    Always appreciate your videos, Simon, but I think this is one of the best. Well done. I think you hit it - most manufacturers are putting out product now without fully robust testing just to keep product flowing. So Canon took the only course available - protect the internals of the camera (and their reputation) while they took the time to fully test its limits. Then issue an update. It was indeed better to get the complaints than the lawsuits. Looking forward to the high ambient temp tests.

    I know a lot of people thought the R5 just needed a fan and unlimited recording but I feel like the R5c really is a better video/hybrid cam. The image quality is somehow even better with improved dynamic range, improved highlight roll off, better codec options, and is just amazing. It’s nice that they’re opening features on the r5 though.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The R5c is definitely better. The entire time I was recording this video I kept thinking, just recommend the R5C, but it does cost a lot more, and I think more people will buy the R5. I would have bought the R5c if it was out when the R5 was released.

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker and honestly, video isn’t the priority for everyone. So, having the ability to take excellent video with a more affordable camera. This means that every last feature the R5c has is hidden inside the R5. Someone needs to jail break the R5.

    • @MrMolotov69
      @MrMolotov69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you say the r5c is better? It may have one step better useable dynamic range (at best) but it uses the same sensor. However it has really bad battery life which means you need an external battery rig plus it has less reliable autofocus, is more expensive and no ibis (which is very useful for stills and handheld video). The video OS in the r5c is nice but switching between video and photo on the r5c is noticeably longer than on the r5.

    I get so tired of replacing batteries that I have a Battery Grip on all my cameras. Including my R5 which I been shooting 4k/60 clips and photos without a over heat warning after a 4 hour shoot. I've been doing this for over a year. I usually shoot sailboats out in Lake Union, Seattle which temps very from 60ºF to 80ºF. I haven't done scientific note-taking because this was just real world get the job done first research later. 😊 I don't do long recordings (2-4 minutes clips as I'm doing hybrid shooting), but the camera is on the full duration of the shoot which is about 4 hours. The camera body does get hot which I've been thinking of buying thick gloves so I don't have to keep putting my hand into the water to cool it off.
    I have the camera on my mechanical gimbal while shooting video (sometimes I'm hand holding for photos with the gimbal still attached) on a chase boat that I often have to stand and lean on the Samson post to keep me steady and not falling out of the tiny boat. This got me thinking that the heat from the batteries is below the camera in the grip which at least it's not contributing to the OH problem. I was shooing in July which means I was using firmware 1.3.1. I do use dual Anglebird 256GB cards. (CFexpress and SD V60 for backup).
    I've been watching (I'm sure you have too) the Deaf Director TH-cam channel and he uses the Atomos V recorder (only 4k recording). He said he's found the internal view finder and the backscreen that contributors to over heating. He's recently pushed the R5 limits with the new 1.6.0 update. th-cam.com/video/dcm3yJUi79A/w-d-xo.html
    It's got me thinking that since I'm using a mechanical gimbal that to get a better view of the action that I should purchase the Atomos V+ (records 8K) for my video clips and photos. Then if there is ever a day I have to shoot in 90º+ weather, I'll feel confident that my R5 won't OH and I'll have a larger screen to work with on the chase boat.
    Notes: I shoot IPB lite which is pretty impressive compression. Deaf Director demonstrated that it's pretty good quality for what it is. I normally never use compression of any kind but I think Canon has got it right with IPB and IPB lite.

    Great video as always. I hope people appreciate all the time it takes for you to put something like this together. I sure do. On the 30 minute record limit, my theory is that once a camera is registered with the limit, it can never be changed. Not because they don’t have the technical ability to do so. I believe legally they cannot. I am struggling to think of any single camera, from any single company, that had a 30 minute limit removed via firmware. The only way I’ve ever seen anybody do it, is to come up with a new or updated model. And that would
    Have a new registration.

    • @OrdinaryFilmmaker
      @OrdinaryFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe its something like operating systems. Apple used to charge for them, then one year they made it free, but if you wanted an older version, you still had to pay for it. I don't understand the legality as they are the ones writing the contracts ;) Just have people sign a new EULA ;)

      EU rule states that any digital still camera with a resolution higher than 800x600 and the duration of video of 30 minutes of more (at 23 fps or higher) must now be classified as a 'video camera recorder' and hence be taxed at a higher rate.
      Even after July 2019, when the 30 minutes was removed by the EU, they did not remove the 800x600 pixel limit = 1.44 million dots display.
      So Canon R10, Fujifilm XT-2 and Sony A7IV has a display of 1.04million dots. R7 has 1.62 dots for 3:2 stills. At 16:9 video mode R7 has less than 1.44 million dots.

    That must have taken a lot of your time, you have a very understanding family. This is great news, especially for event video and studio work. But it is galling that after 30 mins you have to press record again. Obviously you might have to change the battery in any case if out in the field but with a fake battery power it's easy to forget to press record again. Does the camera log when the high temp mode is set and for how long ? This might cause the resale value to fall if it could be accessed (like shutter count). Or even the suspicion that it's been used might reduce resale values. What do you think ?

    With your tests you had the same results that I got with my R5 after the firmware update 1.6.0 I too have like you my R5 since July 2020. Now we can say that the only mode that is still slightly problematic at overheating is the 4k 120fps. In my opinion this is one of the reasons why Canon has not yet removed the recording limit of 30 min (or 7min50sec in slowmo) surely the company does not want consumers to push too much overheating with the 4k 120fps. In summary, personally, I quite happy with this firmware 1.6.0. because I can now do 4k oversampled 8k, the mode I like the most from the Canon R5!

      @@CarlLoop If anything it would make thermals worse. Yes metal is more thermally conductive than plastic, but you want as little material between the heat source and the air. That said, the best bet would be to have a contact plate with the processor, a heat pipe to carry the heat away, and have the back panel be something thermally conductive instead of plastic which an insulator. Even better would be the R5C setup where even without the fan, having metal fins in there would increase surface area in contact with air, and would help tremendously.

    I suggest you to test noise floor level going up with temperature on 8k raw recording with maximum ISO. Hot sensor has more noise and as a result - lower dynamic range. I believe that this is a sacrifice they did with this update.
    Keep some very dark detailed picture in the shot to see if it ramps up noise reduction.

      Very good point Max. You're the first to mention this. I've been wondering this myself.
