I’d appreciate it if you could explain a bit more on the difference between “equirectangular” and “equisolid angle” lenses, which 3D/360 cameras use which type of lenses, and how these lenses affect our video editing workflows. If we know which videos come from which type of lenses, theoretically we can edit any 3D(≈spatial)/VR180(immersive) videos regardless of the hardware from which they came.
Glad you find it helpful! We work in the film industry and commercial VR space - as a working professional, we do have industry knowledge. I am also an Emmy winning filmmaker. Great video. So clear and the example work well with great results. I have often wondered if there is a way to make a 3d video with a 2d camera. I'm wondering if anyone has developed or considering a process that eg. one flies a drone through the same landscape several times and software / ai assembles a 3d video. Something for KartaVR?
Amazing content, thanks for these valuable guide. I switched from Insta360 X4 to Qoocam 3 Ultra, reframing was a bit of a letdown in Qoocam Studio compared to Insta, now in DaVinci there are a lot more possibilities. Will you also be making a guide / workflow on how to shoot/import/edit/export Qoocam 3 Ultra footage for 360 8k 10-bit HDR color graded viewing? TYIA!!
I have one in my original Q3 Ultra review on Premiere. But Resolve is so simple - when you set HDR color space and resolve wide gurm color management - it just convert everything for you to REC 709 or whatever output space you decide. Literally like 3 second tutorial lol. I will make a short soon
Thank you Hugh! I am trying beginning my 360 journey. I don't have a high-end computer anymore and would like to know if I can keep my timeline resolution to 1920X1080 and just render to 7680x3840 when I export and still achieve the best image quality possible?
Yes. If you have studio, you can edit in 1080P timeline and then set the timeline back to 8k when you ready to render and go to sleep. It still work just crazy slow assuming you have Studio version :)
Thanks again for an awesome tutorial. I work with dogs, and I'm trying to figure out the best work flow. Often I film with just one 360 camera, but I would love to have the possibility to edit the photage as a multicam clip. So I can easily switch between the dogs, or me. Also I was wondering if the Karta VR has a autotrack function you can use to reframe?
Thank you! The fusion for speed part finally means i can edit 360 on my laptop. Are there any quality downsides at all to doing it that way? Why not set the project to that resolution in the first place?
Hi, I have tried the faster work flow part in the fusion, it does play back super smooth but I have a problem, I have the clips not making a full globe, edges not meeting, just wondering if you might have had this and if so how did you or have you corrected it. many thanks
Hi really good video, I watched the original about a year ago when I first got my 360. Could you make a video of your a basic workflow, for example , I have mixed footage, some from my phone and some from my 360. how do you do your workflow, do you have a couple time lines in the same project one with the 360 footage and then one with normal footage, then edit them both then combine. Would be really good to see how you combine the two and im sure many other people would also like to see one too thank you
@hughhou I would not invest my whole freetime in 3603D without your great tutorials, you are an inspiration and I would never not credit you if I would be a professional. Thank you so much for your great content over all the years, there wouldn't be such a large community without you. We really rely on your hardware but also software tutorials as even the largest TH-camrs out there doing Resolve fear 360 and especially 3603D, so there is legit no source pushing regular, professionally backed content that also is helpful for people doing it as a hobby.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I am entering now into the video editing world and I learn a lot from your vids! I am using an Intel i7 12700k 3.60 GHz, 32GB RAM DDR5, nVidia RTX4060 and a Corsair MP600 SSD, and it is extremely slow with the 8k workflow you suggested. The performance monitor is not showing any resource at 100% usage, so I do not understand where is the bottle neck. What component do you think should be improved? I do not want to use FullHD resolution workflow, because in a few years from now it will look obsolete and I wish my video to live a little longer than that. Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes, you should try to use full resources. I think the GPU is the bottle neck. I never use 4060 or anything with less than 8G vram. Resolve is a GPU heavy application
Hugh you are the man. Awesome tutorial but I´m struggling with the VR viewer update. When I want to update it it says you have reached the limitation of DR "Buy now". The timeline is also not possible to change to 8k
Great tutorial I wear 2 hats one is 360 video editing the other is hospitality and catering instructional design with a focus on culinary arts. Can you do a tutorial on editing filming and editing cooking demos your contribution would be a great contribution to lecturers and food photographers. 🙏🌟🌟
Hello Hugh, great tip to level 360-video in Qoocam studio. But too bad you cant set keyframes in 360 editing mode. Hopefully Kandao can add this in the future.
Why you need keyframe in 360 mode? Any keyframe you should do it in NLE - as the smoothing is better. Keyframe to only keep the camera straight not keyframe pov (which make people sick in VR). BTW, we are coming to PARIS at Oct!!
