    This was a great video! I'm building my first container home in the Colorado Rockies this summer. Question, I see you nailed your 2x4 sub framing through the container wall. I've heard that it's better to weld angles to attach the wood subframing to so you don't compromise the metal envelope and keep water out. Do you have any issues with water leakage by nailing the wood directly to the container as you did?

  • @wyattavtech
    @wyattavtech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    There are 3 issues you should consider about this approach.
    1. The home depot vendor says plainly not to apply cedar planks on top of plastic or foam products. They spec tar paper or construction paper. You have no warranty on the cedar lap siding. you're gonna get black mold in between the siding and the foam.
    2. R-Tech products usually have 1 side with an aluminum finish which provides a radiant barrier that should be facing the exterior. You won't achieve your R-value installing it with the white side out. Additionally the seams should be taped with aluminum duct tape which completes a vapor barrier; radiant barrier and thermal transmission barrier.
    3. if you run 1 x 2 furring strips (3/4" thick) on the outside of the foam board you will almost double the r-value by creating a thermal break it will allow the cedar lap to dry due to the passive ventilation. This works with almost any siding it is acceptable to apply western red cedar directly to wood.

I planned on doing this on the INSIDE of the 2 x 4 framed walls in the interior, but you said NO NO NO to the fiberglass. What is the flaw on my design if the insulation board facing the shipping container wall is completely sealed by foam? Thank you for making these - I learn something in every video you make.

    • @ContainingLuxury

      Alan Torrance it’s a huge steel post and ours is sitting in the shade due to the roof so it doesn’t get hot, the stay cool product we sprayed on the container earlier literally keeps the siding cool so we were just showing the basics of how to fasten the insulation. On ours we actually are not going to install insulation under the siding at all but depending on a lot of factors you may or may not need to insulate that post on the exterior if you didn’t on the interior
