I'm not even a fan of 80ies gymnastics but this routine had me in awe and I had to rewind a couple of times because I couldn't believe it O.o Absolutely stunning.
Not a fan of 80's gymnastics? That was such a unique and creative era with the likes of Shushunova, Silivas, Omelianchik, Boginskaya, etc. Gymnastics back then was more open to creative and unique routines compared today's more stringent scoring system.

An amazing gymnast gone too soon. I will say, I remember as a young girl watching this live and the Shushunova will always be one of my favorite moves in ladies' gymnastics. Not a flashy move just a powerful one. Her second tumbling pass was AWESOME!
IMO her best floor routine of these games and quite possibly my favorite of all time.That first tumbling pass was epic and the look on her face when she stuck it was like "that's right bitches, bow down".
Those soviet gymnasts who won AA competition (al round) were Tatiana Gutsu in Barcelona 92 and Lilia Podcopayeva in Atlanta 96, great gymnasts also, but no one like Shoushonova R.I.P.

Yes, Elena and Oksana were close companions for quite a while in 1988 and maybe only few could share the pressure that was put on Elena the way Oksana did. She was without doubt one of Elena´s strongest moral support. A real friend and great honourable sports champion herself!

Uncomparable. The longer I know her the more I am convinced that it was her dignity, clarity and 'old-fashioned' (vintage) style rather than her superiour difficulty and perfection that fascinated most. Although short and only 19 here she is reminiscent of the great Russian gymnasts of the 60ies (Kuchinskaya, Latynina, Astakhova etc.). Real women's gymnastics.
Wow! I remember this routine from twenty years ago - I spent a whole summer trying to do a flic flac off my knees like that, and just ending up covered in bruises. I love her.
I love many gymnasts, with Elena Mukhina being my all-time favorite, but I must say... Shushunova was out of this world. It's like she was gymnastics in flesh and bones.
Según mi humilde opinión, me parece el mejor ejercicio de suelo de la historia. Combina interpretación, pasión, dificultad y una coreografía magistral. Podrán hacer muchas más dificultades actualmente, pero no alcanzarán la belleza de este ejercicio.
Las virtuosidad de esa época, podía llamarse legítimamente "gimnasia artística" cada gimnasta tenía su propio estilo, ejercicios milimetrados, la combinación perfecta de dificultad, coreografía y personalidad, variedad fenomenal de elementos y variaciones. No bastaba solo con tener dificultad por los aires, había que asombrar a los jueces y espectadores con el control del cuerpo. Ahora los ejercicios de suelo parecen: dificultad-agitar brazos-dificultad-moverse un poco-hacer saltos-dificultad-esperar años antes de un giro. Para mi (opinión personal) los últimos grandes ejercicios en cuestión de artisticidad fueron los del equipo ruso en las olimpiadas de 2012

The choreo in the late 80's was so great. Risky and revolutionary. I remember thinking this was a risky choreo because the judges at the time seemed to be into a really light hearted romanian style. I thought they would deduct her for being so serious but thank god they didn't.

There was a charming interview here on youtube where Elena and Oksana were interviewed at their joint 1985 World all-around victory; the interview was in English, and although they knew very little English, they did really well, and it was just so sweet. Lo que esta niña hacía es de un grado de dificultad y riesgo tan altos que muchos de sus ejercicios han sido prohibidos en competencias internacionales. Sus ejecuciones son ABSOLUTAMENTE LIMPIAS, desde las puntas en sus pies, la amplitud de sus giros, la perfecta postura del cuello y cabeza, la extensión en los brazos, simplemente PERFECTAS. This, I feel, is Elena's best floor routine ever. She really improved on her dance & artistry instead of just relying on her awesome power & tumbling abilities. I saw her in winter 1988 in America as part of a Tour of Champions featuring Olympic & World champion athletes. She did her Olympic beam routine (a little watered down of course) and some exhibition routines. And the US didn't ruin the sport-Judges & officials did by changing the rules & scoring so drastically since 1989.
Actually since Athens 2004, the code changed drastically to please the Americans. Sadly we currently see more and more difficulty over artistry. The 80s were the peak of Artistic Gymnastics.
RIP Yelena Shushunova, a true legend in the sport of gymnastics.

This was easily the best floor performance of Shushu's illustrious career! PERFECT! She really created an olympic moment here! Bravo!
