Thank you Jonathan, you gorgeous babe, your eyes look so great! Thank you for the tips, I once dyed my hair black with a box dye 🤯. My mother used to tie my hair in tight, tight ponytails, ouch and use lemon juice on my hair. I learnt not go to the pool with dry hair, thank you. Please always include gray as a colour 🙏🏼.

So interesting. I also like my hair super wet when I blow dry it. I will even re-wet sections before I start drying them. I don’t understand when I see stylists waiting for Afro-textured hair to be damp or semi-dry before blow drying.

    Never To Dos:
    1. Bleach and tone long-term
    2. Slick back wet hair
    3. Use coconut oil on your hair/scalp
    4. Use rubber bands
    5. Use a black box color
Bonus Tip 5b. Use lemon juice or Sun In
    6. Wash with hot water
    7. Go into a pool with dry hair
    8. Round brush wet hair
    9. Rough dry randomly
    10. Stylist hop, aka not give a stylist at least 2 chances to get to know your hair before switching

    Two Things:
1.) Sun-In did me in as a teen. What can I say? It was the cool kid thing to do at the time.
As a person with incredibly dark and curly hair--when that hot @$$ mess *FINALLY* started to grow out? It looked like I had flames shooting up from my tips. Never again, folks.
2.) I worked as a vintage vehicle mechanic.....with waist length hair. Sometimes my hair ties would break. *NO RUBBER BANDS!* They are horrible for your hair.
A 16 penny nail, wrap your hair up french-twist style, use the nail to secure it, then put a bandana over your head a la Rosie the Riviter.
It only took one time having a chunk of my hair cut out of a drive shaft with a pocket knife to learn that lil' trick.
***Just my two pennies on the situation.***
As always, JVN, you are an inspiration and a love and you exude kindness and love. This world does not deserve your greatness. But we *NEED* you, sweetie! Keep being awesome!!
    ❤️

Black box dye is SO hard to get out. Mine is ~finally~ gone after 2 years, so much damage, and more than $1,000 to get to a highlighted dark blonde (might be different for another end goal). At this point, most of the black dye has been cut off, but definitely a long and expensive process if you want to look decent throughout the 2 years, lol!

I just ordered a whole bunch of JVN products, including the scalp oil! I'm so excited. I love what your brand stands for. I am confused however, as on your JVN website the pre-wash scalp oil does state quite high on the ingredients list: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil. Is it ok in formulations rather than stand-alone, raw coconut oil?

  • @sahmoo

what about coconut oil for indian hair? I obviously take your advice incredibly seriously, it's just that as an indian it's just passed down generation after generation to use coconut oil (more commonly than other oils) like my great-grams, grams, and my mama have used and have asked me to use coconut oil! if it's not cute to use coconut, what other kinds of oil do you advise? especially for dry scalps! "It's textile dye." Ewwwww. 😭 That's why my hair sucked so much in highschool... Nasty friends were jealous of my natural hair (which looked a lot like yours 😉) and told me I'd look better if I dyed it black.... I struggled for years trying to get it out, I'd give up and dye it back anyways... Eventually I said eff it and grew it out... Then I bleached the heck out of it and went through that cycle... Proud to say I haven't colored or bleached my hair since 2018 maybe? Idk. I grew it really really long... And when it got too hot this summer, I chopped off 18 inches lol... I could have donated it but I had too many layers (another struggle). I finally found a good hairstylist after 10 years (I live in a smaller city where talented people leave a lot) so I've been cutting and dying/bleaching my own hair for years.
I still don't think I'm gonna bleach or dye it again. If I do, demi permanent or a small number of highlights only... I am embracing my natural hair color that I was trained to hate when I was younger. 😊

Fading is not. Go see a stylist pleaseeeeee. Back when I was like 18 maybe I had my mom do a box red dye that took in a skunk streaks, and I ended up getting my hair dyed one shade below, black out a stylus because they could not get the red out… And the black Done by the stylist came out this gorgeous, rich chocolate brown when it faded versus the dark brown box dye I did, fading into a copper orangey red.

My hair tangles easily throughout the day and to detangle it, I prefer to use a wet brush and brush it in the shower when I have conditioner in. I warned my son about box black die, but he didn't listen and found out that he hated having black hair, he was a sandy blonde. He didn't get it out until boot camp and they shaved it all off.
When I was a teenager, I used Sun In and lemon juice with peroxide. Lucky for me it just lightened my hair, no orange 🧡

I do a lot of historic costuming for fun and I always thought black box color looks like clothing dye. Yay instincts proven right! I know black henna comes with it’s own permanent risks but it is so much more manageable in the long run!

JVN will you recommend a coconut oil alternative??? I must admit I'm guilty of doing this in the past as I occasionally need a deep conditioning treatment. That was such a convenient already in the cupboard option 😅

Question- is there a right way to towel dry hair? I always see people wear those towel twisties on their head, but I can never get mine to stay put. It starts slipping the minute I walk around. Is just patting/squeezing out water fine?

Love these videos so much! It’s so helpful. When thinking about slicked back hairstyles. it made me wonder about braiding. I have 2A hair so what I do is shower put leave in and curl defining cream in and braid my hair in 2 Dutch braids when it’s still mostly wet, that way in 1-2 days I can take it out and have nice waves. Do you think that’s okay or should I be braiding my hair dry? I do this 1-2 times a week.

Sparkly creature ✨, I' d kill to show you how a calf length with 12 cms of ponytail diameter ballerina does "one" bun. "One" because it just looks like but, underneath, anatomy, geometry and maths knowledge to achieve a perfect distribution and layering of weight so there' s no traction anywhere. It also looks tightened and sleek but, again, it' s just an optical illusion created by light reflection😉. And, no, no daily hairspray/gel😱. Fixation and shine comes from specific leave on products compatible with a sweaty follicle. Thanks for making my days better 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

Lol😂my hair is so straight, fine and flat that towel drying my hair is a tool to get body! Fyi, never have frizz...(also, my hair takes forever to air dry, I look like a drowned rat) any hints for help with my hair type would be welcome. Also, my hair color is awful, tree trunk brown, ash brown, very plain and dull. I did keep highlights in it, but it's virgin and ugly now.
