I was there, in fact I’m probably in the front row. It was a Day on the Green in Oakland by Bill Graham Presents. He put on the best concerts and Lynyrd Skynyrd always put on an excellent show. This is their encore song, always. Ronnie comes back out and says “what song is it you wanna hear” and everyone always yelled FREEBIRD. I think I have concert stubs for $7.50 .... Goodness I miss the 70’s!!

I saw them down in Anaheim on August 27th, the following month. I was also a slender blonde sunburned cute teenager. We pushed up to close to the front. I'm now a grandmother of 3. Yikes, I miss the 70s too.
Best guitar band ever
Free Bird Live at Knebworth was so cool. They were one of the opening acts for The Rolling Stones and were told not to go on the front part of the stage was with the big red tongue.....but southerners and rules don't always go together...😂😂😂😂😂
Knebworth was much better. The cameraman wasn't focused so much on the girls in the crowd & the guys had more room moving around on the tongue.
@@candicescott7176 I saw them a few days after Knebworth in a tiny venue in Lewiston, Maine. Way past AWESOME! I honestly thought the building would collapse.

They are from Florida. Their name came from their school teacher his name was lynard
skinnard. They changed the spelling, they did not care for him. Btw, they died in a plane crash 4 months after this concert. I think four lived.

Lynyrd Skynyrd were a southern rock band out of Florida. Sadly only two band members from this performance are still with us. Gary Rosington on slide guitar ( yes he did the bird sounds) and drummer Artimus Pyle on drums. RIP Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Bob, Ed, Leon, Billy and Allen fly high freebirds 🙏
Even more tragically, a couple of months after this concert the plane they were on crashed in Mississippi with half the band members dying and the other half seriously injured. The heart and soul of the group, Ronnie Van Zant, had a premonition that he wouldn't live to 30. He died 3 months shy of this 30th birthday.
I believe Leslie Hawkins, one of The Honkettes, is still with us.
I just saw Artimus in Mt. Dora Florida. Has a Skynard tribute band. Dude is still killing it on the skins.
It's so sad. I was 15 during this time. Oh the 70's.

I was 17 yrs old and was there on July 1977. I lived about an hour away. Saw many bands there at what we called "Day On The Green". We saw two or three bands in one day. Only cost about $11 dollars. I'm 61 years old now and I will never forget the bands I saw. I just bought myself a t-shirt for my birthday that says " I may be old but I saw a lot of good bands". Good times!

The piano part is legendary. They were cutting the song in Muscle Shoals Alabama. When They left for a lunch break, a roadie sat down and started playing a piano part to fit what he had heard them play.
One of the studio engineers who stayed behind, heard and kicked off the tape recorder.
The roadies name was Billy Powell, a trained concert pianist, who became the bands piano player.

My dad says the same thing. I think the band knew EXACTLY how to end the song and that’s why it’s such a classic, iconic song and a great song to end each and every Skynyrd concert. Nobody leaves a Skynyrd concert wishing Freebird was a little shorter. 🤗

From Florida. Allen's (guitarist in all white) wife asked him once.."if I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" He told Ronnie(singer) about it and Ronnie used those words as the opening lyrics and wrote the rest of the song. Allen wrote all guitar parts including that amazing solo/outro! Great reaction!
Wrong Cassie Gaines wrote the first part when they was boarding a plane.

I was reading the comments to see if anyone had told you how that guitarist made that "Bird chirping " sound on his guitar... to many comments to read through to see anyone made a comment about the bird chirping sound ...
so Ill just tell you myself. He made the " Bird chirping " sound using a metal or glass cylinder called a " Slide" that is place on the finger ... then on the fretboard of the guitar... there are certain spots you just hold the slide barely on this string/strings ... and you make a sound called a " harmonic note " ... and then you lightly pluck the string/strings ... hence... the "bird chirping " sound. It take some practice to get it down perfectly! Lynard Skynyrd... the absolute best Southern Rock band in history! Enjoyed the reaction... two thumbs up 👍👍😎
Actually the slide doesn't make the chirp it's the side of the pick slid just a little bit along the string with the slide in certain spots to get the exact sound and tone. Gary Rossington and Duane Allman are probably the two best slide guitarist's ever and two great guitarist's period, now Allen Collins he's in that last room of best guitarists ever period with just a few others! 😎🎸🎸🎸💯

