On October 1st Catalonia held a controversial referendum on independence. Before the vote took place, the Spanish Constitutional Courts ruled the vote illegal and sent the national guard to stop it from happening. Despite government opposition, the vote was held and clashes between voters and police ensued.
Ninety percent of the participants voted in favor of independence, but public surveys say that current support for independence in Catalonia is only 41 percent.
Despite the contested referendum results, Catalonia has declared independence unilaterally. In response, Spain is moving to dissolve the Catalan regional government, remove its leaders from office and hold regional elections.

Thats not really. I, myself, would be very happy to support my country, but in return, I would want more development to my city. Many times, cities and rich regions in a country are neglected as a money basket. Politicians don't usually give those regions the support they need to improve their life. My city, for example, has highways that small and no subway, a classroom has 40 students each and hospitals are way too small. Even though the countryside, that has a school that is too big, like with swimming pools. My school has to share a swimming pool with 3 other schools.

@@sangpham9871 True, but in the case of Catalonia they've literally benefited more from infrastructures than many other parts of Spain. Some places on the poorer regions still have roads from the 19th century and the vote of places like Leon literally count less than of Catalonia or Madrid.
england and scotland and wales are all their own countries that are part of the uk. also scotland has historically given far more money to england than it has recieved in return, especially with our oil (more oil than norway btw) because we don't have control over it.

By the way Spain was made when they put a democracy, every Autonomy (Catalonia being one of them) has its own elections, congress and president, and has control over Education, Healthcare and most services, infrastructure and properties. Catalonia is in fact a special case because they have more power than other autonomies, having their own police force, being Catalan an official language (same status as Spanish) and having many other things from a special status. Where is the imposition coming from if they control everything but the money they collect from taxes, and ironically Catalonia receives back more money from Spain than the one it sends from tax collection? I see no way anyone can impose anything on Catalonia honestly. And the hundreds of free and peaceful protests that have been carried out (and had a massive impact mind you) would indicate me quite the opposite.

Taxes in Spain are paid NOT depending on the region you are, but the amount of money you earn. Spain do NOT tax Catalans more than other regions.
If they make more money on average then they will get taxed more than other regions. Making more money on average is made possible by hosting a greater share of more highly lucrative industries.

The effort on doing this video 'the right way' is something you can tell when watching and appreciate a lot. This issue is probably the topic that concerns most people in the whole country, it is something important in Spain. Every broadcast around Spain and political situation done right helps a lot. It is just a pity that such a great and relevant communication channel like this, in the effort of doing their job right, has built the story with an unbalanced bias opinion. This political disagreement is a match between a very noisy little group and the rest of spanish people. Anyway, Great channel! keep on the good job!
Such an amazing video, finally giving a clear overview of the real issue. The topic was taught in school but only by the means of the articles mentioned in the video by which we were supposed to derive the entire problematic. Moreover gonna have an oral exam about it, thanks for clarifying.

I'm Spanish but I'm not Catalan, nor do I want Catalonia to be independent from Spain (for various reasons). But you cannot deny that Catalunya feels like a different country. Not only is the language completely different, but the food, traditions, holidays, culture in general is so different that you cannot compare it to Spain. One of my friends from Sweden was telling me how she went to Spain for Christmas and did traditional ''Spanish'' things like ''caga tió'' and ate ''sopa de galets'' and ''butifarra d'ou'', and i'm 100% sure that if you go outside of Catalonia, other spaniards will have 0 idea what she was talking about.
So what? Do we want states culturally and ethnically clean now? There are plenty of countries where multiculturalism is accepted, where different languages and lifestyles live together in harmony and tolerance. Spain is made from different cultures and identities, like many other countries, and that is desirable and sane way to live in democracy. Intolerants want to rise walls, to divide by ethnicities. Let that not happen in Europe again.

In Menorca (my island) they're trying to remove the right to be seen by a doctor in catalan, our language. They want a Spain with Madrid in the middle, where no territories have a say. And they're achieving it, at least in the Balearic islands.

