    Hi, great videos! Was wondering what you did with the GPS, I haven't done mine yet. I would prefer to use the mercedes GPS antenna, you indicated you would do this later in the video but I haven't seen it. Was there already a GPS antenna behind the radio? did you have to purchase a separate frakas C to SMA connector? or did you have to run a wire all way to the trunk? (I've read conflicting posts on forums about this). Thanks!

  • @jozzerful2

    Great video I now have the confidence to do this on my own I was wondering why you did not attach the wiring for the reverse camera and then just leave it fell down at the ashtray somewhere until you did need it instead of leaving yourself in a position where you have to open it all up again

      Hi jozzerful2, thanks for watching the video and I’m glad you find it helpful. At the time I filmed the video, I actually didn’t know how I will connect the reverse camera. In hindsight, I should have planned ahead so I didnt have to open it up twice :D. But you know what they say, “practice makes perfect” 😁 I think I’ve opened this headunit too many times.

    Hey. Just a question on the GPS antenna. I see you put it on top of the dash. Was there poor signal when it was in the dash?

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Greg, Tbh I didnt try putting it inside the dash so cant comment which option is better. One thing I can say is that since I mainly use Carplay, having the GPS receiver was unnecessary for me.

      Hi zabiddin, thanks for watching the video. With regards to the radio antenna, i ended up using the black connector because the headunit didnt detect any signal when I connected it to the yellow one.

    great video withlots of detail. How is the interface with your instrument panel of your dashboard. For example, on my mercedes I get navigation instructions from my Comand head unit (I see you don't have that). I'm wondering if it will still work if I build in this head unit, do you know that maybe? And would it be possible to use the existing GPS cable?

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi vingibson, yeah thats a tricky one. But with this headunit on my W203, when I use the built-in Radio app, the LCD screen on the instrument cluster seems to display the info if I set the mode to Audio. When I switch to use Carplay on the headunit and I’m still on Audio mode, the LCD screen will just say “AUDIO OFF”.
      However in saying this, there is a built-in Navigation app in this headunit called iGo Navigation. I’m not sure if this (like the built-in Radio app) can send info to the instrument cluster LCD screen.
      With regards to the existing GPS cable on your car if that can be used with the headunit, probably best if you send a message to the seller to confirm. Have you tried reaching out to them?

  • @DrTewmah
    @DrTewmah ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I see these types of head unit and wiring harness don't have an optical output. How did you get the output from the new unit to interface with the mercedes connector?

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dr Thewam, my C200 does not have the upgraded Harman Kardon (HK) speakers so it doesnt have the fibre optic cables. The audio comes out from the main ISO connector and into the car’s wiring harness. But I did hear about other people having issues with connecting this headunit with their HK speakers. It seems there is fibre optic converter that is needed.

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Abel, thanks for watching my video and sorry for taking a long time to respond.
      My C200 does not have the upgraded Harman Kardon system which means it doesn’t use fibre optics to connect to the speakers. All the speaker connections are in the main ISO plug of the headunit and it was a simple plug-and-play for me. If you are not sure if this Android headunit is compatible with your car, please reach out to the seller directly. They should be able to help you as long as you provide them with the Year/Make/Model of your car and photos of your existing car stereo.
      With regards to your question regarding CANBUS, I believe the CANBUS doesn’t carry audio signals - they’re mainly used to read/transmit signals from the car’s onboard computer to the various components of the car.
      I hope this is helpful and let me know if you need further information 😊

      @@AutosNGizmos thank you very much for the answer, I will get in contact with the seller, I think there is a small unit that converts the analog audio signal from the radio to the fiber optic receptor from the car original audio system and integrates the original Mercedes Benz audio amp.
      Thanks again !!!

