      Hi Jonathan, I love your podcasts and this video in particular!!! I have a question, I wonder if you might have any tips for curling hair that does not like to stay curled :-) I could have curls in my hair for 24h and 2h after I take them out my hair is flat straight. Are there any products you could recommend? Thank you!

      Absolutely agree! I'm in my 20s but I find it so sad how women are told to cut off their hair to look more fashionable. In some cases it's ok, but I LOVE long hair. I actually think the 'short hair' look a lot of women go for is just a conservative attitude, which reflects the state of mind. Be Free and have fun, this mentality is so sad

    1- Wide tooth comb in shower to distribute conditioner
    2- Don’t overwash. 2-4X per week. Even sweat ok, blow dry it into your head. Use high quality shampoo no silicones/sulfates.
    3- Silk pillow case + hair in a loose top knot/silk cap. Sleeping damages ends.
    4- Don’t lift more than 2-3 shades. It will change texture, and takes long (years) to get back to normal.
    5- Wear your hair at any length at any age.
    6- Use heat protection on hair for less damage therefore less needs to be cut at the salon.
    7- Do not keep in clipins for long. Too damaging where it’s attached. Weaves as well. Max 3-4 weeks.
    8- Bonus - Develop a good relationship with a stylist you like. Also don’t use box dye, that change will be with you for years.

    • @hugzpls
      @hugzpls 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      8 - Box dye; if that ain't the truth tbh. I haven't dyed my hair from a box in 3 years and I'm still suffering the consequences.

      don't some of the salon shampoos contain sulfates, too? are there differences?

    • @existentialcrisis5354
      @existentialcrisis5354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i absolutely dont agree with the 2nd one. if your SCALP needs washing everyday, do it. just dont use strong shampoos (like for example head n shoulders) everyday use some gentle ones. keeping the dirt sweat etc for long might cause some issues

    • @existentialcrisis5354
      @existentialcrisis5354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      using strong shampoos is okay when your scalp needs it. not everyday, for some people, using shampoos with alcohols, sodium laureth sulfates everyday can cause irritation and again - excessive sebum production excessive

    Thank you for acknowledging that people may need to wash their hair more than 2-3 times a week. Everyone is just saying "oh, washing less frequently will train your scalp" and no, I tried that for 3 months, and the only thing it did is made me accept having greasy hair. I did it when I didn't need to go out anywhere and didn't have online classes to teach, amd oh boy, I'm never going to wash my hair any less often than every two days, and I only skip a day of washing if I'm not going anywhere.

    • @evnml

    • @cassthompson3386
      @cassthompson3386 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I used to wash my hair Every. Single. Day. Sometimes twice twice day. My hair would be so oily that I absolutely had to wash my hair every day...but when I finally stopped doing that to my hair, it stopped getting oily so quick. Now my hair doesn't get oily to the point of needing a wash for at least a week.
      Of course nothing works for everyone, but it did absolutely work for me.

    Oh my god, thank you so much, especially for the reminder that you should rock whatever length you want. I had LONG, gorgeous dark/somewhat golden brown hair, and in Indian culture, long hair is prized in women. I was tired of getting the same old layers, and impulsively decided to chop it off so that it barely grazed my collarbone, and I coloured it red for the first time! And oh my god, it was such a glow up! And because the length used to weigh my hair down, the short haircut was able to bring out my natural waves! This ties in to your last step about having a relationship with your stylist. It was this stylist who not only helped me pick the right shade of red (the fade looks amazing too, so no rush to get it touched up), but also the right haircut for my facial features! Props to you JVN and all the great stylists around who can see the beauty in their clients and help bring it out. ❤️
    Also, absolutely agree about boxed dye being shit. I know someone who has been using it for YEARS and her hair only looks good after extensive styling, because it's super damaged otherwise. :( It's a much better investment to go to a good stylist who can prevent damage and actually help you understand your own hair better.

    I completely believe in building a relationship with your stylist. My stylist has never once pressured me to get anything done that i never needed. I wanted to get a keratin treatment because I live in Singapore where it’s humid and he nearly beat me over the head with a dyson air wrap for wanting to do anything to my naturally wavy hair. I wanted to get some shampoo and conditioner at the salon and he told me that because i have virgin hair i was fine with the shampoo and conditioner that I was already using. Tldr; he saved me a fuck ton of money.

      100% this. It takes time sometimes to find your hairstylist but that relationship is so important. And you know you found the right one when they saying no to you or like you said, threaten you with physical harm when you share your latest color or cut idea 😂 If your stylist can stand their ground and say no, they are a good one.

    Thank you so much, I am 66 and sporting long hair (and I have never used color or damaged my hair). My big hassle though, I suddenly got a bad bout of psoriasis and I had to go through 7 series of prednisone, and then another anti biotic to cure that and promptly got Covid. It has made my hair fall out in strands by the handfuls. I'm sure this will help slow that down. The good thing with this...the grey fell, not the dark new hair. I look like I got a color job. I have to wait this out, but now I know I'll be doing the best things for my hair.

    I've always loved you, Jonathan 🥰 I have to say though, some of us can't afford the high price tag of coloring at the salon every 3-4 weeks. I ain't going gray, it's just NOT happening. So I color my own. I couldn't find a colorist to make me a nice red anyway. I've tried 3. The worst is was having a shade that fades in a week to orange. Do it myself and it's absolutely perfect. Perfect shade, perfect fade. And I get compliments when I do myself, even from the salon! I'll keep doing it myself.

    Thank you for the tip about silk pillow cases! Will definitely have to try that out! I have long curly hair that's prone to frizz.
    Tip of my own? If you have really long hair like mine, you could also try braiding it into two pig tails before bed. Keep it loose around the roots. I've found this really helps keep tangles to a minimum (no more mat in the back of the head!), sets my curls, and if I have zero time to style my hair, now I already have my hairstyle for the day!

    First, your voice, presence and existence bring me life. Thank you for always being your genuine self, for bringing joy and for all the fab hair tips! I love that you speak my language, you make concepts super easy to digest.
    Episode related question for you...throughout the years a lot of stylists have told me "only condition the ends of your hair, not the roots". I am a longtime in-shower conditioner/comber (wet brusher now). I even let it sit in a loose bun while shaving / washing to give it a little longer to work it's magic. However, I'm always hesitant to apply less than a residual amount of conditioner to my roots because of this "myth?". What is your take on conditioning root to tip?
    I suspect people fear the dreaded weigh down, but...not to brown nose or anything...JVN conditioner certainly doesn't add weight and I'm wanting to apply it more generously to my root area to feed the forest. Would love your advice. 💜🖤

    as someone with heavy curly/wavy hair, i actually enjoy having it bleached. the texture, feel and volume is actually easier for me to manage than my natural hair. i have been platinum for like a year now, with about 1 or 2 months in between to rest. i dont mind some roots, and work it into the look, with darker ashy grays, or blues. I also bleach and cut my own hair, and no, not a hairdresser or stylist. just years of having to live with curls!

      You could let your hair go grey . And this is kinda random . But I've found that you can use toner or purple shampoo not only on blonde hair but you can use it on grey hair as well makes it look more like a silvery whitey color. I could be wrong but it might work I'm pretty sure this is what my grandma use to do with her grey hair and it looked more silver ish / white ish color was beautiful. I also use toner on my brown ish copper ish hair and it helps my hair not look as yellow makes it more of a goldfish brown ish copper ish .
      But yeah I think silver ish / white ish hair is beautiful in my opinion. And isn't it like supposed to be trending that color
      Could dye your hair silver
      I'm not sure if that makes sense.
      Hope that helped 🙂