The infrastructure and factories were set up in Catalunya because the initiative and workforce was in the North. it was Franco who encouraged poorer parts of Spain to emigrate and work in Catalunya in the 50s and 60s where they were generally very welcome and have become so Catalan that many of them also want independence 50 years on. The poorer regions of Spain at the moment have free modern motorways, as they should, the fastest trains in Europe, good hospitals and good schools and this has been a successful distribution of wealth which the Catalans applauded and help to set up from 1979 onwards. The issue and crisis is not about this at all. It is based on a deep resentment of not being respected or listened to, despite contributing more that 20% of the GDP.

Basques indeed have more differences with rest of the Spanish regions than Catalonia. However, in both cases, other closeby regions such as Valencia, or the eastern part of Aragón, in the case of Catalonia, and Navarre, and northeastern Castille for the Basques, specific culture, traditions and personalities are quite similar. Moreover, these autonomous communities share a number of common factors with the rest of the Spanish population, not only language, but traditions, personality and a common heritage. Hence, all the Spanish regions share something from our common history, although each has its own particular traditions, foods and landscapes, we all have been sharing country for 500 years in harmony, and only now, for the personal interests of politicians, who initially created this movement in 2013 to cover up the corruption scandal of the Pujol family, this division has been present. Hope the current situation and the history behind it is now clearer.

In a nutshell: Catalonia earns more money than any other part of Spain, but Catalonia has to pay to the other parts of Spain to keep them functioning well. Catalonia obviously does not like this because they want to use their money for themselves and become independent as they already have their own language. Catalonia won’t be able to become independent, it just can’t happen, Without Catalonia, Spain will be critical.
Catalonia for Spain reminds me how Chechnya being ruled by Russia, albeit with a more democratic facade.

A few points to be made:
1. The UK does not have a constitution like Spain does. Spanish constitution, just like every other constitution in the world (except Ethiopia) forbids such referendum.
2. Scotland was once an independent kingdom, Catalonia belonged first to France and then to the Kingdom of Aragon (and then Spain). It has never been an independent state.
3. Catalonia already has an exceptionally high level of autonomy, at the same level of States in the USA or german Landers. They control their education, healthcare, public TV and they have their own Police force.
4. Spanish autonomous regions can express their rights within the legal framework, the constitution can be changed by the parliament.
5. The catalan tax system is quite fair. There is a greater economic inbalance with in Catalonia. Catalonia has all their provinces conected through high speed trains. Infrastructures could be better without the corrupt catalan goverment (see 3% and Jordi Pujol).

Catalonia has never belonged to France what are you on about. There was this thing called the Spanish March during the High Middle Ages, a bunch of landlords and counties inside the Iberia that was also used as a buffer zone. But that march covered the whole of northern Spain, from Pamplona, not in Catalonia, to Barcelona.

I think the big difference is that India has a federalist government, which gives considerably more power to each of the states over their own internal affairs. Although Spain has devolved some powers to Catalonia, they still feel like they don't have adequate control over their own economy.
I agree with you that a strong, unified country is better for everyone, but I think that if Spain wants to quell separatist sentiment in Catalonia, they need to give them more power on how their tax dollars are spent.
Before Franco, the catalonian people tried to be independent and the second Republic sent the army and finished the independence. It was not only Franco.

It's true that Catalonia proclamed itself as a Republic of the Federal States of Iberia, but then the Spanish government had to discuss about it with Catalonia, obviously Catalonia didn't get the independence while the second republic, but they never sent the army to Catalonia when that happened, by the way, by that time Francesc Macià was the president of the Catalan government.

I'm from Barcelona and I'm SO fed up with the independence movement. The separatists have polarized the society and made a huge ammount of people feel like they are strangers in their own home. Half of the population here is afraid to speak out because of how irrational the separatists have become. Its a sad situation in which the ones who want to overcome a greedy romantic nationalism are generally overrided by being ilogically called opressors or fascists (??). I have friends all over Spain and really saddens me to have to feel like a criminal just because I want to keep belonging together.

The problem is that Catalonia isn't the only region that suffered under Franco. They weren't the only ones who lost their people in opresion not they people who fought him. Dennis Chan You say this like someone who doesn't know much about it. One of the original leaders of this movement within the politics of Catalonia was already gone a couple of years ago. This referendum they talk about, it's their second attempt at it (also, they did make a song and dance about the local elections basicly being one). A large portion of the leaders are actually arrested, and some are coming back to be arrested. This is not over yet, this is far from it.
Do one on South Tyrol, the German speaking part of Italy in the Alps. I would be very interested to find out more about this region in which borders had been re-drawn in 1918!

