    This exact thing happened in (I believe) 1988 at Portland when I was working for Nissan in the GTP series and we were just passing the leader when a “honorary starter” threw a checkered flag one lap earlier than the schedule distance but everyone continued on racing to the scheduled distance and it looked like we had won because the official starter threw the flag again but IMSA said the first checker ended the race! Because we were in second at that time we ended up second!

    • @jacekatalakis8316
      @jacekatalakis8316 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's the exact situation. A year later ESPN did a recap, to add to what you said, it went through the appeals process and Jag's win was upheld because of the very same rule. In a bit of gallows humor, as Bob Varsha I believe it was, described it, they had a plan to give everyone mock checkered flags and have them waved at some point during the racee.
      Good on IMSA for admitting their mistake as well in this instance, it's amusing to me it happened both times with the GTP cars in the fieldBo

    They really need to try the slow zones and Code 60/virtual safety cars. It was a caution-fest for a long point and the caution protocols are too long as well. And, the commentary team for NBC was a bunch of NASCAR commentators who stated they know nothing about sports cars or the IMSA rule set... Why are they there then? Get the IMSA team and the IndyCar team to do the commentary. All the IndyCar people have had sports car experience. It was a bad look for NBC...

    I have a question. This was my first race and while im understanding the sport more Im wondering..
    Why during 90% the coverage of the race were they only focusing on the GTP class and not the other 3 classes? For a race with 4 classes I assumed they would focus equally on all 4. Is this normal?

    • @hypezzyy
      @hypezzyy 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's because teams and manufacturers are pushing these hybtid systems to the absolute limit. They did that at the 24H of Le Mans last year. It's new technology and they wanna see how far it can go. They actually did show a large proportion of the GT classes in this year's Rolex. Great battles everywhere, and the same goes for LMP2.

    • @jacekatalakis8316
      @jacekatalakis8316 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Personally had way more fun and interest both with Le Mans 2023 and the Rolex 23.53 this year tuning into the radio coverage, I'd say if you want a broadcast that isn't sucking the GTP exhaust, give the radio crew a shot and see how you like it. JOhbn Hindhaugh explained the isue you had a while ago in that on TV you are bound by what the cameras show, if you get an awful director, you are stuck with that feed and that director and can't really go off script so to speak, whereas with the radio side of it you don't have that limit, you can hop around and talk about what is going on at that moment no matter if the cameras caught it or not

    • @larquefausse3623
      @larquefausse3623 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is why they should do more splitscreen feeds. It's a monster to direct, but it's definitely worth for the fan viewership especially when there are slugfests happening at the same time.
      For now though, having access to live in-car feeds is a decent cope IF the car is equipped with one. Fans watching replays are SOL, though.

    I couldn't watch this race because of Peacock showing commercials so fingers crossed IMSA has a non-commercial PPV/subscription deal like F1TV. I would gladly pay $80 per year for IMSA w/no commercials instead of $12mo (PeacockTV) WITH commercials. I canceled Peacock and won't be back.

    The “early checker” rule is there for one reason: Because drivers start cool down laps when they see that flag. In either situation, someone is getting shafted, so they decided it would just be better to call the lap the checkered flag came out the last scored lap. I happen to agree.

    I loved watching this year's 24 Hours of Daytona. I had an opportunity to watch about 12 hours of the race all in total. The ending was a disappointment with the checkered flag coming out early and the announcement of the winner with what was supposed to be 1-2 laps to go. It was broadcast multiple times during the race about how long it had been since Roger Penske had won Daytona. Wouldn't you know it , his car is in the lead, Cadillac is challenging.....and they drop the checkered flag EARLY. That's not a mistake, that's a fix for the win. Major disappointment. IMSA can say all they want and put out the press release for "Oops, our bad!" but shady is shady. Shame on them for taking away what was up until that point and exciting race that was yet to be decided.

      It was a mistake, I was rooting for the Caddy at the end as well but they weren’t making up 2seconds and making the pass on the final lap. Had the run to the finish been 15 mins longer I think caddy takes it, they had a good car in the second half of a stint

    • @MOTOR659

      @@offintheesses I understand your logic, but stranger things have happened on the last lap of races. The lead car brakes too hard and goes off track, turns in too late and puts a wheel in the dirt causing a spin, gets too close to the wall hitting it and scrubbing speed. No the Cadillac wouldn't have made up those 2 seconds if it were run without incident, but we'll never know because the flag was thrown early. The win is tainted for Penske & Porsche.
