Still impressive over 40 years on. Iconic scene.
Best pilot in the sequels: Poe after setting the Falcon on fire.
Best pilot in the OT: Literally outmaneuvers space rocks without scratching the Falcon!
Still one of the greatest scenes in the entire franchise. The combination of action, effects, editing, pacing, dialogue and THAT score is just a magic moment when they all combine so perfectly.
The best scene and the best piece of music in the entire saga. This is the hill I will die on.
I would argue that this scene has some of the finest cinematic story telling committed to film of all time. Location, players, stakes and motivations are very clearly presented and seamlessly shifted to keep the tension high until the last moment when the Falcon can get some temporary respite. That said I personally think the carbonite scene is better in terms of scene and music transition. But then again the freezing scene has the benefit of building on the journey we've seen Leia and Han go on. Basically ESB is absolutely fantastic.
The tools dropping on Han's head gets me every time.
@Ethan Schultz @Ethan Schultz When Han climbs back up. Like nothing happened.
When he says he can still outmaneuver them and the Falcon dives still gives me chills!
Such a great scene!
Yes! It's like the point in a roller coaster ride right after it climbs the peak then you suddenly plummet down.
@@toshtao1 Maybe in "A galaxy far far away" asteroids are like that.
I remember seeing this scene for the first time in the theater. I was awestruck for years...
For me, this is still the greatest ever combination of score, visual effects, shots, editing and pacing in a movie....... Still as exhilarating as when I first watched it in 1980! All the new technology and cgi in the world doesn`t make for better drama.
@@WisamSafi1978 Yes……three times. The Gaumont cinema had the second largest screen in the country, as well.
@@charmawow I hope you got to see Avatar 1 and 2 iMax 3D as well. For me I ensured my whole family saw it :)
Still one of the great sequences in film history. All departments excelling at their jobs.
Also 'The Raiders Of The Lost Ark' map room sequence they had a great crew of people back then some scenes are timeless
@@daguroswaldson257it went down much before, with “Now that’s is pod racing!” and “sand”
@@daguroswaldson257I know (March 6th,2024 and April 3rd,2024/🙂).
Han's piloting skills remind me of how much confidence I had in my parents as a kid. They did not disappoint.
Solo is a BAD ASS PILOT!!!
This is the best star wars movie ever hands down !!!
The Harrison Ford voiceover for the preview at the end is.....precious.
2:10 such a perfect piece of music. Would pay anything to see this in the cinema
Sometimes they have Star Wars showings with a live orchestra. Now thats something I’ve got to see
My theater did a throwback and showed this movie on their big Dolby atmos system. It was epic.
Check your local Symphony. A lot of them play the score to movies and John Williams movies are always in demand. Good luck.
The fact this sequence is as good or better than than similar scenes today shows how good ESB made it.
This movie literally has no flaws :)
It's got one - when the Falcon goes sideways and the two TIE fighters explode, as they go through the gap, the composite of the "trench" and the "main area with the giant hole" are not aligned - the asteroid suddenly starts flying sideways at several hundred meters a second for no reason. It is at 03:11.
There’s a few flaws, but every movie has flaws. This movie is definitely the best one in the OT, and probably the best one in the saga. It’s very hard to beat it, especially when every movie is trying to replicate what Empire Strikes Back introduced.
In some shots of the lightsaber duel you can actually see the stick blades without any of the animation on them. They're very blinking message, but nevertheless it's there.
It’s remarkable to me that they did all this using models. The screenplay, pacing, music.
Simply phenomenal work.
The best effects in the movie.
I can't get over how good the shots of the Falcon spinning around and flying are.
(Toolbox hits Han in the head)
Han: OW! Chewie!
The special effects in this film still hold up over forty-two years later.
2:07. The most thrilling cue in the history of film music. I'll never tire of it.
This is one of my favorite parts of this movie. I love how Han handles the millennium falcon, and flips and turns through the other ships to get away from the empire.
This is how you do a space chase. There’s tension, worldbuilding, the characters are driving the plot through their actions and reactions to one another, and every aspect of the presentation is working in concert to deliver this masterpiece of a story beat.
This is movie magic.
The Best Star WARS movie, no doubt..........wonderful
(2:16) Blink and you'll miss it: the TIE fighter pilot tumbling out when he hits the asteroid. Brutal. 🤪
Shussshhhh!!!! You're giving them an idea for a 50 part spin-off series about what happened to the pilot.
