    How do you feel about the firmware? On one hand I'm happy to have it butt at the same time I'm really annoyed that it took Canon two years to come up with a solution to the overheating issue. Personally I feel like they could have done this a long time ago but were holding out till the R5 C sales started to come down. What do you think?

    You’re so right in your rant. Their focus is profit rather than supporting their customers with their businesses. I’ve experienced this with Canon before with the 5D3. They haven’t changed. Just bought the R5C but haven’t opened with so I’m sending it back after this. Thanks so much.

      You're welcome thanks for the comment. I Canon needs to focus on changing it's reputation. They make good products bet they need to cultivate a positive connection with customers. The R5 is fantastic now with the new firmware you'd only need the R5C for high end video work,

      I’m now thinking of getting the R5. I have about 3x great EF lenses which I invested in new so don’t really want to upgrade to RF just yet. It’s great you showed how the 16-35 EF worked, not many reviewers do. I’ve heard you can’t use many of the features with EF. Have you found it ok in comparison to the RF’s in particular the IBIS.
      R5C is lacking IBIS so I’m afraid it won’t be as good for photography or videography with EF. My main business is photography but am under pressure from clients to supply video too now. Need to capture that market as well.

    Hey man
    Once again thanks for the video
    The 8k raw message is because the CF Express card is the hottest thing in the camera when recording
    And given I have left mine in my card reader before, it heats up even when not in use. It's a weird interface issue and is literally the cause of most of Canon's over heating due to them not making g a proper heat sink around it
    The heat then puts the reader/Writer in a slower read/write mode due to heatsoak

      You're welcome thanks for the comment and being part of the channel. Your explanation makes sense. I've noticed how hot my card gets sitting in the reader too. Hopefully Canon has engineers are working on that and the the issue is fixed in the mark II version of the camera.

I'm FINALLY at the point that I am ready to get an R5 for myself (been shooting JVC for 4k and Canon 5d mk III for photos and some vid) and this video really helped me solidify my decision! I also shoot hybrid (mostly weddings) and I thank you for all the information.

It's on a totally different level. Getting used to the eye AF and some of the new features will be a learning curve but should be easy to figure out. When you get your R5 come back to the channel I have a few good tutorials on how to do things with the R5. Thanks again for the comment.

    my business model for buying equipment has always been watch the reviews on a canon camera for 2-3 years then buy it used when the next new camera comes out and everybody starts selling. 6 months ago I bought a slightly used C200 for half price without having to deal with any glitches or firmware issues. in 2 years I'll know if I want a C70 or an R5 or something else because all the eager buyers will have ranted about what is good or bad. My clients never ask for the newest tech and I would rather use the older equipment I know and trust and let someone else sort through the frustration.

      You are a smart buyer. That's exactly what I used to do before I started doing the TH-cam thing. Unfortunately for me to get the views I have to have the latest gear because that's what people want to see but for years I would also wait for new gear to get older before I bought it. Why pay full price? Especially now since advancements in tech aren't that staggering. Most of the time you're paying for marketing hype and features that don't really make a difference. Agreed with the Canon rant. After firmware updates i am finally happy with my C70 and R5. But for future upgrades or changes to my equipment, Canon just has a very sneaky and greedy reputation in my perception. Then again maybe they waited 2 years so that people’s camera’s don’t start dwindling in performance due to heat and cold variation too soon. So now 2+ years of lifespan they figure people won’t be as angry if something happens, plus won’t be in warranty.

    • @vaskoobscura_

      That thought had crossed my mind as well. The R5 Mark II is probably 2 years away as well. With the new Nikon R8 being rumored to be direct competition to the R5 it's going to create some competition at that price point. It will be interesting to see what happens.
      Thanks for the comment.

    It is the way to make money. This is the simplest explanation and very likely the right one. Plain and simple. Canon is a company and their mission is to maximize profits, not give you the perfect hybrid camera. Just like Apple.
    I agree with you.
    However, as another postered mentioned, I just used 4k crop mode which was downsampled from 5.1k for my 4k. No overheating and no shutdowns. Maybe not the absolute best IQ, but it worked for 2 years. Of course, I am not a video professional so my needs were not critical at all, but if I were, I’d be pissed. But we all have to keep in mind that none of these companies are our friends, they exist to generate profits. People gotta eat, and people at the very top gotta get filthy rich.