@@hughhou Because the horizon isnt always off in the same way. You can straighten the horizon with the grid on moment A and it doesnt have to be straight at moment B. I think keyframes in 360-mode would be very useful. It works the same way with levelling with Davinci resolve fusion.
Thanks for the great content again. I have yet to try it out once I find the time. One thing I did not understand from your video is why you use portrait resolution? Only for social media export? Or is there another purpose?
Yes for social media like TH-cam Shorts, IG and TikTok since this is most people do reframe for - for their social media. For other video, I think 360 video and immersive format is way cooler. But this workflow also work with 16 by 9 up to 4K!
Very good video, one question, after using KartaVR and putting the image as you want, can normal tracking be used without any problem or can it give an error? Thank you very much in advance.
You probably want to "pre-comp" all the KartaVR effects or even render in place everything before use tracking. Then tracking just work like normal video. The idea in VFX is always "render in place" before you do another GPU intensive task - like tracking. As long as you use ProRes as suggested in this video, you can render as many pass as you want to speed up your process (if not, it will be a long wait as your GPU might run out of VRAM for doing so many things at once). I hope this help!
It does not has edge aware so no, not really. But I track it myself and usually get better result as it has full velocity control here for tracking point animation instead of genetic animation. That is why literally all good 360 content is done in After Effects or Resolve.
Great tip! but I have a problem, this morning I wanted to start a new project with rushs of the One R, but the old KVR does not work: black screen. So I followed your tutorial to install the new version... And still not, in edit black screen, but in fusion it works ? how to make it work in edit ?? Thank you for your future answer (version DVR studio 19.1.2 built 3)
@@hughhou Ok, I uninstalled the latest version of DVR and reinstalled the old one, the 19.1.1 and now it works in the edit tab. Phew! Another point, my workflow is mostly multicam, so I can’t use the effects inside. But well, my pc can read barely 4 shots in multicam with kvrviewer in full HD at 25 fps in real time, with a timeline also in 1080p, I’m satisfied...
I really feel you should have linked Andrew Hazelden in the description. Most people will not know how to connect with him. "We are not here for credit" but credit should be given.
Hey Hugh. I think I have a beginner question.... maybe will be helpful to more people. I have KvrViewer on an Adjustment Clip. I have reframed the shot. Now I wish to ad some speed ramps to it, but when I mess with the Retime Frame, it does no affect the adjustment clip as well, so my KVR reframe looses its link with the clip. Any tips? Thanks a lot if you have the time.
It is kinda like in Premiere, I will retime it first - nest or pre-comp (right click and comp the clip with retiming effect in it, or better, render in place as retime effect is very GPU intensive). If it is harder, just use the kvrViewer on the clip directly - adjustment layers is a best practices for long video but does not mean you need to follow it all the time. Both ways work
@@hughhou Really appreciate the fast response! I tried reframing and after making a Compound Clip to add after the Retime. OH of M1 Pro got very slow... I will try to retime first as you suggested... and also add music for only after doing the reframing. I believe is a much better workflow. Thanks a lot!!!
Is there a difference in quality from the insta360 & qoocam software to ProRes ? Should all insta360 x4 user use Qoocam export tool instead ? I've also had multiple clip to export, and it asked me more question in my export than it did for you. Ask me for direction lock, denoise and a few others... Maybe I have a newer version of insta360, or it because I'm on windows, or when you select multiple clips, you get a different option set... I let them all at the default, and let my computer export them and we will see what happen.
Oh no, this is just a good hack. But if you know how to adjust level, you can just go from Insta360 Studio to Resolve as Resolve in kvrViewer or ReframeUltra can also adjust level. I do that for Premiere edit as Premiere latest 2024 having some issue on VR rotate sphere and I need to use Qoocam Studio to save my a$$.
Hi Hugh, I have watched this video about a dozen times on the faster work flow. No matter what I do I end up with holes in the clips in fusion. Im using a insta 360 x3, I have tried changing the resolution and stretch to the edges but no luck, please help me as when I do play it back, even with the holes/ chunks missing from the clips it plays back super smooth as you said it does in the video. Thanks again
Question, with the final slow computer method does this affect final quality output? if youre exporting in 1920x1080 for horizontal isnt this the max people can select on YT?
No it does not. All method here as long as you have Resolve Studio - they are all high quality output - in some sense higher the Insta360 Studio if you throw in some Resolve AI magic
@@hughhou got you but if I want the video on TH-cam to be 4k wouldn’t the rendering in 1920x1080 limit that? That would be when you’re showing the render node bit
@@hughhou don't know if it's just me 4:11 didnt appear here 622 is not clickable (same as other before 4min) ... may be it's not suposed to? but i'll find it.