I’m spanish, and I can tell you that spain is VERY solidaric with the poorer regions. I live in the balearic islands, and we get a lot of money from turism. We pay a quiet high amount of taxes, and then we only get like 75% back, wich is a lot less than in catalonia. In poorer regions like Extremadura they get more than they give. I don’t know where you are from, but your country is probably less solidaric between regions

It was an easy-to-solve political problem, and yet, the police was used against unarmed people who just wanted to vote. That changed it all.

As a Catalonia citizen I can say with no doubt about it that you're wrong. Catalonia has never been selfish, we love helpping the poorer regions. The problem is that the amount of money that we donate to the spanish goverment every year only return the 40% of it. We are the region of Spain that donates more and recive less, but this is not the main issue, we can live with it.
But what we can't stand is that Spain doesn't allow us to do a democratic referendum and decide ourselves the future of Catalonia. In my point of view is the main problem.

I found the territory size/economic output analysis very poor. This kind of measure could be misleading for the viewers of this video. Cities usually work as economic motors of the nations meanwhile rural areas are usually less wealthy. The region known as Île-de-France accounts just for the 2% of France total territory but it contributes for more than 25% of the national GDP. Does it mean they are working more than the rest? Do they deserve a larger piece of cake than the rest of the country?
The graphic shown in this video tries to insinuate that Catalunya is traited unfairly in the Spanish tax distribution but there is no any firm evidence about that opinion other that the total territory of Catalonia in comparisok to its economic output.

I noticed that as well and thought that it was an odd comparison. I then looked up the populations of Catalonia and Spain. 7522 thousand vs 46468 thousand. That means 16% of the Spanish population live in Catalonia, while they pay 21% of the taxes. Sure, it's not 1 to 1, but it sure as hell is a lot closer than 6% vs 21%.
At the very least, a comparison of populations would be a better indicator of whether or not a particular region is over-paying in taxes. According to my calculations, Catalonia represents about 16% of the population of Spain, so the amount of taxes they pay, while perhaps a little higher than would be expected, is not totally unreasonable.
It would have been interesting if you analyzed how this movement connects to other movements of nationalism in Europe, and how it divides along party lines. This was too shallow in my mind.

The issue here is that those who pay taxes feel like they are being robbed, as they don't see that money being invested on their region but on poorer regions of Spain. They want independence because they feel that the government is not fair when it comes to distributing tax money across the country. This argument has been going on for decades and, because of that, in Spain we have the stereotype that Catalans are greedy.

Yes, but we all speak English. Spain has a lot of regional languages that were supressed by the central government and what we call “Spanish” was forced down to the regions and a national identity was fabricated where it hadn’t been before. USA has came to be after nationalism became a thing, so our national identity was organic, but in Europe it’s a new thing relative to how long the cultures have existed. Pretty much every country over there has different regions with different languages and cultures, which is even crazier when you remember how much smaller each country is than the USA all together. The 50 states all chose to be together, while Catalonia was on the losing side of a civil war against Nationalists.

Thank you guys for trying to be objective in this video. There is a lot of missing information, but I understand it's hard to talk about this very complex issue in a 5 min video.
I'm spanish, although I live in the US at the moment. To me, this issue has shown a bigger problem. And that is the blind trust people have in their political leaders. Catalonian independist have used the strong nationalist sentiment of the region to win power. Even blending multiple very different parties in order to rule, with the sole common objective of achieving independence. And the way it's been handled by everyone is extremely irresponsible.
Something that most news outlets don't talk about is that Catalonia is one of richest regions of Spain, because it's part of Spain and the European Union. 80% of goods produced in Catalonia are sold in Spain. Catalonians should be the first ones to try to gain independence (if that's what they really want) the right way. And never impose it, which is what is happening. They are the ones to lose from this.
Most independist only see what their independist leaders want to show them, the fact that they pay more money than other parts of Spain, but that happens everywhere in the world, the richest regions pay more taxes everywhere. That doesn't mean that 'someone is stealing your money' that just means your region is richer, not because Catalans are better than everyone else, but because they benefit from the commerce with everyone else. Without Spain, and with no support from any other country in the EU, Catalonia would have a very hard time maintaining their actual status.