    I agree with you about Canon and this firmware. It's ridiculous that they had these artificial restrictions in at the beginning, and I think it was just to steer people toward their more expensive cinema cameras and even the later R5C. I think the "overheating" problems were deliberate, and they were rightly pummeled in the press for it.
    But I think what happened was that Canon took a look at the competition as well as their sales figures and realized they couldn't get away with handicapping this camera anymore. The Nikon Z9 was just too good, and there's a Z8 on the horizon that will take direct aim at the R5. Plus, the Sony a1, a7S III, and a7 IV are all incredible video cameras that have come out since the R5 was released.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you. The competition was probably a big factor in the removal of the video overheating restrictions. I just don't understand what Canon is thinking. By restricting their cameras to force people to buy their cinema cameras they are also forcing people to buy other brands as well. I know too many people who have switched to Sony cameras just because of the video features they have. Canon lost a lot of market share by trying to protect their cinema line.

      Awesome good luck with the update. If the camera gives you issues update to firmware 1.5. 0 first then update to the newest. If you want to record really long with the R5 consider an external recorder. It will record the video feed coming out of the R5's hdmi port and you can record for hours. After the 1.6 upgrade, the twitching of the background has improved, but it's still uncomfortable. I use RP+RF16mm and it's fine. Because RP doesn't have IBIS. Again, I'm fine with the Canon 250D and the EFS10-18 because the 250D doesn't have IBIS. Therefore, I think the IBIS design of R5/R6 is not perfect. Better not have.I don't know why every video says that 1.6 has been upgraded, the problem is solved, it's great. In fact, the problem is still there!

      I agree. I noticed in my test it's better but it's still not 100% but it's definitely in the area I would say is usable. As you said the IBIS design in the camera is probably the issue. But at the same time I feel like Canon created advertising selling a camera that hasn't lived up to it's hype till now. I bought the R5 for the video feature which were unusable for two years.

      @@vaskoobscura_ Not all video users need long duration recording without a Atomos Ninja V. Extra gear is a pain but it is doable for those that need it. I for one only shoot short clips of a couple minutes maximum. The Sony 4K cameras sold before the R5 overheated. Only recent Sony models include the standard/high temperature switch. I suspect Canon did a bund reliability tests that take lots time to perform to validate the additional wear the higher temperatures bring. As an engineer I deal l with the lifetime tradeoffs required for high temperature operation. The lifetime of the CF Express B cards is also an issue since they run darn hot and come close to causing pain or burns in people with sensitive skin. Not everyone burns at the same temperature. There are many factors here you may not be familiar with. I believe Canon got pressured by market reaction to R5 and Sony's use of a standard/high temperature setting solution. Product liability lawsuits are very expensive and they happen much more frequently when you operate closer to critical specification. Sony is more aggressive in these things than Canon. I am glad they put the standard high switch in. It gives more time but it is not a complete solution. The R5C has a fan and that is a engineering solution if you want unlimited thermal operation.

      I can't argue with you there the 30min record limit on the R5 is a real pain especially now since the overheating issues have been improved. But when it comes to photo quality and quality glass it's hard to find another camera that can compete with the R5. The detail and celerity of an R5 plus RF 85 f1.2 is hard to beat. Every system has it's positives and negatives.

    the 30 minute limit sucks, not sure if it’s a tax thing, at first I thought it was the Japanese government, then later saw it might be EU regulations. That means that Nikon and Sony will have the same limits.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a tax put on video cameras (anything that can shoot video longer then 30 minutes) but that tax was abolished several years ago. The only reason Canon cameras have a 30min limit now is because Canon wants them to have a 30min record limit. Other brands have removed those recording limits on their cameras already.

