I about cried when I saw him sitting in the engine bay to work on the truck. My dad is always telling me about the old school cars being so big they would basically do the same thing. I always just nodded my head and agreed never thinking I would ever see something like that happen.
Ford really screwed up on the threaded portion of those spark plug holes also. Not enough threads in the casting to secure the spark plugs properly. They would back out and rip the threads when they got blown out. Despite the massive complaints, Ford never did a proper recall. The only way to fix the issue was to have the spark plug holes rethreaded so the entire hole had threads for the spark plugs. An easy fix that Ford could've done, but they chose to leave it be so they could rape the customers for the expensive repairs. There was a company (can not remember the name) that would bore the spark plug holes and insert a self cutting sleeve. The inside was completely threaded for 100% thread contact for the spark plugs. It was a more permanent and stronger fix than the helicoil. Ford spewed a lot of hate towards the company because they were fixing Ford's screw up and preventing future dealer repairs.
A lot of "No No's" going on here. I've been doing this a long time and tuned many of these 3 valve engines up. Never, I repeat NEVER put a hand ratchet on these spark plugs. You'll more than likely break multiple plugs off. Remove the PCM, and bracket...put the smallest extention you can on it and use the strongest 3/8 drive impact wrench that you have. Not air ratchet, IMPACT Wrench. Only to remove them. Do not put JUNK like CHAMPION spark plugs back in this engine. They will not burn the fuel properly and you will be redoing it again. Put the newest made motorcraft plug back in it and TORQUE them to Fords specs. 25 FT lbs. The later model 09...with the smaller one piece plug is 9 FT LBS. If you don't torque them, they will work loose and you'll smell fuel and have a return customer. You know how I know this? I tightened them by hand with a ratchet like I've done a million times. No..Not this engine/ Torque them with a good torque wrench. You can put antiseize on them if you want. The impact jars them loose, it'll get them out every time.
Have a 2007 5.4 3 valve. I ran 2 tanks with Seafoam and didn’t brake a single plug. Ford dealer wanted $2,400 to change the plugs. New set of one piece platinum plugs was about $90 !! Perfect
Did mine years ago with a 1/2" air impact with the regulator turned down. Had it so that the tool had just barely enough power that I couldn't stop it by hand. A good PB soak the night before and they all came out.
Here's the thing to keep in mind about this: I have a 2008 and I bought the plugs and coils for the truck, black boots and extended plugs. BUT, when I took mine out, they WERE NOT the extended plugs that have been causing all these issues. Mine were the regular plugs, and they didn't break, and also they had brown boots vs. black. So, now I'm sitting on coils and plugs I don't need.
I've had several trucks where (after following all proper updated procedures) 7 come out trouble free....but just ONE is a pain. Then again sometimes a bunch break, and then having that $500 tool is nice. :D ps- The most recent procedure from Ford involves you soaking the carbon cleaner or penetrant OVERNIGHT after cracking them free 1/4-1/2 turn. Only then attempting to get 'em out. The idea with carb cleaner vs penetrant is that you might help "soften" some carbon chunks that would otherwise make the tip stay put....works well 95% of the time!
The champion plugs brake of on the top where the socket go’s on and leaves the threads or they strip the threads right out in the head. The factory ones are better, at least there’s a way to get them out without pulling the head
The extractor tool almost looks like a tap and die set the way that it works which is cool I still think that the one they came out with that design like that spark plug wise should have been smacked and put on the unemployment line if they were looking for job security for the Ford mechanics they did a home run but speaking as a shade tree it was total garbage
blah, I own a 2008 F-150, and there is a chance of the spark plug having issues, when I had the tune up on my F-150 they came right out. The first garage I took it to wouldn't even touch it because they where scared because of the horror stories floating around. The mechanic who actually did the work said he didn't have any issues what so ever.
I got a 2006 F150 with a raptor kit that needs some loving. i already replaced a 4x4 actuator a few yrs ago and now i think the same one went 2 yrs ago and i was kinda stumped at whats goin on so its been sitting . plus a 4x4 front axle boot was gone as wellas a steering boot so it needs ome good TLC to get roadworth again. how do i get in on this deal?
i bought that extraction tool and changed my plugs too a few yrs ago. none broke but a couple sreeeched like you wouldnt believe. Cant remember if i put in one piece replacements though :-( hope so, didnt know there was such a thing. but seems to me it still has a ticking sound. maybe a coil maybe a lifter? i dunno
Question, I have 1 plug I cannot remove from my 5.4 ford I cannot feel my 9/16 deep well to seat on to the plug nut? Dont know if the plug is loose or tight. The top of the plug does not come out with a magnet like the rest, so dont think its broken? Strange! Have you ever had this problem?
I would by a F 150, but not with that engine. There must be another engine for that truck other then that 3 valve engine. But I like my uncles 1975 F 150 with the 300 Inline six and three on the tree. Still driving around in Wyoming and never had any trouble changing the spark plugs.
Is the problem with the spark plugs breaking on the 4.6 or 5.4 L V8 engine or both? I was just wondering because I have a 2004 Ford F150 with a 4.6 L V8 Triton engine.
Not on that year, I've got an 07 4.6L and the spark plugs aren't that type of design. The 4.6L also doesn't have the same cam phaser issues as the 3 valve 5.4.
Do any of you ppl ever answer questions that can really help "Joe American" w/ his truck issues ?? I have a 1999 Ford F-150 w/a 5.4 V8. I understand the aluminum heads are very thin where the spark plugs thread in. That's why I've had 3 spark plugs already blown through the threads having to be fixed w/helicoils. I understand they can't be fixed twice. Solve this problem for good. Questions : a) do you know of this problem ? b) do you have a recommendation you could share ? c) are there aftermarket or other heads available that don't have the same problem & could fit this engine ? Thanks for your generous consideration, Steph (Stephen Boeker) Leesville, LA
Good show but this is just sounds staged why would you Park your truck for months when you need it for a job take it into a mechanic I can't figure something out or I can't get mine fixed I take it in I don't sit around for months.
#8 is the drivers side last plug. It is right against drivers side firewall with a ton of hoses wires and other garbage that makes it almost impossible to do yourself
DO NOT PUT CHAMPION SPARK PLUGS IN YOUR MOTOR THEY ARE SHIT PLUG NOTHING BUT ISSUES WITH THE , THEY BELONG IN A LAWN MOWER DAM PUT SOME TIRES ON THAT TRUCK THERE BALD
I about cried when I saw him sitting in the engine bay to work on the truck. My dad is always telling me about the old school cars being so big they would basically do the same thing. I always just nodded my head and agreed never thinking I would ever see something like that happen.
must be a smaller size fella, others would have broken half the truck trying that and bent the hood likely
😂😂Damn ,how old are you?
@@unrulyheart3530 duh, obviously I am old enough to know better :)
I have to imagine there’s a lot of Ford mechanics who would love to punch the engine designers in the face
Those trucks arent about hiway miles its about money and fords doing spark plugs for you $$$$ not alot of pride for the owner
Yea the 4.6 and 5.4 made a lot of Ford owners mad. Cmon, spark plugs are not supposed to loosen up and blow back out of the damn cylinder.
i know very many honda and toyota who would love to do much more than just punch

