This may not look or sound that impressive but.. a 9 second quarter mile run is fast as hell in any car that isn't a dragster.
"Now you owe me a 10 second car." - Fast and Furious. Modified cars used to be fast in the 10s. Stock cars are doing 9's now. Pretty insane.
i don't think anyone thinks 9 secs in quarter mile is slow unless they mistaken it for 0-60.

This is even low 9s, 9.247. One youtuber Emilia has A C8 corvette, built, twin turbo, tune, and I think nitrus trying to get 9.4s, and like any shmo with a Plaid S can beat it.

Model S plaid is a 9 second 1000hp daily driver.

Jay Leno has owned and driven almost every car type in the world from the most ancient ones powered by steam engines to the latest multi-million dollar supercars. He is a kind of person who does not easily gets amazed by a car, unless the car has some kind of "miraculous power". And in this case, Tesla's "miraculous power" has probably put him in the list of the Guinness Book of World Records. So you can tell he is really amazed.

rimac nevera did the qm in about 8.85 seconds, which is faster than this tesla. honestly i am really dissapointed that jay didnt even mention that car, as it will be a production vehicle, and will be going on sale very very soon. he talks about the bugatti, but fails to mention rimac? does he know nothing?

I guess the beauty of this is that it's a full size sedan doing this. About 0.6 seconds slower than the fastest quarter mile time of a $2-3mil car. Whereas with ICE, a full size sedan has never been within 0.6 seconds of the fastest ICE car in a quarter mile before (as far as I know)

Jay Leno is RIGHT about electric cars, they definately will represent the majority of the new car sales in the near future (less than 10 years from now).
Not just electric, but self driving will be the standard. Within 50 years it will be illegal to manually drive on city streets and highways.

Say what you will about their stock price. They make an amazing made-in-america product that can put a smile on your face. Leno gets it.
I'm an Australian and the thing I like least about my Tesla is that it's made in America haha. Because build quality coming out of the China factory is better and the upcoming German factory will be even better than that.

@@kenion2166 trust me the people will drive it, and he never said it costs the same, but to be fair jay did say it was a record for a production car and faster than any 2 million dollar car, which wasn’t true because the Tesla did 9 seconds on a drag strip with has better grip than a normal road, and the nevera did 8 seconds on a regular road. Not to mention that the Tesla can only do that with a full charge because as the battery drains the car is slower, while the nevera can drive just as fast no matter the battery

I live next to a big city in germany, I never seen a bugatti, königsegg, or any million $ hypercar on a public street. So for me this cars are absolute pointless.

Great to hear positive feedback about a Tesla from an all-around car enthusiast. There's a lot of negativity behind the car community and tesla so it's nice to hear positives from one of the most well-known car enthusiasts of all.
One of the reasons for negativity. A lot of money/jobs goes into protection/extraction/refinement/delivery and up sell of cars that uses said oil. Now you have a car where you can make your own fuel from the sun.
Change is frightening.

I love everything about this video. I love Shep Smith doing the news in a positive environment. I love seeing notable car guy Jay Leno geeking out about electric cars and breaking the land speed record in a production car. And I love seeing the news reporting on electric cars as being fast, fun, reliable, and even affordable, and not making the whole piece some green washing about the environment. Yes, they're good for that, too, but there's so much more to these things. The future is now!
I've had my Model 3 for a year and a half now and I in no way can see me buying anything but electric from now on. Its so cheap to operate, I can ad 300 miles of range at home in my garage overnight for about $10, my truck right now cost me about $60 to go the same distance so I find myself driving it less and less. In the year and a half of ownership all I have done is rotate the tires once. I am way past time to do it again though. I also probably need to ad some windshield washer fluid but need to check. The instant power is so satisfying I just can't get enough of it. My truck seems like such a dinosaur when I get into it and try to punch it and go fast. Its so disappointingly noisy and annoying with the gear shifting and down shifting etc.

Hats off to Tesla to show everyone that electric is better . One thing I like about jay is that he is in for the technology , he like ice cars and he also likes the electric cars . He is not a dinosaur . I am like him and I am convinced that electric is just hands down better . Wait for batteries to increase in power density and reduce in weight and then they will be very good.

@@jg5001 I have driven a Model 3. So yes I wouldnt say no to test a Plaid. But I cannot for the life of me see how the driving characteristics of a model 3 are so different than a Plaid. Sure the Plaid will be like a rocket. But it will still make the same sound, it will still involve no gear changes, it will still feel soul less to me. That rollercoaster feeling is fun and all, but not what I look for when looking at a driver's car. But who knows... Maybe it is that shocking that it will convert me.
After a few runs, Rimac himself showed me the onboard telemetry that will be available to customers. With no effort, the car did an indicated 8.7-second quarter-mile at 160 mph. Keep in mind this car is also the safest in the world.
If it wasn't for Elon Musk and Tesla, who knows how long it would have taken for another car manufacturer to build the safest and fastest car for under $150k. (Probably wouldn't have such great technology either)

I am amazed at how efficiently he summarizes and promotes the advantages of electric drive. Now the challenges are to improve green energy power generation and battery efficiency/recycling technologies.
And the charging infrastructure. Tesla has a good infrastructure but we need a good general Infrastructure.

Until Rimac realizes that there’s this car called the Tesla Roadster 0-60/1.1 secs, (SpaceX Package) waiting to eat its lunch. Oh….and then Rimac also realizes that it’s not even a “production car”. So, even if there wasn’t a Tesla Roadster waiting in the wings, it still wouldn’t hold the fastest 0-60 speed for a Production Vehicle.
