@@ChillAssTurtle They’re right. Why doesn’t that crowd say that to circumcision. Oh wait they’re a bunch of h and o and e words and think one that is cut looks better
Very appropriate, yes... as applied to Hitchens, who bemoaned the loss of a bit of skin and supported the slaughter of many thousands in Iraq. Yes, let's talk about expiation, Christopher.
And The Jewish people, Muslims, and anyone with a sensible mind, will continue engaging in circumcision anyways. No matter how persuasive the argument is on the other side.
I was hospitalised many decades ago. Across the ward opposite my post-op bed was a small boy. He screamed and screamed day and night off and on. One night his parents attended his bedside, along with a number of nursing staff and a doctor. The parents stood back in the semi-darkened ward. They left and the curtain was pulled around the bed. Very late at night the boy was removed from the ward. There was no more screaming. A very distressed nurse the following day informed me the boy had died and that it was a circumcision gone wrong. The boy was four years old, she said. That memory burned itself into my mind and has never left me. My brother and I were circumcised early in our infancy and we have both had problems throughout our lives. Both of us were circumcised for religious reasons. I despised both of my parents for what they had done to us - for their God.
Ultimately whether it's painful or not doesn't matter, mutilating another human being's body without their consent is repugnant and should not be done.

The "circumcision for hygiene" argument is like having a surgical procedure to entirely remove all of your fingernails so that you don't get them dirty instead of cleaning underneath the nail and trimming them since they grow continuously.
in some regions of the world there are hygiene issues, due to of a lack of water. That's where this tradition comes from. And even though most men in these countries are circumcized, they have higher rates of infections of their penis today than developed countries with easy access to hygiene. The Jews originated from a desert 6000 years ago. It's necessity depends on where you live

@jeff Citation needed!! I'm calling bullshit on your comment. Also, your religious bias is clear as day. You are a religious fanatic no doubt, and as such you have no qualms lying to protect your faith. Feckbucket!
That's actually not the point. The point is rather hidden. Judaism uses circumcision as an innovation - it is used as a substitution for child sacrifices. Then, it becomes a way to keep the community united and unique. So the problem is not in what it does initially, that's fine. The problem is why it continues doing it.

Christopher Hitchens gave the perfect response to the rabbi's anecdote. Contrary to popular believe and aap lies, there are more complications in neonatal circumcision, than in those of adults. More than a hundred neonates actually die each year in US hospitals from this malpractice alone. And why are Hiv rates higher in MGM US, than in intact Europe? Why have been no increase in Australian rates, when they stopped slicing? Why same pattern for penile cancer and UTI's? Lemme answer - cuz Murican doctors/ObGyns/paediatricians③ lie! There are no benefits to arbitrary amputation of any bodypart without *explicit medical indication,* which in practice means never. UTI's with both boys and girls are easily treated with antibiotics. ③Medical personnel, which encourage parents to prematurely retract the pubic prepuce of boys, who are kept intact, are still commonly encountered. Once prematurely retracted, infection occurs and they once again make a case for foreskin amputation, which parents at that point will have a very hard time resistanting due to the inflicted complications, because they are not told, that antibiotics is also an option. Let's give thanks to the single mothers and parents who understand the benefits of male circumcision and that the child will appreciate those benefits throughout their life. Parents who have taken the time to educate themselves on circumcision have found it to: Decreases the risk of urinary tract infections in infancy. Decreases the risk of penile cancer. Decreases risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including female-to-male transmission of HIV. Decreases the risk of cervical cancer and some infections in female partners. Prevents balanitis, balanoposthitis, paraphimosis, and phimosis. Makes it easier to maintain good genital hygiene. Makes it easier in nursing care when old. Decrease in health coverage cost
Several surveys and studies have shown that in addition to the substantial health benefits of male circumcision, there are also sexual benefits including a greater physical appeal to women. In a survey where women were asked to rate their preferences when it came to different forms of sexual activity, a substantial majority of women overwhelmingly preferred men who were circumcised; for intercourse, 71 percent preferred circumcised men while only 6 percent said they preferred uncircumcised men; for fellatio, 82 percent said they preferred a circumcised penis while 2 percent said they preferred an uncircumcised partner; and for manual stimulation, 75 percent favored circumcised partners compared with 5 percent who reported a preference for uncircumcised men. In addition, 76 percent said circumcised penises were more attractive while only 4 percent said they preferred the look of an uncircumcised penis; a whopping 90 percent said the circumcised penis looked “sexier;” 85 percent said it felt nicer to the touch; and 92 percent said they felt it was cleaner. Even women who had never had a circumcised partner said they preferred the way a circumcised penis looks. An Australian study found that women whose partners were circumcised were much more likely to have orgasms, as well as more likely to have simultaneous orgasms.