    Hi, great video. Could you use and screen that is a double din for or would it have to be specific to the Mercedes design? Thanks

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gav, the original car stereo that came with this car was also a double-din so if there is another after-market double-din car stereo that is not built specifically for your car model, there are two things you need to worry about:
      1) Does it have the correct fascia kit to cover any gaps between the new stereo and the dashboard?
      2) Second, it would also have to clear the inside frame so it will sit nice and flush.
      As an example, I’ve worked on a headunit install for an X5 E53 (from 1-din to 1-din and it came with the correct fascia kit) but in order to fit it in, you need to cut a plastic frame inside the dashboard cavity because it gets in the way of the new headunit.
      So the safe answer to your question is that the new 2-din headunit need to have the correct fascia kit and conform to the shape of the dashboard cavity.
      I hope that answers your question. Cheers!

    great video. quick question im a bit confused on what model would be best to order from what i understand i dont plan to store any music or movies on the device so i wont need a big rom. in regards to the ram do you think 1G ram is too small, i would only be using the navigation and radio simultaneously (wouldnt have loads of apps open at the same time).
    also on the smaller models it states it doesnt support android auto, what does this mean, i cant connect my phone via usb and use google maps or just that i dont have the function to do this without connecting my phone.
    Thanks

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Zuber, thanks for watching my video 😀
      That’s the problem with the models with lower CPU and memory, they don’t come with Android Auto and/or Carplay functionality. I think in those models, you won’t get the app called “Phonelink” and “Autolink” which emulates Carplay and Android Auto respectively.
      If you need to use navigation software such as Google maps or Waze (which you need to download and install separately), you need to store the map data on the unit itself or always have the headunit automatically connect to your mobile hotspot so it can download map data on demand (I think). But either way, I’m sure this will use up memory on the device. If you choose to get the model that doesn’t have Android Auto or Carplay support, you wont be able to connect your phone to the USB port and you cannot interact with your phone using the headunit display.
      But if you don’t use maps every time you drive, I think you should be alright without Android Auto (or Carplay) as the radio functionality is acceptable IMHO.
      There is another app that comes standard called EasyConnect but all it does is do screen mirroring. That app allows you to see what’s being displayed on your phone directly into the headunit screen. For example, if you rotate your phone and change to portrait orientation, the headunit screen will also rotate - it’s weird and I personally don’t like it.
      I hope I answered your questions clearly. If you have further questions, please just put them in the comments and I will respond as soon as I can.

      Hi MST3K, thanks for your feedback and watching my video. The headunit I installed for my W203 as featured in the video is sold by a seller called KAPUD in AliExpress. The link to the product is in the description box so make sure to check it out later. Just a note that some viewers of the channel have reported that if your car has Harman Karon speakers or a three-spoke steering wheel, you might encounter some issues with sound and steering wheel control. So please make sure to check with the seller for compatibility.
      I also love this car just like you and got it second hand about 2 years ago. I love the way it looks an the way it drives. Mine has a slightly less mileage (86k miles).

    Amazing and informative video I am thinking of upgrading to w203 android multimedia too. Does the phone have to be connected via usb all the time for navigation, youtube and other things to work or bluetooth is enough for that? How is the calling and answering working while driving?

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Stėja,
      Firstly thanks for visiting my channel and watching this video.
      If you have an iPhone, there is an option to enable Wireless Carplay so you dont need to plug in your phone on the USB. I find this feature really great for short trips. However for long trips, I tend to plug it in the USB to keep my phone battery charged up. Unfortunately for Android phone users, the only option to use Android Auto is via wired USB connection.
      Alternatively, there is a way to use navigation, youtube and music without using Carplay and/or Android Auto. But you have to install those apps directly on the headunit from Playstore (remember, this headunit is an Android system). Once installed, you can connect the headunit to your phone’s hotspot. And finally there is bluetooth.
      IF YOU ARE HOTSPOTTING:
      Allows the headunit to connect to the internet and gives it the ability to download map data in realtime while using turn-by-turn navigation, play songs via spotify and watch videos in TH-cam (while the car is stationary of course 😉). This setup requires more cpu/ram so I would stay away from the entry level spec. As an alternative to hotspot, you can get a 4G SIM card and install it in the card slot.
      BLUETOOTH:
      You can also just simply connect your phone to the car via bluetooth and have all phone audio (Navigation, music, TH-cam, etc) go through the car speakers. You will still be able to control music playback using the steering wheel controls. The only drawback here is that you need to mount your phone on the dashboard if you are using it for turn-by-turn navigation.
      PHONE CALLS WHILE DRIVING:
      WIth phone calls, you simply use the answer/hang up button on the steering wheel. However, the built-in mic in the headunit is not of good quality so make sure to install the external microphone that came with the package. You can watch my other video if you need help with that installation as well. Link here 👉 th-cam.com/video/T0IaLzNrsvA/w-d-xo.html
      I hope this information is helpful. Good luck on your project and feel free to check back in here if you need further assistance.
      Cheers 😊

