I live here in Oregon and have visited Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach many times. your painting is very well done. I liked your beach techniques with water on the sand and the reflections. Thank you for your demonstration It was very helpful.

I was surprised by some of your methods. At first I thought, "This won't do...she's leaving hard edges all over her skies." Then I continued watching and learned how you deal with that problem by layering...adding strong colors and then softening them. Can't wait to try out what I've learned. Thanks! By the way...I live in Oregon.
Yes, it's one of my methods to work on backgrounds, with watercolors you can soften every layer later, and if the color sits too deep in the paper, I use permanent white gouache, it automatically spreads the color more and adds that matte texture.. light laters than heavier layers. Oregon is beautiful! Thanks for the comment :)
Hi John, I only used one gouache and it was permanent white by Utrecht. So you must be talking about a color perhaps? Would you know in what part of the video? If you give me the exact time you saw it, I will tell you what color it was, or colors that I mixed together. I used a lot of Browns and yellows, it could have been yellow ochre. Also it could have been a brown mixed with that white gouache. Thanks
Hi John, I used two colors: Yellow Ochre by Winsor & Newton (You were right and good eye for the color :) and then at some point I believe it was Gamboge Hue (yellow) by Grumbacher. Hope this helps!

I am so glad you can learn from me 😊 I uploaded this video at the beginning of August and back then I was editing it in a different format without many annotations underneath the video. I am not able to fix it the way my newest videos are but there's a way to add some notes using TH-cam options. I will check if I haven't added the annotations there yet as they are only visible if you use a desktop computer I think but not on a smartphone. I will check :)
I am a beginner, but I guess I have had enough practice to successfully guess that you were using hot press paper. The way the water and / or paint kinda 'runs around'' has a distinctive look to it.

I was wondering - did you use any gouache or was it all watercolor? It looks like some of the paint was more opaque than I might have expected. In any case - I LOVE the end product! Hi Shrinithi :) I pretty much only use watercolors out of tubes, I highly recommend for landscape paintings like this one.. so much easier to get paints on your palette and play around without dabbing and dabbing into a pan ;)

Hi Susan :) thank you! I don't stretch my paper at all. This one was a hot pressed 140lb. So it dries fast and absorbs a lot of water and paint. Also my paints are out of tubes, so when I create my palette I sprinkle all with water and mix colors as I go. Thank you :)
I'm fascinated by your liberal and unencumbered use of the white gouache (must really upset the Purists!) You say you use the W&N designers white, and I am wondering if you find that particular paint superior, or if any ol' white gouache would do? Your unique approach to watercolors is very beautiful, I love the way you abandon tradition while still producing such excellent eye catching work. I feel It speaks to your being self taught, in the best way. I may have to steal your technique a bit. Inspiring stuff, keep it up!

Hi Magda :) thank you so much! this is one of my older paintings, actually one of the first ones I posted here to my channel... I wasn't mentioning full color names back then. I'd say if I painted it today I'd use Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Phthalo Blue (I am sure I used it then too)... then Indigo, Burnt Umber... more earthy tones :)

In addition to white gouache, at one point you were also adding what looked like yellow ochre over a dark color. Was that gouache also?

16:39 and 17:36 a light gold color into the dark sea.