I would have loved to have seen Christopher get down to the essential point, here; that of just why the rabbi thinks circumcision is necessary, at all: what I call the, "Becuz Gawd TOLD us to do so, that's why" point. Religionists will "word-dance" for days to avoid this, as it then forces them to defend just why their religion (like all others) believes that it alone carries the "one and true" message from God. It is only after this point is admitted to that one can go on to judge whether more good or more evil is the result of the religion's tenets, each religion differing and being judged by itself in turn. In terms of jews being different, i can answer in 2 ways. One which would only speak to the neutral enquirer, which then i would answer that it is to do with the nature of the soul of the jew, which there is a fundamental difference, which i suppose you could see manifested in the way that a jew has no problem connecting with a transcendant being (God) without the need to picture Him in a physical or pseudo-physical way (even chrisitians who are supposedly monotheistic have to add the "physical" jesus element in for example) For the questioner who is aggressive and challenges the assumption of this type of knowledge, and limits himself to only demonstratable empirical evidence, then there are 2 approached. 1. through looking at how unique the history of the jews are (of course on a fundamental level) and the uniqueness of the jewish religion, which is connected with this. and for this those 2 lectures should be more than enough for the objective thinker. 2. by the empirical evidence of the truth of the jewish tradition (which you can get also from the second of the 2 lectures above) and then naturally anything in the jewish tradion would also necessarily be true, which includes the uniueness of the jewish soul, (and body according to some, but that is a different discussion and much harder)

Ummer Farooq Arabic is a semitic language and has trilateral or four letter root words. S l m (س ل م) is the root word in question. This root word means to be safe, sound, unharmed, blameless, certain. (From Hans Weir dictionary). Every additional letter has an additional meaning a connotation. Adding an “alif” puts it on the scale aslama (أ س ل م) which means, to hand over, to deliver up, surrender, to commit oneself, to resign...(Hand Weir dictionary) now adding the m (م) makes it an active participle. The doer of the verb. So a Muslim (مسلم) is someone who will find peace during submission to ALLAH. If you disagree with this dictionary, I also have Arabic only dictionaries like Almuhit, lessan-alarab, etc... these dictionaries are a proof and evidence. So bring your proof please.

OomYaaqub B You misstated their name - it's the American Academy of Pediatrics...and they do NOT recommend circumcision. Read their policy - they assert some benefits, but stop short of a "recommendation." Several pediatrician groups from non-cutting cultures (e.g. Royal Dutch Medical Society) discourage infant male genital cutting.
Wow, so epic... he condemns circumcision, equates it with the cutting of the clit, (in order words he is using some low level generalizations), and then he goes and commits TOBBACO MUTILATION. That is epic to you?

I worked in a well known Women's hospital where circumcisions were performed several times a day. I would always know when it was going on, just from the primal, blood-curdling screams. The poor boys would be strapped to a 'circumstraint'- it's a thing, look it up! The parents were never present, the babies were taken away for "the procedure." The most revolting thing was going into the rooms shortly after 'the procedure.' The baby boys would be passed out from the trauma, and the mom would coo about how brave the little guy was. I switched hospitals after a year at that place. I hope parents wise up, or at the very least, I hope pain relief is provided for infants unfortunate to go through this...

Foreskin actually serves a purpose, it isn't like those clear plastic sheets you find on mobile phones that are removed when you first buy them. So ridiculous that people defend circumcision (or in the Rabbis case, as usual, brush it off as 'well, it's not that bad'), and honestly one would have thought the normally open-minded branch of the Abrahamic religions, Judaism, would've decided to get rid of it by now.
A few Jews choose not to circumcise, but the vast majority hold onto it as a central rite of Judaism. Even non-religious Jews will usually circumcise their sons out of tradition.

Having just finished “Letters To A Young Contrarian”, I am more ecstatic whenever I see Hitchens confront an issue he sees to be pertinent no matter how unpopular his side is. Many people will cower and bow to the consensus or stay silent in the face of it, but Hitchens would never and the world is better for it. Many people promote “negative peace”, but Hitchens was one of the few to promote “positive peace”. “Don’t take refuge in the false security of consensus and the feeling that whatever you think, you’re bound to be OK because you’re in the safely moral majority.” “Never be a spectator to unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence.” “Do not armour yourself in the safety of consensus - consensus may change and you may find yourself naked.”

Countless children and infants have actually died as a direct result of a botched circumcision. Every single person laughing about genital mutilation is a reprehensible human being period.
That rabbi is a moral midget.