      Hi David, I bought the headunit featured in the video from an online store. You can check it out using the link below.
      Android Headunit - a.aliexpress.com/_mLsCqQp
      Be sure to confirm with the seller compatibility with your car (they usually respond in a very timely manner) before you make the purchase.
      If you are an Apple user (like me) and want Apple Carplay, support is through a built-in app called Phonelink but you will need to purchase the higher spec model. If you are an Android user, some users report here that Android Auto isn’t supported unless you purchase a separate license for another app called Autolink.
      Good luck!

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jan, sure can. I’ll refer to the instruction manual that comes with the unit and make a video to demonstrate the features. But as a quick overview, the radio app has 3 FM and 2 AM bands. Each band can hold up to 6 radio stations. There is an auto-scan button to pre-fill all 18 FM stations (or 12 AM stations) for you.
      In terms of signal quality, it will be hard to quantify this but all I can say is that from where I live, it can pickup all (if not most) FM/AM radio stations and I don’t hear any static/crackle in the speakers. Of course if I’m in an underground car park its different.

But I thought if the USB port is there, that means when I have the phone plugged in, there is a wire running across the screen which could interfere when you need to press a button. So with that said, I’ve discounted that option and now looking at installing one USB port on either:
      1) Cigarette lighter
      2) The space just on top of the Cup holder - but this spot might be troublesome if you spill coffee
      3) Inside centre arm rest compartment
      FYI, the second USB port I just intend to hide somewhere because I’m using it to connect the TPMS receiver unit.
      Your thoughts?
      Cheers!

      Hi NoLoucas, thats a great question. I suppose if the headunit keeps on switching to the reverse camera input and you don’t plan on putting a reverse camera, it becomes an annoying “feature”. I don’t have an answer to your question right now but I’ll check if there is a firmware setting to turn this off and if I can’t find anything, I’ll reach out to the seller what they think. Hi, brilliant video, I purchased the same headunit, but unfortunately after connecting everything up, the head unit won’t power on, every time I press the power button a message pops up on the dash saying “faulty display, visit workshop”, I done a few small tests and couldn’t figure out what the issue is, if it’s the canbus or head unit, there is power going to the unit, put the old one back in and worked fine, might try playing around with the green canbus pins next, any ideas?

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tommy, Sorry to hear you are having issues with the headunit. I would suggest that you inform the seller (if you havent done so already). But based on your description, it sounds like either a canbus or the wiring harness issue. It might also be worthwhile taking a photo of these components and how you’ve hooked it up and send it to the seller. If you have a multimeter, you might want to check if the pins of the quadlock connectors are properly connected to the wires.
      I hope this is helpful.

      Hi Tony, I bought this headunit from a store in Aliexpress called “Kapud” (link to the product can be found in the video description. If you haven’t purchased from Aliexpress before, the buying experience is similar to ebay. Looking at the link now, I can see this reseller will have a sale from 11/Nov so hold-off the purchase to avail of some minimal discount (every dollar saved counts 😁).
      In terms of the make, I don’t think Kapud themselves built this headunit (I might be wrong). They are probably just resellers which means if you search in Aliexpress hard enough, you will notice several resellers sell similar-looking products 😁
      I didn’t have first hand buying experience with this reseller prior to this, but leading up to the purchase, I asked them several questions to make sure I’m getting the right product and they are very responsive - including responding to my follow-up questions after I bought the product.
      Lastly, please note I don’t have any affiliation/s to either parties (Aliexpress or Kapud). The answers I’m providing to you now are purely based on my own personal experience.
      I hope this information is helpful.

