This games play style is rather unique among the Sierra games. It isn't so much about solving the puzzle in front of you to progress, it is more about the investigation of the characters and exploration of the environment. There is more to looking at an object at times, you might need to come back and notice it has moved or work out who it would have belonged to. You will need to notice and remember things about people and visit areas to check if someone else has been there since you were last around. It also feels like a game that is intended to be replayed over and over. To get that perfect Super Sleuth you will need to know this game very very well and on top of that need to make sure you have a perfect run of the events. Save early, save often applies but so does save smart. All and all a stand out game in the Sierra line and a must play for adventure fans and murder mystery fans.

This game looks really well made. The dithering in the pixel art, like you mentioned, is insane. And also really a creative use of the noise channel in the sound chip. Using it for the sound of the shower going, I would've never thought of that. Shows you how much they used their limited resources to the fullest back in the day.
playing it and finished it in 2017! the fact that I'm playing this game 30 years after its release proves it is a great game, and one of the best of its kind.

The visual style of this game is incredible. It evokes everything I love about the look of old, atmospheric PC games. It's colorful and striking, yet grim.

The way to play this game is with the MT-32 set up via MUNT emulator. This really elevates the soundtrack to the next level and adds multiple ambient sounds as well as treats you with a welcoming message on the MT-32 display
Looks fun. I'm playing a Poirot game right now, and it really leads you by the hand, step by step, thru the game. This one seems much better, more game designers should use it as a model.
That red magnifying glass and the special sheet remind me of the "tech specs" that used to be on the backs of Transformers packages. It has a little rectangular bit of red plastic you could lay over a special part of the box and it displayed "stats" for that particular transformer like speed, strength, and energy projection.
Dear god my great aunt has a clock that chimes like that and it has caused me to have a visceral reaction whenever I hear it. Damn thing used to chime every 15 minutes from 6:30am to 11:00pm.
Great video as always! I always love it when you review these older adventure games as we didn't get a family PC until I was a teenager and by that time these titles had come and gone. I am strangely intrigued by them as I don't have a ton of exposure to these older adventure games except for a handful as I would find them in Goodwill and snatch them up when I could. I was obsessed with this game from when I first played it as a preteen, but I admit the first time I played it I also didn't know about the secret passages and missed out on almost everything.
After you discover Gertie asleep and leave her room, while you're busy picking up and examining the handkerchief, the killer is stepping out of the secret passage and dumping her out the window. The killer then uses some sort of external walkway to leave, because if I recall correctly the game takes a moment out to show you a scene of the killer walking past some windows on the second floor. This only happens the once I think, since on the first floor you can often see the killer walking past windows in all the back rooms of the house. I can't perfectly recall when that little scene happens though, so it might not be connected to Gertie's death. So, while the timing window for the event to happen is ridiculously tiny, but there at least IS a way for the killer to get in and out of the room without having to walk past you.
You probably already know this but when played through Scummvm there is an option to 'un-dither' games that use this engine. While I sometimes like the dithering for nostalgia, the un-dithering for some of the games really looks great in my opinion. This game and Conquests of Camelot really used dithering ALOT, and are most changed with this feature.
I miss the old days with point-and-click adventure games on every corner. Broken Sword: The Serpents Curse was pretty good, proving there is still a place for the genre today.

At least I found the spy holes, but even so I got the sad ending and I don't think I raked more then an average gumshoe. Murder mysteries suit you perfectly! You know, there's a hidden gem from the same genre that no one pays any attention to, shame... It was released originally for the PS2 (then ported to XBOX, PC and PSP) by a big company that made amazing games for many years but is now generally despised by all gamers. That's all I'm saying because of very mysterious reasons, but I do hope it finds its way to you in some form or another.
Oh boy I adore that hideous old colour palette and the wonders the early pixel artists managed with it. Definitely going to give this game a try! (and probably fail dramatically, but oh well)

I think Ethel randomly wandering around was designed to force players to replay the game and get more mileage out of it. Since the internet was in it's infancy reliable widespread information wasn't exactly around so the best way to figure the game out was to actually play it to death. I mean sure, there were bulletin boards and stuff but back in the day they were massively unreliable compared to today where every game is carefully mapped out almost instantly after it's release.
I disagree, I think the random Ethel is a design flaw. The game already has a mechanic and time constraints that force the player to replay it. The way this game is designed is that when you DO figure out what you are doing, it shouldn't mess up by accident. The goal is to figure out where you need to be, WHEN you need to be, and those instances are not based on chance, they are set in stone. Accidents like that shouldn't really be an issue. It should also be noted that the random Ethel problem only happens during a specific time, so it's clear that it was just overlooked since it's not consistent.

I really like that Sierra 16 color dithering style. Much better than the scanned 256 color style they later used.
