At this point Rome was just too big, too populace and too hard headed to be beaten by carthage. The battle of Cannine was dissastrious for not only Rome but Hannibal too as it drained all of his manpower and recourses, his defeat was inevatable at that point.
I have to commend Hanibal for being able wage on 20 years of geurrila warfare in Italia but his efforts were probably better suited for taking over the Middle-east or something, as that could strengthen carthage enough for a future punic war.

@@namastehindustan9879 I don't want to come off as rude but if you watched the Oversimplified videos you'll notice that going through the Alps may as well be a battle of Cannine for Hannibal.
He lost 75% of his army and only had like ~80 elephants left. Trying to go back *through the Alps* would be just as catastrophic, and that's assuming he can get even get there. By this point most of Roman Italia was completly Romanized with only the northern and southern part feeling resentment against the regime meaning that Hannibal can't recruit that many locals to their side and worse: everybody is an enemy.
Again, his army was completly depleted after Cannine. Getting to the Alps through hostile lands would be a massive challange on its own, and then going through the Alps? It would be impossible, i'd be surprised if Hannibal himself would survive that journey, let alone a not useless army.
Getting to Italia from the alps is like preforming an amphibious invasion and then burning the ships down so that there would be no escape, there was no turning back an Hannibal knew that. This is why he resorted to guerrila warfare for the next 20 years instead of leaving, at least with geurrila warfare he can also harm Rome whilst leaving would *only* hurt himself.

7:50 There's a reason why the famed economist John Maynard Keynes called the Treaty of Versailles reparations imposed on Germany after World War One the "Carthaginian Peace" way back in 1919. It ended up enraging a powerful country that, in response to its own humiliation, saw the rise of highly capable and vengeful military leaders and the emergence of another major war.

One of the reasons they refused to concede to a compromise in the war was that they NEEDED French reparations' to save their collapsing economy, which in turn made the war last longer, which in turn made them need those reparations' even more. By the end of the war communist uprisings were occurring all over the country largely due to the non-existent economy (as well as widespread famine). Given how this episode starts I feel obligated to quote Machiavelli's take on mercenaries "I say, therefore, that the arms with which a prince defends his state are either his own, or they are mercenaries, auxiliaries, or mixed. Mercenaries and auxiliaries are useless and dangerous; and if one holds his state based on these arms, he will stand neither firm nor safe; for they are disunited, ambitious and without discipline, unfaithful, valiant before friends, cowardly before enemies; they have neither the fear of God nor fidelity to men, and destruction is deferred only so long as the attack is; for in peace one is robbed by them, and in war by the enemy. The fact is, they have no other attraction or reason for keeping the field than a trifle of stipend, which is not sufficient to make them willing to die for you".

Both empires coming out as the dominant force, getting decadent on the perch as they cannabalize themselves in social and political factionalism. Now we just wait for the Civil War Arc again.

The Second Punic War ! One of the war that change the most the Antique world by his incredible military leaders like Hannibal Barca, Quintus Fabius Maximus and Scipio Africanus....Hannibal showed the world how to encircle a greater force with a weaker army, Fabius and his Fabian Tactic of delaying and weakening his opponent and Scipio and his family who learned from Hannibal tactics and destroyed the Carthaginian empire ! It's the war that defined Rome as an empire and again, showed is magical ability to make infinite legion ! Again, Oversimplified gave us a great episode !!

I don't really regard Scipio Africanus as one of the greatest generals of ancient times along with Hannibal as you said in the beggining. He had plenty of time to learn his strategies to eventually put him down. Is more of a comparison like The Red Baron vs the man who killed the Red Baron. They are not on the same level because eventually every great general/leader will come to an end by an unpopular one in most of the situations. History repeats itself.

I'd say *because* Scipio learned so much from Hannibal, he deserved to be called as one of the greatest generals.
Because great generals always learn from their enemies. Only ignorant generals rely on their own dogmatic education, its literally what caused all the losses of Rome in this war until Scipio turned the tides.
Also, Hannibal himself also didn't just pop out of nowhere and suddenly was this tactical genius. He spent most of his childhood and teenage years alongside his capable father and learning the art of war first handed.
I think you pull a really double-standard here if you wanna downplay Scipio because "he had time", while completely ignoring that Hannibal had this same advantage for himself.