    Hi, first of all, good video and very helpful.
    I bought another kapud android radio like this one, and I also installed it in mu car. But the problem is the radio is turning on when I plug the key into the car. And I can’t turn off using the button, and I would like the same behaviour as the original one, that I could turn on and off with the button and I didn’t need the key plug in for that.
    Do you know how to change that?
    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Juan, thanks and I’m glad you liked my video.
      With regards to the radio behaviour, I think mine behave as your second one - radio turns on when I insert the key - but I think only when the radio app was playing before I switch off the car. Have you tried killing the radio app on the task bar before you turn off the car and then re-inserting the key and see what happens?
      FYI, I didn’t even know you can turn on the radio without the key in the ignition.

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Soufiane, Thanks for your feedback. I didn’t use any special harness/connector for the fibre optic wire (I’m assuming it’s the two orange wires you are referring to). The Quadlock connector that comes with the headunit wiring harness even has that part blanked out (Check out video around the 26:10 mark). So if that is what you are referring to, it is certainly not connected to anything but I still get a decent/acceptable sound coming out of the speakers.

      Hi Hriday, firstly thanks for visiting my channel.
      You can purchase this Android headunit using the link below. It will take you straight to the seller’s product page. Also if you head over to the description section of this video, I have links to other products that you may need for this DIY project. So make sure to check that out too.
      -> Android Headunit for MB C200K W203 (tidd.ly/3yPeEjz)
      Before you make the purchase, please confirm with the seller if this is compatible with your specific car. You can do this by simply sending them a photo of your current OEM car stereo. Look for the “Contact” link somewhere in the page to initiate a chat session.
      After getting their confirmation, the next thing you need to do is decide the spec of the headunit you want to get (there are several options). Lower-spec’ed units doesn’t usually come with Android Auto or Carplay integration. So if AA/ACP is important to you, be prepared to spend a bit more. But in my opinion, having AA or ACP makes a whole lot of difference in driving experience. You’ll forget you are sitting inside a 15 year-old car 😁
      By the way, Android Auto support isn’t enabled by default but since the seller advertised support for AA, you should ask the them to give you the activation key for the AutoLink software - even if you are iPhone user. Autolink is like an emulator to enable Android Auto on this headunit.
      I also read somewhere that if you have the sports steering wheel (the one with three spokes), steering wheel control buttons might not work.
      Lastly, I’m glad you decided to do this DIY project. The hardest part to this job is removing the control panel just below the A/C vent as well as the A/C control panel below the OEM stereo. But if you have a pick tool similar to the one in the video, you should be able to pull it out without issues.
      I hope you find this info helpful and good luck on your project 👍
      Make sure to check back in here when you are done with your project or if you have other questions. I’m more than happy to help if I can.

If the speakers on your car has the Harman Kardon branding/logo, then chances are you need the optical converter. If this is the case, you might also want to watch this video from another DIY’er who used the optical converter for his W209.

      @@AutosNGizmos Thank you for the quick reply. None of my speakers show Harman Kardon sound system or labels. It is exactly like your car. Main harness with 2 antenna yellow and purple only. The car I have is 2007 C280 w203. I noticed in the original head unit where the main harness goes, to the left of the pins there is an orange piece of plastic with 2 connectors. That might be optical out put. but the speakers around the car do not say Harman Kardon for sure. What do you think?