I agree with almost everything you say, independence would probably be catastrophic for Catalonia. But you also say they should try to gain independence 'the right way'. What is the right way in this scenario? This referendum was of course nonsense, because lots of anti-independence people didn't vote and there was no real debate teaching people the consequences. The courts won't allow them to hold an actual referendum, so that couldn't happen anyways. What are they supposed to do if they can't debate it and vote on it. To make it fully legal the Spanish constitution should be changed, which Spain will never do. So what should Catalans who want to gain independence 'the right way' do?

I live in Barcelona, Catalonia's capital.
Although it is a simplification of the crisis (it's hard to condense all the info in a 5 minute video), it was well made. It showed both opinions critically and objectively, something that is becoming hard for Spanish and Catalan press as the conflict escalates. Although it is not up to date (independence was declared on Friday the 27th of October, the Spanish government approved the constitutional amendment that has temporarily suspended the autonomy of Catalonia on that same day, using that same amendment the Spanish president has called for elections on December and half of the former Catalan government is now in prison, with it's president in Belgium to avoid justice) it's a nice summary for people who don't know about the crisis and want to have some information about it.
Also, and this is an important mistake, pro-independence people are not a minority: we just don't know which opinion has the majority yet, although it is close to 50/50. Hopefully the December elections will clear things up a bit.
I proposed this topic when you asked the audience what did they want to see, so thanks a lot for making this video. I really enjoy your content.

And many Catalonians would agree that you can be catalonian and spanish - but when Rayol decided to set the foot and send the police upon voters, instead of starting a debate about the real problems and rifts (taxes, identity and culture) using the referendum as basis, he soured the situation to the point of mutual deafness.
Totally agree. Both sides have made a terrible job at trying to talk and hearing each other. In my opinion this has been the worts of all, which has led us to this extreme and has divided and polarized the society heavily, burying all the nuances in people's opinion under the two-block perspective. Problems are solved by talking, listening and by having healthy respectful debates.
Jamoncito hi! I don't know much about this conflict am just researching it online. However, going by this video its really easy to see its just about money. Catalans don't want to share/carry the poorer neighbours. Will the central government allow 20% of their source of taxes to leave? Haha no way...even I would never agree to that if I were the central government.
Trust me, if only it were about money, it would be much easier to solve... The conflict goes much deeper than that. The good thing is that things have calmed down, and we are going to elections next December 21st, which hopefully will clear things up a bit. Thanks for your comment!
I like the content of this channel (mostly), but I hate the "under 10 minutes" format. I feel like these videos would benefit greatly from being longer, because that would allow for a more in-depth coverage of a subject discussed in the video since many of the topics and issues you're covering are rather complex and warrant more time dedicated to them. I understand you're trying to play a youtube game optimising the length of your videos in order to make them more profitable, but I fell like you're very much limiting yourself by doing that.

I just returned from visiting Barcelona. From the experience I had, it seems more younger generations were in favor of independence and older generations tended to side with Spanish unity. Most people I spoke with, wished for governmental compromise, and generally seemed nervous about the upcoming months. (I also understand the Barcelona is an international city, and may not totally represent the whole of Catalonia)
I believe in Catalonia's need to self identify, but if you allow every region to claim independence, you'd have anarchy across all major countries of the world. At it's core, the vote and declaration of independence were against the constitution, and therefore illegal. It's not surprising the politicians are in trouble. I just hope the citizens get to retain a peaceful home, because it is a beautiful and wonderful culture.
That's because there's been a lot of indoctrination. Teachers make sure that students speak in catalan exclusively. And the mass Media in Cataluña are completely controlled by the government.

The problem in Catalonia is that most Catalan people with enough memory are tired of the imposed Spanish indoctrination, forcing catalans to feel Spaniards...so easy to pick up against catalans, but no Spaniard dare to criticize on basque independence...

Catalonia isn't even that rich in comparison anymore. Madrid the Basque Country and Navarre all have higher GDP than Catalonia. So everyone stop saying that it's the rich region that doesn't want to have to pay taxes to help the poorer ones.
