I agree that you did look very nervous in the beginning. Always happy to see a fellow warrior who enjoys the techniques and intricacies of battle. Your narration of the different moves and explanation of the rules of the tournament really made this one of your better videos. Entertaining as well as informative and still stated plainly enough for someone new to the channel to understand. Keep up the good, work it shows.

    Your ability to honestly recognize you mistakes and your will to analyze your past matches will allow you to improve much faster than anyone who wouldn’t do the same. Now I haven’t practiced HEMA, I’m a big nerd for Martial Arts and this is like the most interesting thing to me, but I practice Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, and MMA and I used to do TKD. I just think the ability to look back at mistakes in video and analyze what you could do better is such an under appreciated asset and I’d love to see more of this kind of stuff from this channel, maybe I’ll get into HEMA soon.

    Glad to see you are participating in tournament fihgts now. Just remember that competing is a own skill as well and if you feel like that your first tournament didn't go really well, it's probably because you are still very inexperienced tournament fighter. Next time you won't feel anywhere as nervous and through being more relaxed your performance will improve. I'm not a fighter myself, but have some or lot, depends on how you see it, experience of tournaments in teamsports, such as icehockey and floorball.

Considering his massive amount of training and the fact that this is what he studies and does all the time it actually pathetic he even almost lost to a girl. Wtf. Coming from boxing someone can look great on the bag and then completely fail at actual fighting.

      beeing a woman in swordsmanship does not have the same drawbacks as it has in boxin, especially the body strenght is not as required in swordmansship then in boxin, swordmanships rewards swift decision making and good blade control, both things that can be done no matter if there are two balls hanging between your legs or on your chest.

    • @bardbarbarian5313
      @bardbarbarian5313 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      does the weight of a sword matter, short answer no, long answer, in most cases no, since most blades (and especially longsowrds) are balanced out at the hilt of the sword or the grip, it is pretty easy to move them around (which of course does not apply so much to blade heavy swords like machetes or falchions) but as i said in a case of a longsword the weight is negliable and with practice you won't even notice it at a certain point of training as much as you would think).