Actually I was circumcised and I didn't even know it until grade one..... but I only mentioned this because I know some men who have had problems and later in Life have had to have Circumcision and if it traumatizing I don't remember but I apologize for my comments if some young boys have been Traumatized, SORRY!
@@davidelliott1123 Just because you don't remember or doesn't feel anything during the circumcision because of anesthesia or too young to remember, it doesn't change the fact that circumcision are child abuse and wrong because the act itself was committed on minors who can't consent for their own bodies. Plus, most of the time children are unable to completely understand that they will have a part remove by a sharp knife from their most sensitive region on their body and WILL undoubtedly experience the excruciating pain that comes with it.
Even if they did, they will be just like you only realizing about it when you're old enough to understand what circumcision is. And for many children around world, this also mean stealing our rights to make choices for our own body when we are fully grown up; just like the men who have problems later in life like you mentioned in your comment and need to have circumcision. I can't see how this is relevant since they are now "men", which means they CAN consent, understand what they will be going through and obviously already have a proven medical needs for it.

①Synechia is the same type of tissue, that fuses your nails to your fingers and toes.
②Mucuosa is the same type of skin, which covers inner eyelids and inside of mouth.
Children don't have sex, so it's not relevant for neither girls, nor boys to be involuntarily subjected to preemptive, *irreversible* cosmetic genital reduction surgery without urgent medical indication. Adults can make their own choices about their own bodies, when they come of age. Her body, her rights - His body, his rights.
Myths of hygiene and penile diseases are still perpetuated in these areas.

@@srbaruchi, your right. That'll be thousands within the resent century. And the farther back we go back in time, the higher the death rates probably were.
One also has to take into consideration, that the cause of thise deaths are usually reported as other reasons, like hemorrhage, when children bleed to death, even though bleedings were inflicted surgery on genitalia, or by the wound surgery left behind. Thus it is evident to honest folks, that that the real cause of death is a result of the foreskin amputating procedure, without which the children have suffered, let alone died.

I remember learning as a child that boys in America get the ends of their genitalia’s cut and was utterly horrified. Then I grew a little and was told it was normal there, quelling my disgust. Then I grew even more and learning about it further; realised the kid me had it absolutely right.
Let's give thanks to the single mothers and parents who understand the benefits of male circumcision and that the child will appreciate those benefits throughout their life. Parents who have taken the time to educate themselves on circumcision have found it to:
Decreases the risk of urinary tract infections in infancy.

For the questioner who is aggressive and challenges the assumption of this type of knowledge, and limits himself to only demonstratable empirical evidence, then there are 2 approached. 1. through looking at how unique the history of the jews are (of course on a fundamental level) and the uniqueness of the jewish religion, which is connected with this. and for this those 2 lectures should be more than enough for the objective thinker. 2. by the empirical evidence of the truth of the jewish tradition (which you can get also from the second of the 2 lectures above) and then naturally anything in the jewish tradion would also necessarily be true, which includes the uniueness of the jewish soul, (and body according to some, but that is a different discussion and much harder)

The rabbi attempts to defend forced genital cutting at 4:20, followed by Hitchens' fantastic rebuttal. Watch to the end of the clip, where Hitch says his famous quote: "Genital mutilation is no joke."
The American Pediatric Association now recommends male circumcision for health reasons.
OomYaaqub B

Where do you people get this crap from?!
Wow, so epic... he condemns circumcision, equates it with the cutting of the clit, (in order words he is using some low level generalizations), and then he goes and commits TOBBACO MUTILATION. That is epic to you?
OomYaaqub B whoever recommends circumcision are either idiots or evil no matter what their credentials are.
You can see that Hitchens can’t even bear to look this rabbi in the eye. I think he’s shocked to his core by the nonchalant way the rabbi answered this question

Anthony Roberts Learn the difference they are not complicated to comprehend. Definition of mutilation
1 : an act or instance of destroying, removing, or severely damaging a limb or other body part of a person or animal. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin from the human penis. In the procedure, the foreskin is opened, adhesions are removed, and the foreskin is separated from the glans.

Let's give thanks to the single mothers and parents who understand the benefits of male circumcision and that the child will appreciate those benefits throughout their life. Parents who have taken the time to educate themselves on circumcision have found it to:
Decreases the risk of urinary tract infections in infancy.

You can tell a lot about a person and what they believe when they genuinely think genital mutilation is funny in any way.
You're missing the point the Rabbi is making. It's not genital mutilation for a Jew. Rather it is a completion in removing an extra part of the body. A Jewish male who is not circumcised is a defective person. He used humor instead of what he really should have done. What I would have done. Many people promote “negative peace”, but Hitchens was one of the few to promote “positive peace”.
“Don’t take refuge in the false security of consensus and the feeling that whatever you think, you’re bound to be OK because you’re in the safely moral majority.”
“Never be a spectator to unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence.”
