My late father in-law's name was Elmo Gideon or just Gideon. He was an artist, sculpture and painter. He has a gallery in Thomasville,Georgia. My wife's step mother is living there and is watching over all his life's work. He has hundreds paintings and sculptures on display there. It's a shame that he never was very well known. Amazing! I was wondering if you painted the whole first portion before the deer at once. You kept painting over the trees and adding in branches and leaves and I couldn't tell if the background was dry by that time. Thanks for sharing these!
hi Mary :) Thank you so much, whenever you see my lines are smooth (like when I was painting branches) and the paint doesn't bleed, that means the background is dry... if you see the colors bleed a little bit (the lines/branches are not smooth but bleed into background) that means the background hasn't dried all the way... I painted it in maybe 1hr 20min... Sometimes I wait couple minutes for layers to dry and I usually indicate that in my videos.. if I don't indicate that waiting time then most likely I move to the next section, that's how I allow the first section to dry before I can start working on it again :)

luv your technique with WC and would like to know more about the paints and brushes you prefer. I think that all of the painting demos that I've seen thus far have been on hot press. Is this a standard of yours or only when you want to achieve a special effect? ~ jerry been WC'ing for 6 weeks and need all the help I can get. tnx
Hi There :) Thank you so much for the comment. Yes, hot pressed is my favorite paper and I pretty much use it 80% of the time. It's very smooth, the smoothest of all watercolor papers. Cold pressed is fun too. It's bumpy and dries a bit longer but it lets you paint more of a loose watercolor style, it's like those little tiny bumpy holes trap the water/pigment in and you wait until it settles. Then you have rough watercolor paper which is considered the toothy one, more bumpy.. it's very good for dry brushing techniques. I like hot pressed because it's smooth, dries faster and the colors come out more vibrant than cold pressed or on rough. It also absorbs more paint and water, which helps me create nice smooth surfaces. A lot of my night scenes are on hot pressed because the dark skies look more smooth this way. For the paints, all the paints are in tubes, liquid form, and brushes.. if you go to my description section in the latest videos, there is a list of all the colors and brushes I recommend for beginners.
