    iT security expert here. The fact that the computer “hacking” in this episode was basically just spyware installed via social engineering means that it’s probably one of the most realistic portrayals of how a security breach actually happen in a show or movie.

    I love the development of Jessica’s career. She went from writing in her hometown using a typewriter to renting an apartment in New York and has a ton of cash to get a computer.

      Honestly if you ever meet J.B. Fletcher you need to be nice and polite to her and for the love of god make friends with her. Sure you may get accused of murder but at least you are far less likely to get murdered. Honestly just tell her your her niece or nephew, she has lost count of how many of those she has at this point.

    Alright, I'm calling it now: if they ever reboot Murder She Wrote, you need to be a consulting producer. Somebody who, like, maps the character bible for a 21st-century version and nitpicks every script from the writers' room so that everything at least makes sense, without sacrificing the charm or the cheese. Since NBC Universal is clearly paying attention to your videos, I hope they see this comment and consider it.

      I think J. Michael Straczynski had something to do with the tech. He's the creator of Babylon 5 and was very heavily engaged with his fanbase on usenet newsgroups during that show's run.

      The least believable thing about it is that the computer novice author/sleuth discovered his data theft method while the computer programmer didn't.

      @@SquiresIsle it was J. Michael Straczynski, writer of the episode. The Damned is an actual punk band that played a gig at a club called Godzilla's in Sun Valley in 1982. Maybe Straczynski was at the gig, or maybe someone just told him "The Damned are playing at Godzilla's tonight". In any case, he also used the title later for an episode of a radio drama series, starring Steve Buscemi. The episode is available on youtube.

    "Well, how did he get in [If he didn't have the credentials]?" Honestly, I feel like this guy could have gotten away with sitting in on that class for at least a couple of weeks without signing up. If anyone asked why he wasn't registered, it would be easy to be like "But I am? Maybe the computer's not working right." and any professor I ever had would have gone like "Yeah, OK, I bet you're right."

      I didn't even really think they had prerequisite classes in college. You could sign up for any class you wanted to pay for, it's just that you'd likely have no idea what was going on if it was too advanced, fail, and have to pay to take it again. Especially back when this show was on.

      Seriously it's called auditing- usually they tell you to just go and then talk to the teacher. Heck, sometimes you can even take a course for credit without the prereqs if the professor thinks it's fine

    You know, maybe one of the reasons the episode wasn’t sloppy with tech (aside from disc) was because it was co-produced and written by J. Michael Straczynski, who did a lot to interact with fans online and promote tech in his shows, like Babylon 5. He’s also a huge comic book writer!

      JMS talked about updating the status quo of the series in his memoir. Though if I recall correctly, he later decided to leave partially due to creative conflicts with Lansbury (whom he still praised a lot).

    I was actually watching Murder She wrote when this popped up! The one where Jessica stumbles into becoming a Madame at a brothel, it's bananas and honestly I'm eager for that episode as well.

    I love how in, like, season 4 she's like "I don't think I'll ever use one of those weird computer things," and then by season 10 she's going "I brought my laptop with me on the plane so i could get some writing done." In this house, we call that growth.

    The notepad on the back of the phone was a speed dial directory. EVERYONE used them and, if your family was ridiculous, order was a big deal. Speaking of order, many used them for take out places as god intended.

      I don't think we ever wrote down what our speed dial buttons were is the thing, so all those on our phones were pristine, if yellowed. (Really, pretty sure there as only 1 ever programed in anyway.)

      Ours was Pizza Hut, some family members and a funeral home. (The funeral home had a number a digit off from ours and people would leave messages for them on our answering machine, so we'd get home and then have to call and give them their messages at least weekly.)

    I was recently on a trip in Belfast and the guy from the airbnb had a golden girls and a murder she wrote pillow in neon colours in his otherwise very neutral living room he also had the matching hand towels, apron, mugs and plates. Everytime I saw them I thought of your channel lol

He was a big enough fan of British Sci-fi that he attempted to follow in Terry Nation's footsteps by writing the entire first season of a show by himself... (Terry's show was Blake's 7, JMS's was Babylon 5) so he'd be the first place I'd look for the source.

    Actually a great episode that you should consider for the future is “hit, run, and homicide”. It’s from season 1. It’s the second episode to take place in Cabot cove and it features a driverless cars trying kill people and Jessica playing an arcade game and almost being driven off a cliff by the driverless car! It’s great and definitely up your alley

    8:20 - Yes, we had that *EXACT* model of cordless phone, and parents wrote the requisite local police non-emergency, fire, and poison control numbers, plus a couple aunt and uncles. But only the local ones. Not the ones that would be a long distance call. :-D
    I don't think I ever called any of them.

      You'd have to do "Widow, Weep for Me" and maybe the russian ballet episode from the first season first, because JB as in Jailbird involves recurring characters from those episodes. (Also Widow, Weep for Me was confusing in general... and introduces one of my favorite recurring characters... so maybe it's worth covering on its own? :P) I just started season 6, does the kgb agent ever show up again?

      @@Sam_on_TH-cam King's Quest and Laura Bow games were amongst my favorites during the Sierra's golden era though I equally loved Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Gabriel Knight and Police Quest series too not forgetting some of those one timers like Conquest of Camelot and Codename: Iceman. Had many of these on my pimped up Amiga 500. Sierra was the household name in computer gaming back then.
      Btw, I really had to google out if "Roberta sent me" password would've worked too after seeing your reply and now I feel a bit stupid.

    The Encarta Puzzle game felt like such a fever dream for so long-then I heard just enough people bring it up to solidify its reality in my mind.

    80s computers will always be my favorite because the general public didn't understand them yet, so all you had to do was type on the keyboard and all the plot-convenient information would pop up on the magic monitor 😄 In fact, if you'd care to check out _Tales from the Darkside_ sometime (I think it'd be right up your alley), "Word Processor of the Gods" from the first season is based on a short story by Stephen King and definitely worthy of this channel.

    I love your Murder, She Wrote videos! I keep wanting to make a request but there are so many that I couldn't choose just one (though this video being from season 8 makes me remember watching "Danse Diabolique" with my grandma). Also, one of the detectives is played by Charles Cyphers, aka the sheriff in Halloween, and it always seems like every time I see him in something, he's either a cop or a coach.

    Rewatching this one. I really like that Jessica wasn't a curmudgeon, and even if she was a bit bewildered by new technology at times, she also opened herself up to the possibilities and kept a positivity that is sometimes missing from older characters in fiction.

    I love these! You have even gotten me into watching Murder She Wrote, while I crochet. I am truly an old small town woman at heart. I think you should do Season 1 Episode 7 "Lovers and Other Killers" It is crazy. What is the lady in the cold open doing with that music box (it never comes up again)? Where did Jessica get that baby? Since when did she know Mandarin? And that's only the fist 5 minutes! Younger men, mysterious figures, it has it all. Hope to see your take on it someday. Thanks for the amazing content!

    I believe this move to the big city and the use of a computer was part of JMS (Joe Michael Strazinsky) coming to work on the show.
    He talks about it in his autobiography about how he wanted to show older people using and understanding computers on TV so as to encourage their use among older viewers.