What software would you recommend for improving 360 images? Neat Photo for denoise and Topaz Photo Ai for upscale? Or something else? And what for editing? Thought about just using Davinci also for photo editing since it brings everything needed for 3603D and others don't... Thanks a lot in advance :) I will buy your recommendation today if you answer. :)
Master Hugh, the imitators will have to study this new tutorial in depth lol!!! Master, don't forget that we have doubts about how to use the FB360 Encoder for Muxing, because the FB360 Encoder does not accept ProRes files. We do not want to use mp4 with H264 or H265 codecs, so all we can do is export ProRes 8K and publish it on TH-cam as you taught us in the previous tutorial. In this case, our step with Reaper and FB is dead! Big hug!❤❤❤
Mmmmm, you don't use FB360 for TH-cam release tho. On Meta is H265 only so FB360 work fine. For TH-cam is only 4-ch you can use Premiere or just mux them together and use the Google Spatial Injection tool. I will figure out a more streamline Resolve workflow now Resolve 19 support ambisonic audio finally!
@@hughhou I miss FB360 running in Reaper in third order! If we use ProRes export in Premiere, we are restricted to 4 ch. And if we use H265 export for FB360 Encoder we have a loss of image quality. Does H265 also have a limit of up to 60Mbps? Maybe this fouxi ambisonic in Resoove is the solution! Thanks master!
I work with 3D and I'm producing 360, ask me a question please, the Quest 2 glasses have a maximum resolution of 1832 x 1920 for each eye, if I'm going to create a 360 stereo top and down I have to generate it with the full resolution of 3840 x 3840 ?
Quest 2 the best resolution will be 5760 x 5760 top and bottom. So Pro 2 with 60fps 5760 x 5760 will get you the best resolution in high refresh rate. I hope it help!
im using a qoocam 3 ultra and find it easier to reframe in the qoocam studio, does it matter if i reframe in qoocam studio, export prores and then put it in davinci resolve to use Noise reduction and mix it with other footage? does that affect quality or is it the same as reframing in davinci?
Great video. Maybe I missed the explaination, can someone be kind enough to tell me the differences of using kvrReframe360Ultra vs kvrViewer tool in the Edit page ? I tried both and it seem they don't produce the exact same results no matter how I tune the parameter. The kvrViewer produce a result with less fisheye distortion (more straight lines like real world) but the edges are stretched... Thanks in advance
That is what I used on a daily basic - but some people argue Topaz AI is better. But let me take more time to do a correct comparison to draw my conclusion.
Thanks! :) Will be very interesting@@hughhou I personally have not achieved good results with Topaz for Denoising yet but I might have did too much...need to play around with it a bit too
I guess there is no way to increase playback speed using retime controls for an adjustment layer? I suppose the best way to deal with this is to add the kvrViewer to the clip itself?
Actually adjustment layer is better than full clip - as you can cut just that adjustment layer and do reframe on the session you need to increase speed. Full clip will affect full clip render. If that make sense. Adjustment workflow is best practices even in Premiere.
When I transfer my clips from the Kandao Ulta 8K to Davinci for the reframe, I see a format with a black background and the two images of each lens separately, how do I fix that?
@@hughhou still hoping to see this soon! Just found your channel and excited to jump in before I consider paying for an upgrade to Studio. Any chance downgrading to V18.6.6 avoids the bug?
hey , as it appears that we are no longer able to instal it in the free version of Davinci( after 19.1 update it is only avalaible for paid version ). do You think it is good idea to export file from insta360 studio already with frame we want with the pro res 422 and then edit it in davinci ? I edit only for myself ( travel and snowboard) and dont really need to pay for davinci but I would like to keep best possible img quality. Can you advice in short steps to keep best quality ? I was thinking to frame and cut clip in the iinsta studio or another option export res 422 use qoocam to level , frame and cut and then use davinci for the rest of my edit ? what do you think about that ? thanks
Yes. That is super annoying Resolve now make everyone paid to use script plugins. The community is angry but we can not do anything as Blackmagic realize most of their users do not pay and want them to pay as technically KartaVP provide feature that is only available in Studio. You can neither just use Insta360 Studio or buy any camera / hardware from Blackmagic and then you get the software for free for life. Or buy a second hand registration card online as people are selling it as they do not need it for cheap. Until Blackmagic fix this - there is not much we can do. It is a shame... The good note is, still way cheaper than Premiere subscription.

Our client including Meta, Google, X and ESPN. So we build solution that is never been done before in VR. I personally do not believe in Hollywood gatekeeping. So we freely share our knowledge to help the industry to grow in the VR space and 360 editing space :) And it warm my heart if my audience can take way knowledge that advance their career, their art style and their creative works. We need more artists / creators in the 360 and VR space.
I’m looking forward to seeing your future videos, especially about the lenses! Good luck with everything!

Yes I have. I will focus on that when I go tho all the latest feature on Resolve :)
Very very very good tutorial. Would you explain how to track e.g. a logo with kvrplane to a moving object in in the 360 video?