I somewhat agree with ya on the Greatest guitarist list but , as there are others like Joe Bonamassa, Bonnie Rate who also plays mostly "Slide" , Vince Gil, Joe Satriani, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Samantha Fish is making her way as a top notch guitarist, and ... and " My All time favorite Stevie Ray Vaughn... but he's wasn't known for playing much slide guitar although I have no doubt at all he would have been very good at Slide ... Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is ..another great guitarist, Warren Hanes ... and there's a long list of others! Before severe arthritis set into my joints... I could play some Slide guitar and I still can ... it's just not "smooth " and I can only play my guitar about 30 minutes before I have to stop and medicate myself for arthritis pain! Hope ya had a " Hollie Jolly Christmas and have a ... " Happy New Year" and thank God that the year of 2020 will soon be in the rearview mirror! 👍👍😎

I saw him tonight before the plane crash, in Greenville South Carolina they were on their way from Greenville to baton rouge the next afternoon and their plane crashed

The Allman Brothers never considered themselves a southern rock band. They preferred "progressive blues". Agree. Much better fit.
Joel, their genres were considered country music, rock, blues and folk and blues rock, but considered to be the founders of southern rock.

The crowd energy at the transition is beyond incredible. What every musician and concert goer desires.
So beyond good that bc of this...Frampton reportedly wouldn't perform after Lynyrd Skynyrd with Free Bird in their set...that's the measure of great seen here.
What the announcer said was 'This band's so good you would think they're from San Francisco.' San Fran had a very vibrant music scene and this concert was in Oakland California right across the bay. The band is actually from Jacksonville Florida, which was pretty much a hub for Southern Rock. As far as the arrangement of the song...Ronnie Van Zandt (the singer) was pretty much in control not just for the singing parts but all the rest as well.
I was actually at that concert and yes it was wild! And no it wasn't me with my top off lol to think a few months later 3 of the band members including vocalist Ronnie Vanzandt would die in a plane crash.

For the record, before the tragic plane crash, there were 10 members in the band including the three backup singers. The pride of Southern Rock!
They compliment each other while playing because they practice over & over to obtain perfection in performance!

Southern Rock at one of our finest moments. Grew up listening to this band, was devastated when their plane crashed. His brother carried on with the some of the remaining members at least, still not the same. Props to his brother though, he still sounds good but when you grew up listening to Skynyrd it was Skynyrd. They went to school together and had I think a P.E. teacher named Leonard Skinner that was an asshole and they made a kind of "parody" of his name for their bands name. BRILLIANT really cause this "teacher" tried to sue them. LOL, didn't work. Great reaction.

This is like a southern rock anthem. Ron VanZant the lead singer didn't wear shoes on stage to feel the better. He died in the plane crash. Several lived by the grace of God. Changed the the rythm at the end to leave the fans wanting more.🙂

i remember when the plane crash happened back in 1977. to this day it's haunting to hear ronnie starting out this song with - if i leave hear tomorrow, especially in this video where it's only 3 months before he died in the plane crash. R.I.P. ronnie and the rest of the members in the band who lost their life that night.
Dude you have nailed it! The lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant is the driving force behind this band. he totaly controlled how they performed. He kept them super tight and on target. that is why everything sounds so awesome.

Your assessment of how the song came about is spot on. Lead singer Van Zant was in the habit of 'letting the dogs run' in the studio. During rehearsals, they'd let it rip at times and Van Zant would say something like that is it, do that. A clever story is about the beginning of the song, best heard on the live version, where keyboardist Billy Powell plays a lovely piano intro. That was the last element of the song added. Powell was a roadie for the band and one day he happened upon a piano in a room and started playing it. The other band members heard him and gathered around to listen to him jam. Powell was a classically trained pianist, he played Bach and Beethoven and launched into a wicked version of Lady Madonna. He looked at the guys and said you know if I wrote a version of your song it would begin like this and he launched into Free Bird. Legend has it Van Zant fired him on the spot, then told him he had been hired as the band's new keyboardist. It took the band six years to perfect the song. The last version they performed can be found live at the Oakland Coliseum 1977. If you liked this version, you will love that one.
I was at this show Peter Frampton was also on the bill. Promoter Bill Graham put on these Day on the Greens every summer . 3 weeks later july 24 1977 i saw Led Zeppelin here Judas Priest and Derringer opened, July of 1978 sae The Rolling Stones Some Girls Tour. Peter Tosh, Eddie Money and Santana opened. I was 17 in 77 . Those were magical times!!!

I've watched several of these reaction videos to this live version of Freebird and you aren't the first one to think that girl had her top off, but she doesn't. It's the same girl in the yellow shorts they show several times during the video and she is wearing a halter top or bikini top and the strap is real low on her back. You can see it at 14:35. You also mentioned the piano player (Billy Powell). He was actually a roadie for the band in their early days. He sat down at the piano during a a break at a local gig they were playing and the band heard how good he was and asked him to join the band.