    It's hard to know why Canon is just now giving users the option of letting the R5 get hotter in order to achieve longer run times. It could be the cripple hammer, though it is completely plausible that it is not. We _do_ know that heat and wider temperature fluctuations lead to accelerated aging of internal components, including the sensor. It is plausible that these higher temperature thresholds will lead to more stuck and dead pixels as well as premature component failures. Canon may have wanted real world data on failure rates at the original temperature limits before allowing them to be raised. It is also possible that they didn't want to be replacing internal parts under warranty. At this point, it is likely that the majority of R5 bodies that will be sold have already been sold. Most failures will happen out-of-warranty at this point.
    On a different subject, it is worth noting that SanDisk's 128GB and 256GB CFx cards are class-trailing in terms of speed. This isn't true of their 512GB and above capacities. (This is pretty well documented online.)

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your point defiantly makes sense. Canon's 5D series cameras had a product cycle of 4 years with the R5 now being 2 years old we can assume it's half way though it's product cycle. Maybe by the time the components fail from overheating the R5 Mark II will be on the market and that will create more sales for Canon. Who knows. Clearly the R5 was capable of shooting at higher temperatures from the beginning.
      Personally I feel like Canon brought out this new firmware because of the Nikon R8. The rumors are suggesting that it will be designed to be a direct competitor to the R5 in features. This might have forced Canon's hand and might even get them to remove the 30min record limit as well. But again this is also just speculation.
      Thanks for the comment and the tip on t he memory cards. Looks like i'll have to invest in a better memory card if I want to record internally. I'm going to go do some reading on that. Thanks.

      @@vaskoobscura_ Every camera company does this. In fact, every company that sells product does this. I suspect the R6 will get a similar firmware at some point but it will take time. I think they have been testing the hardware's ability to resist heat before implementing so that cameras aren't suddenly dying and they are faced with a bigger issue.

  • @xkben90

    I can understand the annoyance with canon waiting 2 years, but let’s be honest: they have always been the company to play on the safe side since day 1. We all knew that going into their system.
    Nobody complained about Sony cameras overheating, so I feel there is definitely marketing bias in that sense. I think we should be grateful Canon is now competing on a high level with other companies on the video specs.
    There isn’t a single camera out there that can compete with the R5 now in terms of strong video capabilities, high MP photos, great autofocus, and decent low light. Panasonic series is close minus autofocus. Sony has A7IV but it’s cropped 4K, Sony has A7Siii but it’s 12 MP only. I’d say the R5 packs way above its price, especially now with the 1.6.

    About your R5 rant
    I myself also have the R5
    I got it 6 months into its cycle after some of the overheating fixes in firmware version 1.2
    And I was able to use a it pretty much exactly as I wanted to because I knew about the restrictions
    Except for on 2 occasions which were wedding engagements and a theatre performance both of which where saved by me having a Ninja V
    Also at the time I still had my EOS R which I used for secondary camera
    For the overheating I was using the battery removal and date change trick in order to extend the battery life up until 2 hours, which meant I had to improvise when I did that
    About the R5C
    2 months ago I had the opportunity to get the R5C, and was considering either getting that or a mavic 3 drone. The R5C was only a consideration specifically due to the video limits as there were some jobs I didn't even apply for due to the limits
    And I figured that I can work with the video limits but having a new drone would be more beneficial than having 2 canon cameras, especially with one of which I had never used before(or at least the sysyem)
    So I got lucky now that this update has happened and given instagram's persistence on creating more reach for video than for photos, now finally I too can say that I own one of the best hybrid cameras on the market
    But Canon did kinda do themselves dirty
    But it's because they still believe that their customers should buy 1 camera for video, 1 for photos

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kenny thanks for the comment and sharing your story. Yes now you do have one of the best hybrid cameras on the market. I can just imagine if you invested all that money into an R5C only to find out that the overheating issues on the R5 would be gone with a firmware update. That would have been so frustrating. Guess you made the right choice going for that drone. I just picked up a Ninja V last month and am learning how to use it. It really turns the R5 into a pro video camera.
      I think the future is hybrid cameras. One camera for photo and one for video is such an old way of thinking especially since both video and photo technologies overlap so much.
