He didn't invent it, but he refined it to the rules we know today and he was the one who spread it. So without Sheldon, it wouldn't exist other than as a weird variant played by some guy and his friends.

He didn't make the original idea of the format, that was a friend of his who was from Alaska. But he formalized the format and made it official, which is equally, if not more, important.
