  • India and Pakistan: Forever rivals?
Seventy years since partition, and the independence of India and Pakistan, relations between the two nations remain turbulent.
There have been four major conflicts and numerous skirmishes since 1947 and yet the territorial disputes between India and Pakistan remain unresolved, and bilateral relations are marked by mutual mistrust.
So, can the two neighbours and nuclear powers ever become friends? What will it take to resolve the seemingly intractable Kashmir conflict? And how much of today’s hostility can be traced back to partition?
To debate this in this UpFront special, we're joined by a former foreign minister of each country: Hina Rabbani Khar, Pakistani foreign minister from 2011 to 2013, and Shashi Tharoor, Indian minister of state for external affairs from 2009 to 2010 and a current opposition MP.
"I believe the fundamental problem that prevents meaningful friendship is, and I'm being very blunt here, the nature of the Pakistani state," says Tharoor, author of the 2017 book Inglorious Empire: What the British Did to India. "In India, our state has an army; in Pakistan the army has a state. And the army’s desire to continue to control an extraordinary set of resources and privileges ... gives it a vested interest in stirring up troubles."
"[W]hereas in Pakistan the military historically had a role, and now the democratic dispensation is eagerly taking its space back," says Khar, who remains a member of the Pakistan People's Party, currently in opposition. "I fear that in India, the direction is quite the opposite."

As a Bangladeshi, when I look at EU, I honestly feel jealous. Bangladesh, India Pakistan, Sri-lanka, Nepal and Bhutan could do a WHOLE lot better, if they could just put aside the differences and put infront the SIMILARITIES which are MORE, and start working together and have EACH OTHERS backs as friends and neighbours! Like the Rohingya crisis, we could use help from India and Pakistan. Bangladesh can be a negotiator to end the violence in Kashmeer since we have past connections with both countries! We would be VERY WELL OFF, if we had a better confederacy!

It was February, 1835, a time when the British were striving to take control of the whole of India. Lord Macaulay, a historian and a politician, made a historical speech in the British Parliament, commonly referred to as The Minutes, which struck a blow at the
centuries old system of Indian education. His words were to this effect:

I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country,
unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we
replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater
than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated.

The interviewer has been leaning towards Khar several times. here are a few examples:
    1. 2:30 "you sound pessimistic..." -- narrates Tharoor and sets the POV for the audience. Switching back to Khar he pours in all his energy uttering "Optimistic". She took the opportunity and cleverly put two countries on equal playing fields "we have as two countries only added to the basket of problems... ".
    2. 3:36 "It is very fine for you as host.." kind of patronage only helped her winning his favor along the rest of the interview.
    3. Her Siachen point could be easily vilified, had Hasan asked her about justifying Pakistan's demand for demilitarising the mountains while they gave away the adjacent Saltoro region to the Chinese, or had he given Tharoor a chance to counter her point.
    4. 7:30 the question from Hasan came across in such a manner that could so much easily be distorted. The key intent was whether or not she agrees that the Pakistani army controls armed groups that carry out violence 'on both sides of the border '(trying to throw her a cover of victimhood). She took "Military's role in the Kashmir policy" out of the context and digressed it into talking about the front that "Pakistan's government" was putting up. Again no question from Hasan.
    5. 11:36 The only time I think Hasan managed to force her to remain on point. Appreciate.
    6. Through the interview, the format has been, starting with Tharoor, have his finger pointed towards Pakistan and then have Khar defend their position and at times ending with an allegation back at India, and Hasan moving on with the next question back at Tharoor. Even at the end of the interview, Khar gets to end it with her account. This pattern had systematically undermined Tharoor.
    Final Thoughts:
There are other points to substantiate this claim. It is left as an exercise for the audience to find them.
Like wars never determine who is right. Debates too can just tell you who is the winner. And here apparently Hina Khar is the one if we ignore the bias. Unless she was not set up.

She is wrong, Liberalism can never have its foothold in Pakistan the way India or the west deem liberalism to be.
We were formed on theocratic basis. and will likely, like to remain that way. Different countries have different ways of administrating. Ours is this, like it or not. I hate to break it you, but theocracy also empowers the nation and people, emboldens free speech, and is a proponent of democratic repertoires.
As for military intervention, it has always occurred due to ineptitude of the civilian leadership, whose politics is castigated on kinship and patronage rather than the national interest of the country. Military shall not have a role in politics, rightly so, but when there is a vacuum of leadership, it has to be filled. Root cause of military interference is civilian leadership not having allegiance to the state but only to their kin.

The answer to all questions is very simple and logical, which is, governments of both countries don't want as nations of both countries do intend to mingle and have respect and a good feeling for each other. In many counties where Pakistanis and Indians are, they reciprocate with open arms. For both governments, it is an escape-goat strategy to get the attention of the citizens diverted with such animosity whenever they feel their own nations are asking for the answers for not the development, alleviation of the poverty, free education, the equal justice system, etc, promised earlier.

Glurp puffloid I believe the term status quo was used on numerous occasions by shashi tharoor in the video. look it up.

Glurp puffloid the status quo implied the amelioration of situations after kargil (except 2008-2009 when diplomatic channels were broken due to mumbai terror atracks), and despite the Yuri strikes diplomatic efforts were being made, essentially it means "let us agree to disagree". This is not the same as pushing for peace imo, since peace seems unachievable currently.

If Jinnah and Jawahar were still alive then.... they would have asked each other “what proportion of minorities did we begin with in 1947 and proportion of minorities do we have today?”

@@AvanRoyOfficial he liberated half of kashmir otherwise whole kashmir would have been fighting for freedom. Nehru also promised to hold plebiscite in kashmir but his successor didn't fulfill the promise that caused bloodshed between 2 neighbor. It's not right to study half history