Nooooooo!
@Will Peony That was Crum T'umblar, and boy, oh, boy, was his day about to get much much worse. 😉
Everything about this segment is everything we always wanted again and never got. Everything.
The way how Solo does that badass dive between three Star Destroyers about to collide with each other, then all that spinning to avoid blaster fire, finishing with the sideways pass and the spectacular dive into the hole, he's definitely the gutsiest scoundrel and pilot in the galaxy.
Aside from the battle on Hoth, this was my favorite scene from Empire.
Thinking about it this scene was ambitious as hell for what they had to work with at the time
The sound of the light speed conking out is perfect it's hilarious a great sound effect.
This is probably my favorite scene in Empire. The music and cinematography are just so damn beautiful!
Such impressive visual effects shots in this entire sequence. Whenever the Millennium Falcon twists, turns and dives, you really feel like you’re twisting, turning and diving with it. Why this film was snubbed for Best Cinematography at the 53rd Academy Awards is definitely beyond me!
Harrison Ford's irritation and frustration in all his movies is classic. "SHUT HIM UP OR SHUT HIM DOWN!!!!" lol
Or them running to the Falcon through the Hoth base; "Hurry up, goldenrod, or you're gonna be a permanent resident!" :)
This scene was mind blowing to watch in the theater in 1980 as a 13 year old. It’s still exciting nearly 45 years later.
I finally got to see this in a movie theater for the first time last saturday, and it almost made me cry how amazing it was compared to just watching it on a TV.
Wait how did you manage to see this in a movie theater one year ago?
@@albertoquinones1173 One of my local Marquee Cinema theaters do throwback sundays and play 3 different older movies (usually 1980s and older) each sunday. They happened to have this one playing one time so I went to see it on the big screen with Dolby Atmos sound
What a masterpiece this movie is...in the truest sense of the world! ❤❤❤
Han: Watch this.
(Nothing)
Leia: Watch what?
Han: I think we’re in trouble.
3PO: If I say so sir, I noticed earlier that the hyperdrive motivator is damaged. It’s impossible to go into lightspeed.
Han: We’re in trouble.
2:16 Original Alderaan explosion, but inverted and with the appropriate framerate.
I love this piece of music! And to see it with all those wonderful visuals.
The Empire Strikes Back teaser/sneak peak from 1979 was outstanding as well.
2:28 I love Han’s face here. It’s like he can’t believe what he’s doing but at the same time he is completely in the zone. This is the best sequence in the original trilogy, the effects and music are all time.
Seeing those 3 destroyers top down gives me chills
From the very first time I saw this when I was a little boy, all the way up until now (30 years later), this scene will always, always, ALWAYS bring me joy
Vader: Yes Admiral, what is it?
Piett: We just spotted the Millennium Falcon, my lord. But they went into an asteroid field. We can not risk-
Vader: Asteroids do not concern me, Admiral. I want that ship, not excuses.
Piett: Yes my lord.
Best scene of every single Star wars movie this is number one and always will be in my book
THATS STAR WARS!!!! can we get back to THAT?!?!?
Very few people realise or know Harrison Ford was actually a Carpenter on A New Hope- the actor meant to play Solo pulled out as it was seen as a risky enterprise so Lucas grabbed Harrison gave him a brief screen test and cast him there and then. My Uncle now dead worked for Dolby and in 1977 just 4 and a bit years old he took me to London to a private screening of A New Hope- And held my hand through the sad bits and fast bits! ❤️
One of the best chasing scenes in movie history.
Ahh to be a kid, seeing this on a giant screen with your friends.
I saw the trailer in 1979 and the asteroid chase was the big teaser reel they used on all the talk shows before the movie opened. I had been waiting since 1977 and boy was I ready for a new movie. It didn't let me down in the slightest!
I always loved this scene. Never tell Han the odds
A Pilot Finds A Way To Escape
1:54 - "They'd be crazy to follow us, wouldn't they?" I was watching Empire Strikes Back with my girlfriend a few weeks ago, and when Han Solo said that line, she said "I'm pretty sure that one line influenced your personality a lot!"
Dawg this is Han’s climax theme. He’s out there flying his Dad’s dream ship through a wicked asteroid field to save a hot princess from an evil space military. Metal af
@@officialthomasjames yeah if I remember correctly there’s a line in solo where Han said something like how is dad used to work in a factory producing the falcon’s model and always wanted one but could never afford one
Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One are my two favorites.
the only star wars movie that matters
Looking back on a scene like this years later, the exterior shots hold up significantly better than the interior in terms of effects. Great film.
