    The meaning of this scene is that the emporer knew that if he made a big show of it then the honor of House Atreides wouldn't allow them to refuse. Basically forcing them into a situation they can't escape.

    • @DOOMRUL3Z

    • @marquistf1996
      @marquistf1996 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1603

      No. It’s not about honor. A recurring theme for Atredies leadership is risk taking. Letos father died fighting bulls. His son says “avoiding risk is the path to weakness.” Their descendants millennium into the future have the same philosophy. Leto could have escaped into exile but choose to gamble on the freemen. He made the right choice.

    The thing with Paul was that he had the best of all possible educations. His mother taught him the ways of the word via her bene gesserit training, the computational and logistical way of thinking via the mentats, and then of course the training he received from Gurney to fight and defend himself. The exchange they have afterwards, "is that it, is it done?" Says it all. He knew it was a death sentence, and he went forward anyway. Not that there was really any alternative. If he rejected the Emperor's order, he likely would have attacked them on Caladan anyway. The Emperor was paranoid about House Atreides, and they were as good as dead the moment he suspected them. Ironically, had the Emperor done nothing to the Atreides, he would have likely remained Emperor to his dying day instead of being deposed by Paul.

      The alternative was not to stay on Caladan (there's no "likely" there, they are not allowed to refuse an edict), but to flee the planet and go into hiding as one of the rogue Houses, which Leto did consider but ultimately decided against.
      He thought they could leverage the "desert power" of Arrakis, the Fremen, to win the upcoming conflict, but didn't bank on the Emperor sending Sarduakar, or on the Harkonnen attack coming so soon.

    • @Randoman590
      @Randoman590 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      The Emperor didn't know of the Fremen or the prophecy. Most of the galaxy don't understand the true nature of the Fremen. The Harkonnens ruled Arrakis for 80 years and they thought there were only 50,000 Fremen on the whole planet.
      The prophecy of the Lisan al-Gaib was one of many stock myths planted by the Bene Gesserit on various pre-FTL worlds thousands of years ago, so that if a sister of the order ever winds up stuck there, the culture is set up to help her... or in this specific case, for her to help them. Paul's training in the Way was also a secret. But Princess Irulan recognises the myths from the Bene Gesserit catalogue when she hears the stories of Muad'Dib, because she's one of them.

I loved Dune because Dennis treats his audience with respect, he knows people like to put it together themselves and leaves just enough bread crumbs for the viewer to nibble on. It’s not exactly difficult to understand but the implications but it’s extreme close ups that really hammer home just how much of grip is around their neck.

    Would have required a massive amount of foresight but imagine a moment if Leto had identified the fact that the Harkonnen had inside information and setup contingencies and limited even the inside circles information to Thufir, himself, Paul and Gurney. Backup house shields, additional defensive emplacements that were camouflaged, QRF's, sensor emplacements etc..... There were enough signs there to at least be a BIT more cautious but they thought they were safe behind that damn shield and not once did one of them go 'Hmm, but what if that thing comes down'. That ONE thought would have changed the course of the battle.

      The Emporer (correctly) identified them as his most powerful threat, not by wealth as much by status, reputation, and loyalty. I think he also knew of the prophecies circulating and by this point in the timeline, things have started to point at House Atreides as the source of the Emporer’s downfall. The crazy part is, had he left them alone from Day 1, none of it would have happened 😅

    Yeah he even knew he was screwed what I don’t understand is knowing this why not station a lot more security around the shield dome access and within the company’s itself also if u know that their coming and your time is short restrict all access to quarters and main areas no non was personal allowed within certain areas. Give them 30 guy roving patrols and stationary chiefs at every entrance and exist and secure the main security of the compound areas to have the troops stationed within the only access terminal so to shut down the shield wall you must travel thru the troops barracks and then after that the squad leaders, corporals and then generals at the end to stop and alleviate any main security risks. It’s what I don’t understand how a dr basically a big bitch could just slip in and shut down a advanced civilizations security system and tech and bring down the strongest house in the imperium. Doesn’t make any sense when thing about it logically. I mean he brought down the whole house with a. Couple stun darts and a comfy pair of shoes

    I've read the books and I liked the movie... but it's sad they felt the need to make random characters female or black, just to appease the PC police. I mean, they should have made all the Freman have dark skin, they are a desert race. That would have made perfect sense.
    But making Kynes a black woman for no actual reason ... is wrong.
    That would be like making the Black Panther movie and making Eric Killmonger a white lady or a transgender eskimo

      oh give it a break, you're seeing things that aren't there. This isn't a typical woke show or film. It's just a normal production with a variety of people. And you should respect her performance, as she obviously respects the role:
      “This was also the one scene that stuck in my head as, ‘You’ve got to get this right, Sharon.’ The one thing I didn’t want to do was try to be a female version of Max [von Sydow]. No one could ever touch what he did because he’s the wonderful actor that he was.”

      @@Gunth0r How am I seeing things that arent there ? Everyone can see it. It's a movie.
      The Dune books are the art of Frank Herbert. When adapting a book into a movie, Hollywood should always respect the work of the author and stick to the book as much as possible.
      Zendaya is a better example. She is not a good fit for her role yet, she was cast because of her skin color and her ability to draw a younger and more "diverse" audience to the movie.
      Actors should be picked for their abilty to act and how well they fit a role... no other reason.