    • @AutosNGizmos
      @AutosNGizmos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve re-watched the videos again to re-jog my memory. There are a few things you can try that might help:
      1) Most of these Android-based car stereo systems have a master volume buried under the firmware settings. Have a look around and see what it is set to. If you can’t find it, probably a good idea is to do a hard reset. There should be some instruction that came in the manual how to do this. Reboot then retest. If there is still no audio, proceed to #2 below.
      2) This second option, you will need a multi-meter so if you don’t have one, might be worthwhile to borrow one from a friend. On the back of the headunit, you will see a small (red) fuse and next to it is the ISO connector. This is where the headunit will output the all audio channels. For example, pins 9 and 11 are the Front Right ground and audio signals respectively. The pin-out information should be in the user manual that came with your headunit. While the headunit is plugged in and turned on to a radio station (but not mounted on the dash, use the probes on your multi-meter (use either Ohm or Voltage setting on the multimeter) to tap into pins 9 (black probe) and 11 (red probe) to check if you see any readings. If you see fluctuations in the reading, then it means the headunit is trying to send audio to the speakers. If you don’t see any readings, then there might be something wrong with the headunit so report this back to the seller. If you see fluctuations in the readings in the multi-meter, proceed to #3
      3) At this point we know the headunit system volume is correct and it is sending audio signals to the car. In this step, we need to make sure that the pin-outs on the wiring harness of the Android headunit match the pin-out of the connector that is in the car. My car has the MB Audio 20 so the website in the below url has the pin-out information. Make sure both pin-outs match. For example, pins 9 and 11 on the Android headunit should be connected to Pins 6 and 2 of the Car’s wiring harness. It is also worth making sure none of the pins are bent and there is good connectivity. Sometimes all it takes is the ground pin not connected properly and that is enough to make everything out of sorts.
      pinoutguide.com/Car-Stereo-Mercedes-Maybach-Smart/Smart_Audio_20_Quadlock_c_pinout.shtml
      That is all I can think of for now so I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

      Hi @r0ckoon, yes it should fit as I have other viewers install this on their c230k. However, it is best to confirm this with the seller. One thing I would note is that if your car has the Harman Kardon speakers, you might need to install a separate device to convert analogue to digital audio. But make sure to inform the seller what type of speaker you have.

      Hi there, I do this only as hobby, on my own car and during my free time. I haven’t done this as paid work.
      But IMO (assuming you don’t need a reverse camera), the most difficult part of this project is actually choosing the right headunit/product. Once you have the right headunit, and you have the slightest “DIY” gene in you (and the right tools of course as shown in 14:13), the work in the video becomes really straight forward.
      If after the above info and you still need assistance and you are based in Melbourne (Australia), happy to meet up in person after the lockdown and help you.

      @AutosNGizmos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alexander, The headunit in this video comes with a Canbus decoder (aka SWC module) so it’s already pre-configured to work with the steering wheel buttons. But I’ve read in the comments section of the products page that some people an unable to make the buttons work if they have the sports steering wheel.
      If you don’t have the sports steering wheel and you need to re-configure how the steering buttons behave, there is a “SWC” app under “Car Settings” which lets you do this. But the main thing is that you need to have a Canbus decoder compatible with the headunit before you can do any of this.
      I hope thats helpful. Cheers.

      Hi Suesan, this particular model has an 8 inch screen (measured diagonally) with 4GB ROM and 64GB RAM. Other dimensions advertised in the reseller’s product page are as follows: Height=119.85mm, Top Width=261.05mm, Botton Width=240.37.
      Whether or not it works (or will fit) on your 2006 C180k, depends what your current OEM stereo looks like as I’ve seen a few variations of them out there. You can confirm this directly with the reseller by providing them a photo of your current stereo.
      One other thing that you also need to take note of is whether your OEM car stereo has either: (1) Built-in GPS navigation or (2) Uses Harman-Kardon speakers. If either one applies to you, you will need to purchase an extra set of wiring harness. Again, you need to provide this info to the reseller so they can help you purchase the correct product.
      I hope this is helpful and good luck with your DIY! 👍

      With regards to the reverse camera, some reseller can bundle a reverse camera (extra cost) but may not necessarily be the best quality. In my case, I opted to get from a different reseller so I cant comment if the reverse camera from this headunit reseller is any good.

      If you get the analog to fibre optic converter, make sure you get the right type. There are at least three different types and which one is the right one for your car, depends on whether you have the sound system option (Harman-Kardon) and/or which audio gateway type in the car. The most risk-free solution is to use one of the "6m cable"-options (Kapud sell one of them) that bypasses the amplifier in the car and uses the amplifier within the Kapud unit. Not sure whether the latter will work well with the 2Ohm speakers of the Harman-Kardon system, though.
