Hey guys in this video we have our 2015 Chevrolet Sonic, and the gear shifter button is stuck! Makes the key stick to the ignition, cannot take the key out because the button is always pressed down and stuck.
We went to the dealership and purchased a knob button replacement kit! This is a very common issues among these vehicles! The dealer sells these kits separately and it’s very inexpensive around $13-$15 bucks after taxes
Fixing it is super easy! Take a look at the video! All it is.. remove a couple of plastic trim pieces, take out the button and replace in reverse order!

Sir thank you so much. I'm paying a note on a chevy trax and had the same problem. The dealership wanted to replace the entire gear shift not the spring they said it couldn't be done . I search online and found your video. My husband ordered the part we had it done less then 15 min's.

This video saved me. Thank you. Part ordered and will arrive next week. But I exposed the shift button underneath and am able to drive it until then.

Nothing broken, the button just slipped somehow and ended up underneath instead of on top of the actuator.

Thank you for the video, was able to replace the button on my trax in minutes super easily! Replaced every component that came in the kit and it even made my car look a little nicer now. Knew the button was broken, didnt realize how bad till after I replaced it.

Many thanks for posting this. An auto shop told me I'd have to replace the whole gear shifter for $289. with your instructions, I took it apart, hit the sticking part with some PB Blaster and now it works, even without a new part!!

Thanks, fixed mine today. Had this problem intermittently for weeks. GM dealer didn't know what it was. Suprise, he had two in stock.

I've had this same problem and the dealership wanted to charge me 400 to fix it. Ordered the part and will fix this in a few days and report back.

Thank you for this. My button broke off and gets stuck, and my mechanic wanted to replace the entire gear shift and said the part was $1000. It's a 2012, and I don't plan to keep it much longer, so not wanting to spend that much on it.
Should I get the part from the dealer or is online the same?

What happens if the shifter is just loose completely and you can’t drive???? On a Chevy Cruze
This part I never had an issue with until someone threw a 15 to 20 lb. rock through my windshield. Now this piece is not working and sticks all the time. It will slowly work its way out to release the key. The dealership looked at it for a $64.00 mechanic's diagnosis fee. This is where a large amount of a sticky substance is located that fills almost the top of the shifter. I have had this vehicle for 8 years and never had an issue until the rock went through. What would I need to do to fix this? The silver cover was hanging off. I am also wondering if the person(s) who threw the rock also put this substance in the shaft. I don't think I need to replace anything, but just get this substance out of the shaft. Thanks

My question is which dealership did you go to because they are trying to say they only sell it has a whole kit and want to charge me close to $100! Anyone find these online?

Everybody cuts out the part I have trouble with, putting the trim back on.
Stupid question I know. BUT...with my SISTERS 2014 Cruze, 52K highway miles, next to no city miles. A lemon of a car I would NEVER BUY!!! The shift lever, just like in this Malibu, is hard to shift into any gear. The trans. itself shifts smoothly, luckliy!!
It is the lever that is getting harder to move daily for her. The button still works,it seems. I got the lever stuck in the 'manual shift mode' today. I had to use the 'emergency shifter release' button, you know, stick a screwdriver in that hole above the lever,and a HARD PULL to get it out of that mode to move it That released it...is this the same issue?? OR is her trans. or the lever set-up dying??? Opinions???
hey there! thanks for watching and commenting - it sounds like to me there may be something preventing it from moving right... maybe something physically lodged in there or if not, it may be a problem with your shifter cable linkage etc.... have it professionally diagnosed at the chevy dealer. these cars are super simple to work on if diagnosed properly.

Ok I got the pin in. For some reason I still have the same issue where I can't get the key out when I move shifter to park. However when I didnt have the pin in, it was fine. 😒

If you put it in m mode that means your controlling your rpm’s so + is up - is down

@@jesuspenads eventually it will start happening with all the gears. and then will get stuck indefinitely. you are better off fixing it. :)
I thought it was a problem with my key and ignition for the longest time, never realized my button was sticking 😭
I tried to fix this but the thing that holds the pin was broken. Now I can't even put all the parts back together so my car is undriveable! Argh!

$14 from the dealer my ass. I just went to my local Chevrolet dealership, and I was quoted $135.
Can't even follow the first step because the button is stuck and I can't shift
Take my advice, REPLACE THE BUTTON. It will go from getting stuck to just breaking off. These are cheap POS cars. I have so many things that broke on my cars and buttons that don't work. If i ever buy a car again I'll go back to Honda Civic.