Ronnie Van Zant was a natural. It is said that in composing, he never wrote the lyrics down.
That bloke said, "...you would think they were from San Francisco". Sort of playing to the local crowd. Oakland is right across the Bay from San Fran. Skynyrd was/is a band from Jacksonville, FL. (The Allman Brothers were also formed in Jacksonville). The 904 can be proud. Or as they say, "Dooovaaaall".
This is called country rock or southern fried rock. They frequently filled stadiums with over 100k fans. The multi guitar solo is freaking awesome.

Call it like it was. Ronnie was a bully. Look at Allen's eye in this video. He has a black eye given to him by Ronnie the night before this concert. Ed King left the band because of Ronnie's bullying.
They were all some rough and tough hard partying Southern Boys, but the simple FACT is, Ronnie was a bully who was always beating on other ppl.
They were so great! It was so tragic when several died in a plane crash.
The drums and bass are amazing too. Thundering in background keeping the tempo throughout. When the guitars are going nuts towards end the drummer is killing it right along with them!

They wrote their songs to fit Ronnie's voice and that is rare they were so loyal it's so hard to find that many guys that had the same goals in music so driven and that passion took them to top never give up on your dreams

Brings me right back to the seventies! I was too young to see them in concert at the time (wish I had been smart enough to go in later years), but I loved their sound. It was all about the radio for us back then and we were lucky enough to hear them on it often. Great song!.

For guys and gals, the long straight hair, usually parted down the middle, was still everywhere, a holdover from the sixties. Many times you couldn't tell one from the other until they turned around. I have always lived on the west coast, but Southern Rock was big here also.

I saw them in 2019 and this song lasted almost 20 minutes.
They're from Jacksonville, FL. They went to Robert E. Lee HS and the phys ed teacher's name was Leonard Skinner. He hated long hair and rock so they came up with the name because of him. Allen Collins, the guy in white, wrote the guitar part when he was 16, but it took Ronnie years before he came up with words to it with a nudge from Allen. Sad that 3 months after this concert their plane crashed and Ronnie Van Zant, the singer and Steve Gaines, the guitarist in the red pants were killed. Steve's sister was also killed. She was a back-up singer. The other members were all injured really bad. Their assistant road manager and the pilot and co-pilot were killed too. I met Billy Powell a few times. There was a place called Ward's Landing right outside of Jacksinville and on Sunday's people would bring their instruments and jam on the stage outside. Billy Powell, Artimus Pyle or Gary Rossington might be jamming on stage sometimes. This was in the early 90's. We use to go there sometimes by car and sometimes by boat. The stage was outside and it was a blast.

I had the pleasure of seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd live in concert. One of the greatest concerts I ever went to. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a South Rock band who originated in Jacksonville, Florida, U.S.A.

They had a small house out in the country where they would write and sing. Most of the time they were tripping on mushrooms when they were.
Music today is crap doesn't compare to nothing back then music was music you went to listen to the instruments the band members the guitarist the drummer the bass the singer it was all different every band had their own style was great he was a fantastic time

Take it from a woman old enough to remember them back when they were just a struggling, regional band gigging anywhere they could, especially around the Southeastern US....they are from Florida and were guys who grew up together. The announcer was trying to make a joke by saying “they are sooo good they sound like they should be from SanFrancisco”. 😁

The guitar soloist was Allen Collins, in the white, wrote this song when he was around 16-17 years old. So no, the song didn't end after the lyrics. You need to Google them. There's a huge, tragic history to Skynyrd. They're my favs of all time & I could tell you just about everything there is to know about them. Saw them in concert in 76 when I was 10. No one knew that 3 members would be dead in just one short year 😢💔
Saw them a few days before the crash. Had tickets for show in Evansville, 2 days after crash. Still have them.
So glad you're enjoying what they were called southern rock. They were rock if you ask me. The members today that survived the plane crash got back together with Ronnie's younger brother Jonny. If it hadn't been for that plane running out of fuel there would have been more casualties. Freebird it was like an anthem with the band. 🙂
Talk about great musicians? These guy were at the top of their game at this concert. Now at 80 years, damn, how I miss not seeing them.
Deliberate and natural
Southern Roc genre, this was the only band in that era that had the 3 lead guitars playing in harmony , made for their distinct sound. Most of the original band members died in a plane crash. This is in essence a revival band now but sound so similar you really can't tell the difference. They were allowed to keep the name because at least 2 of the original members are still in the band. They were all from Florida and all childhood friends for the most part.
Actually Gary Rossington is the only original member left.

The band is from Jacksonville Fl USA and there are four guitars...the backup singer family members.
The thing about bands back in the day was that that they were really a group. They could play off each. They made music together and played together. The lead singer was another vocal instrument. After 30 years of loving this song I still don’t know the lead singers name because it’s Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not an individual but a band. We don’t experience that today.
