  • From the BBC foreign affairs documentary strand Assignment.
    Come Home, America.
    Christopher Hitchens covers the developments in a campaign fraught for all sides, interviews the key players and develops a commentary that probably is more relevant today than in 1992 - though if he were still alive would he be making the same points?
    Willie Horton, Anita Hill, Bush throwing up on the Japanese PM's shoes...it's all here, along with the new generation of feminists shaking up congress like ..er... Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer.
    "In the American presidential election campaign, the once odds-on favourite George Bush is fighting for survival while his principal challenger Bill Clinton is hounded by scandal. Gulf War euphoria has turned into despair over the Los Angeles riots, and the ailing economy is not responding to strong medicine. Christopher Hitchens examines democracy in America. Producer Elaine Bedell Editor John Morrison"
    First broadcast Tue 3rd Nov 1992, 19:45 on BBC Two England

    39:45 is pretty creepy how James’s presentation totally switches from faux-friendly to aggressive

    The USA literally hasn't really changed in 30 years. It's like being stuck in a time loop.

      well the divide between the rich and the poor has gotten worse,
      private interests have more power.
      but yeah same trend I guess.

      That's a fucking stupid thing to say man, and you damn well know it.
      There's a terrible irony in what you say as well, given someone in every decade for what rapidly approaches a century has been fatuous enough to say something exactly as stagnant and pitiful.

    Just 2 mins in and have to say really looking forward to this documentary. New to Hitchens. Bill Clinton is my favourite president of my time and love any insight into the great man

      @@thekidd7 Upon reflection of not just this documentary, but studying additional work by Hitchens..I’ve decided Bill Clinton, Mother Theresa, Jesus, Mohammed and Henry Kissinger aren’t the people I once thought they were.
      Revelations regarding Jesus and Henry Kissinger were my biggest disappointments.
      They say never meet your idols, I say never read anything Hitchens writes about them!!😔
