  • Miniaturist Journal 41. I took a three-day class with Jens Torp making a silver cover for a leather book made by Tine Krijnen. The class took place at the beautiful home of my friend Trees Beertema. Classes at her place are always wonderful! We learned many techniques for creating this piece. I loved how everyone made a cover with their own design, making them all very personal pieces.
    Miniaturist Journal is a record of my activities, experiences, thoughts and observations in vlog form, all relating to miniatures.

    I just died and went to minature Heaven! I would love to hear about your history of working with tools, your father teaching you to saw. Maybe in one of your videos? Would love to hear about how you learned such amazing skills. Absolutely 💯 perfection. That silver book is amazing. I wish I could be your apprentice. Atleast we have your vlogs. Very grateful for you.

      Haha, thank you! Well, the remark about letting the saw do the work came from my friend next to me, but my father said the same thing to me. I'll talk about that in one of my vlogs. But I learned so much (if not most) about this type of fine work from the master Jens Torp. He of course has a wealth of knowledge and is a great teacher.

    I think that classes such as these, assist in carrying the torch of their discipline, to those who'll perhaps one day, be able to play it forward too.
    I particularly LOVE your design as it reminds me of the Arts and Crafts flower and leaf motifs such in the entrance hall of your Canal House.

      Thank you, Elizabeth. Well said! I hope people get some enjoyment and perhaps learn a little something from my videos.
      You're right about the Arts&Crafts inspiration. At first, I wanted to do a more complicated William Morris-style design but didn't have enough time to work on getting a design fit for making in silver. So my design was simpler but still in the same vein.

    Well I wanted to see the riveting! Cuz it’s in such a teeny spot I can’t think how you did it.
    Really this is so precise and so much work you put in. Really amazing I’m in awe.

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! It was a tight spot to do the riveting and I couldn't go all the way round with the hammer as that just didn't fit, but enough to hold it in place. Then finish it with a beading tool and it becomes nice and round on top. A beautiful rivet! I learned this all from Jens Torp of course!

    Hi Josje,
    What an interesting video. I had no idea of the steps that would be taken to create the cover. Bruce watched with me as he was very interested as well. It is another treasure to add to the many you have created. Lovely views of the countryside also, thank you. Janine

    I am always so excited when you post a new video! Just a couple of observations…if you don’t own a foredoom you can use a temp control regulator sold for soldering irons which reduces the flow of current and will let your Dremel run slower. I’ve made some for my classroom but they are commercially available and I believe will work fine with a single speed dremel. Also, if you score the lines you want to engrave lightly by pulling towards you you have much more control. Then, let the tool do the work. You will have less hand fatigue. As well, be careful when you have a graver and your finger is in its path. Ouch. To hold you metal…I might try double sided tape. In jewellers school I was taught to take a dowel and attach it to a piece of wood. Next you melt pitch or shellac and put the piece you are working on onto it. The dowel will rotate nicely on your bench pin. However, your book cover is exquisite and you did it in a perfect to you way.

    • @gailenepowell6613
      @gailenepowell6613 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Meant to say, after pulling the line lightly to create the slightest groove; then you use the graver in the usual way by pushing away.

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea Gailene! Thank you. I will look for one of those. No doubt it will be a much cheaper option than a Foredom motor.
      I will also try scoring the lines first next time. Jens did mention it but I forgot.
      And yes I noticed on the video my fingers were in the path of the graver. Not a good example. I know better than to do that. I used double-sided tape when I worked on my previous piece (which still isn't finished after, what, 5 years...) As for the melted pitch or shellac, I have seen it on videos, but it is a material I don't have so again would have to buy it. I rarely make anything in silver at home, mostly in class about once a year if I'm lucky. Of course with Covid the last class was 4 years ago I believe. I would like to start trying to make things myself at home because I really o enjoy it and have accumulated all the basic tools over the years.
      Thank you very much for the tips! Much appreciated. Are you an art teacher?

    • @gailenepowell6613
      @gailenepowell6613 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are correct. However, I am taking a break to build my house. In Canada we can apply to do our own electrical, which is inspected, of course, and I am doing all of the electrical, some plumbing, insulating, painting, trim and flooring. When I’m done, I will sub occasionally and pursue my art mostly full time!

    • @gailenepowell6613
      @gailenepowell6613 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will have over 800 square feet to create whatever artistic creation that I fancy. If you are ever in the pacific coast of Canada come by and play in my studio.

      I think you are referring to the bench pin? I don't think the ones with the stand are sold in shops. These were home-made by...? Could be Jens Torp or Bill Robertson or...I can't remember. You know what, these are good to have and not hard to make. I'll show you how to make one in next week's video. Okay? 👍😃