Major help! Thanks for this comment :)

Man they really push that Rock Auto goodness.
Did this to my 2010 about a year ago luckily they had redesigned the plugs by then.
Ford sucks donkeys balls
Dude, get some tires and an alignment. Those are almost bald on the outside.
well, he can probably afford the tires now :))
Tires are different on both sides.
Good ol 3v ticking like a clock, mine did up to 300k and sold it.

Those knocking camshaft phasers 😭
Had mine replaced
Best way to do these plugs is get engine warm and use 3/8 impact. Never broken one and Ive done hundreds
Wow, on a warm engine? interesting
This is the way!
The champion plugs brake of on the top where the socket go’s on and leaves the threads or they strip the threads right out in the head. The factory ones are better, at least there’s a way to get them out without pulling the head
Next project in the truck...exhaust manifolds
My passenger side exhaust manifold is cracked and man is it a sob to change! Worse than the spark plugs 10 fold!
Must've been desperate for a video. These people obviously have the money to have a shop do the work.
So has the truck been overheating? I ask because I see your coolant surge tank/over flow cap is missing. That sure wouldn't help the truck at all.
The extractor tool almost looks like a tap and die set the way that it works which is cool I still think that the one they came out with that design like that spark plug wise should have been smacked and put on the unemployment line if they were looking for job security for the Ford mechanics they did a home run but speaking as a shade tree it was total garbage

I know someone who had it done and every one of them broke off.
Some are nice, some aren't. I don't have the TSB in front of me but I know I've had the most trouble with 01-04 trucks.
So no one else caught the plug in the video that was missing half of its ground electrode? Wonder how the compression is on that cylinder? :^)
spyder000069 was thinking the same thing lol that doesn’t happen for no reason
I got a 2006 F150 with a raptor kit that needs some loving.

