    On November 14th 2017, Zimbabwe military troops drove tanks into the capital city, Harare. They patrolled the streets, blocked access to government buildings, and took over the state television station to insist….
    This is not a military takeover of government.
    Once praised as a war hero, Robert Mugabe helped Zimbabwe win independence from Great Britain in 1980. He became president under Zimbabwe’s new constitution with the support of the people.
    But soon, he digressed into a repressive dictator.
    He secured his power through aggression and threats, there have been reports of state-sponsored torture and killings.
    And even though Zimbabwe is technically a democracy, there’s evidence Mugabe rigged elections in his favor.
    Now that Mugabe is 93 years old, and reportedly in poor health, the fight for political influence is more important than ever.
    And it’s caused a split in Mugabe’s own party, the ZANU-PF.
    On one side we have the old guard lead by Mugabe’s sacked vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa. Like Mugabe, he fought for Zimbabwe’s independence and has a checkered past that includes human rights abuses against political opponents and ethnic minorities.

  • @thenexerus

    Zimbabwe never had a war of independence against Great Britain. Independence was declared unilaterally in the 60's, by the country's white minority government. Mugabe fought in the Bush War to put Zimbabwe under majority black rule, not to make the country independent--it was already independent when he took power.

  • @SmileForeverEra
    @SmileForeverEra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +804

    I'm Zimbabwean, YOU ARE WRONG. Grace is not mostly disliked because of her "shopping habits". She is disliked because she assumed she must be a successor and over estimated her political capital.
    You are most probably right in that corruption will continue but this video neglects the bi-partisanship shown in all this. Take today (18/11/2017) for example. A rally was held against RG Mugabe by war veterans and it was attended by a mix of people.
    You have over simplified the issue. Zimbabweans are not stupid. We still expect to go to elections next year and vote out people we KNOW are corrupt. We are also grateful for the work that has been done by the military and the organisers of this.
    This may not be tge most optimal conditions but it is NECESSARY.

    • @Jonatrus
      @Jonatrus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +180

      Good point. Its nice to read information from an actual Zimbabwean. I think Vox oversimplified the issue because they have to explain it to people who firstly don't live in Zimbabwe and secondly to make it easier to understand.

    • @SmileForeverEra
      @SmileForeverEra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      Jonatrus I suppose that's true. It's just unfortunate the kind of perception people then have and we then fault them for being 'ignorant'.
      This coup has been the most peaceful coup ever (possibly). There's a reason for that, and that reason just isn't in this video.

      I'm a foreigner and I say African countries need a strong leader to bring back the administrative capabilities of their former colonizers... what I mean is like European-style politics I guess
      I know someone may be offended by what I said but I am not racist, I just want governments in Africa to be similar to those in Europe because European governments are mostly successful.
      feel free to correct me if im wrong, but pls dont cancel me

    • @amadouirving
      @amadouirving 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@redshuttleredacted6422 right on. Africans do need to take example from European countries. Unfortunately, those European countries themselves depend on the corruption going on in Africa to survive. Anytime African leaders attempt to radically change things (cough cough Ghadaffi cough cough Sankara cough cough) they end up getting killed or removed from power. There is no clear proof, but we all know that the orchestrators of those murders are Europeans. So truly, it’s European’s fault, not ours. Or maybe we share the fault.

A 'clean' politician will have no powerful allies vis-a-vis a corrupted politician who is wealthy and can sustian his/her alliance. Thats why in an extremely corrupted system, even the "honest and well meaning politicians" will choose to be corrupted just to survive politically.

      Kind of a bold statement for a country that receives as much foreign aid as Zimbabwe, don't you think? The West is going to keep intervening in the internal affairs of impoverished nations under the guise of providing them aid, which anyway goes towards lining the pockets of the rich, thus increasing the inequality discussed in the video.
      Again, I am in no way saying that Western intervention is good, just that it's imminent in the face of receiving huge amounts of foreign aid. What's worse than the intervention though is the fact the money does not even actually reach those who need it the most. Is there no way the people can lobby for greater transparency from the government? Pressure from the international community can actually be a great way to achieve that.

    1:09 Technically, Mugabe did not gain independence from the UK. Rhodesia's white government had declared independence unilaterally in 1965 to avoid the implementation of black majority rule and became a republic in 1970. There was a brief reversion to being a colony in 1980 before Rhodesia became Zimbabwe with a universal franchise vote.

      This is a very interesting question - not just with Zimbabwe, but worldwide. I believe it is because being involved in politics is always voluntary... you choose to be involved. You choose to run for president. The issue with this is, like Jerry Seinfield said, "Anyone who thinks they can be the president is insane. Leader of the free world? Yeah, that sounds like me. The one with the finger on the button, making all the choices for millions of people? Yep. There is absolutely nobody better than me." I believe truly that, anyone who is running for power WANTS power. This could mean they have anything from a little bit of an ego to being massively corrupt, House of Cards-style. Power-hungry people are going to flock to where there is the most power available... and who has more power than political leaders?

    Here in India, the newspapers completely omitted the military action part.
    It stated that there was widespread public anger over Robert Mugabe planning to make his wife Grace as the next president instead of Mnangagwa, so he was forced to resign & expelled from his own party the ZANU-PF under public pressure & Mnangagwa took over power with popular support. I also remember the newspaper bearing a photo of an anti-Grace demonstration with a placard where it was written in English - 'Leadership is not transmitted sexually'.

    "Military troops"? Nice failed attempt to sound sophisticated. The word you are looking for is "soldiers".

      But they are from the military right ?
      I mean In africa
      A soldier can describe a paramilitary troop or a rebellion troops or a Terrorism Faction Troop etc
      I think they are correct.

    Excellent reporting. I had not expected that part at the end that provided the greater context and analysis. Imagine if more news went that extra step in educating the viewer about why this would happen.

    As a Zimbabwean, it is so sad to see my country like this. I remember the 'coup' well. People were cheering and hooting their vehicles. Some fireworks were even let off. If only we could have known. Still I hold on to hope that eventually everything will turn out right and true, compassionate, good leaders will arise for the good of all people and animals and turn this country around. Hold on, fellow Zimbabweans. We will get through this.

    this is my birth country I live in SA now, but I can tell you this, all Zimbabweans even those abroad are hoping for Mugabe to go out, but we know that the replacement will still be a corrupt greedy politician, but at least he will not be the terror that Mugabe is.

      Rhodesia had apartheid. The past tense is important because they adopt bequal rights late in the nation's life and the nation it self is no more.

    I️ was in Zimbabwe a year ago for a mission trip, and people are terrified of the government. Sadly the church group here in the states have stopped going to zim. Because of the intensity of the situation for those who knew the issues this was coming. Pray for the people of Zimbabwe. They are extremely poor and I️ imagine even more scared.
