@@ZovcDrafts Yeah, I have seen that before, good eye. Its also a variation of a sweep we do in Yin Style Baguazhang. The lead arm curves up & out for the engagement, similar to the way fighters from Team Jackson do the throw
Idk if anyone else felt this, but I feel like my sweeps got better after training more judo. I got a much better understanding of bodily momentum and balance that way, and it became a lot clearer on how I can exploit it.
@@luziox7197 well, yeah. They are. But the physics behind it is exactly the same, of course. It's just that in Judo, throws and sweeps are the name of the game, while it's just one aspect of Muay Thai. So in my opinion, if you want to get better at any one aspect of Muay Thai, go find someone who practices a martial art which focuses heavily on that one thing. For learning sweeps and throws, I don't think anything is better than Judo.
@@luziox7197 the grips are different, in Judo you have more control but in MT you have the surprise factor and a higher stance. Specially the stance is what makes it easier in MT even compared to MMA.
A lot of people at my gym, including me, tend to be heavy on our front foot. I think that lead leg inside kick that ends up faceplanting him at 3:35 would be awesome to learn. I've tried it a few times and I don't understand how to make it a sweep/trip and not just a leg kick 😅
Jeff , great compilation of sweeps and looking forward to the sweep tutorial👏. It's not as exciting, but sweep defense worked into that would be helpful....I noticed very few of the sweeps were Thais, and I think their emphasis on kicks/ kick defense is one reason why.... fighters here in the west are often heavy on the front foot/ punchers and don't give attention to their tactics when their leg is caught ... also when engaging in the clinch, establishing your balance is the first thing to do , after protecting your head from interior strikes, to avoid being dumped quickly. Something about sweep compilation videos makes me smile 😃
Jeff those sweeps and dumps were awesome especially that one were you take two steps on the 3 rd movement you use your hips to do a bump thrust action while using your whole arm out stretch to guide your opponent to the floor with the hip bump AWESOME bro. stay blessed from the uk
That Runnin' sweep where you clothesline them, & drop them ova your leg is pretty OP. Some remind me of Sanda. You obviously have no problem with sweepin' the leg, beast mode, Jeff. Good shit, bro.
Not sure if you already have, but I think it would be interesting if you made a video on how to use that lead foot to lead foot sweep when you're in closed stance, just the little pseudo inside calf kick type deal that off-balances the opponent. How to time it, where to aim for the off balancing effect. Nice vid!
Idk why but I find foot sweeps so hilarious. A guy comes charging in at you, trying to punch your head off, and then you just go like *boop* and he falls over.
What is that hip throw where you dash up to them, then throw them with your hip? It's beautiful! :D you're such a master at that hip throw! I'd love to see a breakdown of it so I can master it too!!! ^_^ thank you for making this video Jeff!! You're the best!!
That low ankle sweep is fire🔥 I had a Amateur Thai fight and they said that we couldn’t sweep behind the leg, is that just a safety precaution for Ammy or is it universal??
That stepping sweep is similar to what’s taught in karate, you can sneak in a stepping punch or straight punch as you’re stepping in to the step, pull their arm closest arm to you away from their chest as they’re falling and hammer fist
I really admire your work and I see that you travel a lot if you ever come to Pensacola I would love to I have a lot of experience in a lot of control so I would not take it to far
3:36 i always try to do this, but it never works for me 😂. I need a tutorial for that one and the one where you run up on them just like here 3:06. Awsome video btw
The gym I go to we really don’t do sweeps at all or not much but one question is do u always have to life the leg up to make them bounce or can u just grab the leg and go for the sweep?
When you go for a sweep(not in a clinch circumstance), do you generally aim for their calf, ankle or foot? I've been trying to using my instep onto their ankle but isn't finding much success.
hey man, I think I a video breaking down the most common if not all muay thai sweeps would be great - the format could be similar to your favourite combos you use in sparring. Cheers
Jeff Chan is a Muay Thai specialist and he's doing it for a very long time so it's easy for him to do that sweep. But for us we need more training to execute that sweeps. But anyway nice video. I hope you can also give a commentary about your experience in Ultimate Self Defense Championship and your sparring with Ramsey Dewey. Thanks
Excellent content as always Jeff. It might seem basic, but I still struggle with instinctively incorporating sweeps after I catch a round kick or trap a teep. I have this moment of "Wow. I got it!" and in the split second of trying to pull of a sweep, my opponent has either escaped or started punching me in the face! Any drills to make these techniques a little more "natural" or automatic would be awesome. I also have difficulty dumping from the clinch. I can defend ok, but I get lost when I try to exploit my partner's off balance positions. It feels like I'm working harder than I need to be. Thanks!
I can def work on making a clinch sweep / dump video! as for catching kicks, it depends on how skilled your opponent is at retracting their leg. But try catching with two hands, it makes things a lot tighter and harder to get out of!
How about how to fall safely if you're getting swept hard. To this day the hardest hit I've ever taken sparring was getting swept and landing on my back such that my own knee came down and hit me hard on the cheekbone.
That iconic sweep where you come in and sweep the person over your leg with your arm is great. Need the tutorial
Yes, that step-in hip sweep @0:10 is something I would love to pick apart and become more skilled at, definitely
It's a very common throw in Capoeira, I don't know the name but you can probably find breakdowns of it.

I'm starting to pull out the hip bump (thanks to you) consistently in sparring. Now I have to pull it out in a real fight ^^
sweet!!!
The outside leg sweep to the lead leg looks so effortless. Awesome timing.
love that one!

I ask for a sweep tutorial the other day and here it is. This is why this is one of the best pages on TH-cam thanks Jeff.
ill be making a more detailed breakdown/tutorial soon!!

a tutorial on the lowkey seamless kinda sweeps would be best. like the one in 0:22 those are the hardest to get because of timing I think @2:23