I'm in disbelief that nobody ran a code scanner right off the bat.

does the #3 sparkplug have an angle got it out cant get the new one to catch the thread
But you never EVER cleaned the throttle body. Big mistake!
This was awesome. Thank you for sharing
Thing you for the help
Next the timing chain
Why I avoid those engines. I like to change my plugs without needing special tools to replace them..
oh yeah? that is why F150 always has been most sold vehicle world wide for years......you must be right to avoid them
if half these people would change the spark plug well before 100k miles it wouldnt be an issue
I would by a F 150, but not with that engine. There must be another engine for that truck other then that 3 valve engine. But I like my uncles 1975 F 150 with the 300 Inline six and three on the tree. Still driving around in Wyoming and never had any trouble changing the spark plugs.
Mine stalls out every time it rains or gets wet. Can't figure out why. Started replacing sensors and tune up. HELP😢

Why are they using champion plugs?
Because they are the best you can buy 👍😀
@@bilbobaggins4710 Username checks out.
For the most part champion plugs kinda blow, but with this specific style of plug they actually make the standard for 1 piece replacement plugs.
The Kid is rolling in a Jag F type, not a Bentley.
I have an 04.lariat .it needs a .plugs .but .will .wd.40 .do tye trick ..
That's a baby Jag.
I need this done on my truck asap
Is there wires ?
I'm glad he didn't let that mechanic do the work because he couldn't even recommend he put a radiator cap on his tank 🙅🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
When i did mine all 8 broke off!
Ouch
Was u able to get them out?
The story is it he is still working on them spark plugs to this day
I don't think Dr Draws is with us anymore. The plugs were too much for him
Nice!!
How about them bald tires?
How bout them perky tits on the wife
Believe it or not that truck still sounds horrible after the fix exhaust manifold leak and cam phaser knock.
Luckily, so far there's only a little bit of phaser rattle. At least one of the exhaust manifolds is definitely trash.
Had the same problem with mine
That truck looks like my 04
What do you mean "We'll start with the spark plugs" THATS ALL YOU GUYS ARE DOING WHAT KIND OF SHOW IS THIS
That's not a Bentley
Lucky!!
Why is there a #nissan?

THE PLUGS WERE NOT THE ORIGINAL They could not break the plug. Still do not have a sure way to eliminate the possibility of breakage.
has anyone ever thought of seafoaming the life out of the engine before doing those plugs? carbon build up? seafoam removes carbon, common sense?
Good show but this is just sounds staged why would you Park your truck for months when you need it for a job take it into a mechanic I can't figure something out or I can't get mine fixed I take it in I don't sit around for months.
yay
Aaaaaaand.... their van is a Nissan. Shaking my head.
Why do none of these videos show how to remove #8? Driver's side closest to fire wall
What's number #8
Why is that one hard to get to ?
#8 is the drivers side last plug. It is right against drivers side firewall with a ton of hoses wires and other garbage that makes it almost impossible to do yourself
Leave it to Ford...
Shouldn't have asked for a fix, shoulda just pushed that off a cliff and got something that wasn't a ford
You’re wasting your time on the 5.4. Their lost causes
Ford builds disposable vehicles
DO NOT PUT CHAMPION SPARK PLUGS IN YOUR MOTOR THEY ARE SHIT PLUG NOTHING BUT ISSUES WITH THE , THEY BELONG IN A LAWN MOWER DAM PUT SOME TIRES ON THAT TRUCK THERE BALD
No help with the cracked exhaust manifold on passenger side?? come on guys. deleting my first comment about it aswell?
welcome to broken youtube, where half the time half the comments post......
Lol would love to see them shoot a video doing that. What a nightmare. Very difficult job to do even with a torch and a lift.