The original trilogy is definitely one of the most memorable times in cinema history. Their quality, writing, art direction, characters, and music are so unbeaten (especially the first two) 🔥
"Never tell me the odds!"
Imagine if someone had this same attitude toward drunk driving...
Musical masterpiece! That is all!
"IT'S AN EPIC OF ROMANCE" *Leia elbows Han Solo in the gut*
wow, is that actually ford doing the cheesy voiceover promotion at the end
amazing and hilarious
Some of the greatest music ever married to celluloid. When was the last time you saw a movie that had a memorable theme?
Fun Fact/ the asteroids are actually just spray painted potato’s
Are you hearing? This is the best Star Wasr vid of ALL TIME! Chefelf Rules!
Some of the best music during this scene. Epic!
"You don't have to do this to impress me!" Childish but lovely...
The Star Wars Trilogy music written by John Williams is absolutely brilliant and the most theme driven music since Peter and the Wolf. Imagine what this and other Star Wars scenes would be like without John Williams music? It’s why I bought the complete special edition soundtracks because they were just that good.
Everytime i watch this scene i felt like if i am waching, Indiana Jones???❤❤❤😂😂😂😮😮😅😅😅😅😅❤
Said it before....the most awesome scene in all of the original films....not a Jedi or force user......just the best regular person pilot.....still sends chills up my back.....fly that mf Solo
Man, trailers have come a long way.
Now, I can see why the tie fighters pilots follow Han, Leia, Chewie and 3po in the falcon in the asteroid field they don't want suffer Lord Vader's warth for losing them because on the other part of this Lord Vader can't care less about the tie fighters pilots and the star destroyers going in the asteroid field and plus asteroids doesn't concern him he wanted that falcon ship alive and not any excuses.
Ahhhh....when Star Wars was Star Wars
When l was younger this was my least favorite in the series. When l got older I realize this episode was a g.d. masterpiece
1:43 Putting that sound effect on the stereo love that
I prefer these old special effects to the new ones!
“I don’t know how we’re gonna get out of this one.”
Considering how much trouble Han and Chewie always get themselves into, this line is absolutely hilarious.
I bought the Ost to this movie just to listen to this orchestral masterpiece, a long time ago in a galaxy far away.
Dear God, the 80s didn’t know how good they had it!
Anyone else quote "Never tell me the odds"
When the first TIE fight hits an astroid you can see the pilot fly out towards the bottom left of the screen
Millennium Falcon entering Asteroid field
"Never tell me the odds!”
I just love how he went full speed in insane 105 traffic and parked that muthafucka perfectly. That's how I am on my electric bike. lmao
My absolute all time favourite moment in all of Star Wars.
I remember that promo, jesus i'm getting old. lol
Lol i wish the falcon was that maneuverable on battlefront
It almost sounds like Mark Hamill doing the voice over on that promo in a few spots.
“You don’t have to do this to impress me” oh I miss Carrie
This scene is so fucking awesome
1:28 you’re welcome. XD
Seeing this in theaters back in the day, everyone went nuts, especially at the end of this scene!!! So iconic!!!
😃😃😃
What a legendary scene
Happy belated birthday, Jim Hopper!
After playing VR mode in SW Squadrons, you realize how bad the field of view in a tie fighter is. Dudes didn't stand a chance
Movie magic: when you commit to making something you have no idea how to execute! They wanted to push the effects from the last film and this scene says it all! That pan shot of the falcon across the asteroid surface followed by the tiebfighters is flawless! And of course John Williams!
The theme to this scene actually makes you feel like you are in the falcon going along with the crew. The way John Williams created this masterpiece is beyond amazing 😍
Most people agree that this is the best Star Wars film, John Williams deserves a lot of that credit. I wanted to point to this and the march as his greatest before forgetting all his other work. Wow he made movies epic.
I agree
@edthacow Yeah he did , the Star Wars Trilogy, Jaws to name a couple...
Agree the script is better but No movie will give me that feeling ‘77 did at age 7
Yeah in an absolutely all-time great score, this piece still stands out for its quality and how much it enhances the scene. It's an enormously creative, unique piece that captures both the chaos of the asteroid field and the epic pursuit perfectly.