Yes great idea. I will include it in upcoming tutorial
Thanks Hugh :) Could you please tell us the professional alternative you will test out next for Topaz?

@@hughhou Thanks a lot!
@@hughhou that would be much appreciated!
Great video!!!!! that australian accent never fooled me! haha
Lol! Glad you like it!!
Would be really good to see how you combine the two and im sure many other people would also like to see one too
thank you
Great idea! I kinda mention how here by setting scaling in Inspector effect pano instead of timeline level. But I will make a dedicated one soon
@@hughhou Thank you for the reply and I look forward to a video when you get time. thanks again
Wow cool video thanks : ) how can I output a reframed 360vr video in full 5.7k for my VR Headset ( HPReverb or Oculus ) ?
That is not reframe - that is standard 360 video editing and I go in depth on this one: th-cam.com/video/V_Q2qfQnf-M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1vdCBkofQ1xIelo3
Thank you Hugh
Thank you so much for the great information...
Glad it was helpful!
Great suggestion. I will certainly considering it and plan it.
@@ChristiaanRoest79 I get what you mean, I put a grid overlay on the timeline so I could straighten the horizon in davinci
Thanks Hugh 👍
My pleasure!
Thank you, Kimchi! :))) And you, Hugh!
"Any time!" Kimchi responded
Can you do tracking on insta 360 footage like the deep tracking option on their app?
It does not has edge aware so no, not really. But I track it myself and usually get better result as it has full velocity control here for tracking point animation instead of genetic animation. That is why literally all good 360 content is done in After Effects or Resolve.
yes please credit the source totally agreed!
Thank you thank you!!

Great tip!
but I have a problem, this morning I wanted to start a new project with rushs of the One R, but the old KVR does not work: black screen. So I followed your tutorial to install the new version... And still not, in edit black screen, but in fusion it works ? how to make it work in edit ?? Thank you for your future answer (version DVR studio 19.1.2 built 3)
Mmmm… let me try it and report back
@@hughhou Ok, I uninstalled the latest version of DVR and reinstalled the old one, the 19.1.1 and now it works in the edit tab. Phew!
Another point, my workflow is mostly multicam, so I can’t use the effects inside. But well, my pc can read barely 4 shots in multicam with kvrviewer in full HD at 25 fps in real time, with a timeline also in 1080p, I’m satisfied...
not to be a stickler but 14:55 to 16:10 sounds wild like rumbling but i took a bunch of notes thank i will let you know if everything works :)

What Do you think about codec av1 in Container webM with Opus Audio?
I am not familiar with webM.
Possible to add motion blur to the reframe movements?
Yes! You can just turn on Motion Blur in Resolve as it’s built in.
@@hughhou where is the motion blur option i couldn't find in the Fusion page?

I am making a tutorial about photo as we speak so I will answer you with an indepth tutorial!
@@hughhouThis is great! 😍
Please also consider 3D here... since all Editors can't display/handle it :/ (thats why o thought about using Resolve instead)
@hughhou Would you still recommend Neat Video to denoise 3603D videos? Or sth. else?
That is what I used on a daily basic - but some people argue Topaz AI is better. But let me take more time to do a correct comparison to draw my conclusion.
Thanks! :) Will be very interesting@@hughhou
I personally have not achieved good results with Topaz for Denoising yet but I might have did too much...need to play around with it a bit too
I guess there is no way to increase playback speed using retime controls for an adjustment layer? I suppose the best way to deal with this is to add the kvrViewer to the clip itself?
Actually adjustment layer is better than full clip - as you can cut just that adjustment layer and do reframe on the session you need to increase speed. Full clip will affect full clip render. If that make sense. Adjustment workflow is best practices even in Premiere.
Thanks again boss, guess retime first and then adjustment layer seems to be the way to go
Hey Hugh, can you please check the link to KartaVR plugin. It shows "page not found" message.
I was just thinking, can you use DaVinci Resolve to edit insta360 videos while doing a voiceover at the same time?
When I transfer my clips from the Kandao Ulta 8K to Davinci for the reframe, I see a format with a black background and the two images of each lens separately, how do I fix that?
You will need to stitch in Qoocam Studio First into 360 video before reframing - same as Insta360
Where is the promised tutorial on loading 8K into free davinci resolve?
Not out yet! Resolve has a bug stopping this to happen in 19 :(
@@hughhou still hoping to see this soon!
@@hughhou Hey ,thanks for answer and all your videos of course !! I found an easy solution for now , installed the old version, 19.03 and now all works great :) just quick question , if I edit little bit( cut and reframe , maybe lazy auto track ) in insta studio and export in res 422 and then make rest in davinci , would I loose quality of the video or it is best to frame everything in davinci ??
