    Coursea is a solid platform. Very good to get things started off. I'd say one must balance with standardised or industry certifications from Microsoft, Amazon, ITIL or CISCO. These are more recognised in the industry.

      Definitely so, Coursera alone, as any platform alone is not enough.

      Knowledge is better than degrees. Degrees opens the door and later your knowledge and most important thing your network and personal relations will makes you successful or not .The rest is a big lie that they teach you in universities. Businessmen never hires because of a degree but always because of a real experience

    Thank you for this video. As someone who uses both coursera and Udemy, I find coursera infinitely better and more legit than udemy. Plus the supplementary material that colleges offer on course ranks way better than the content on Udemy. Yet, coursera still is a tad restricted in terms of the type of disciplines it offers courses in.

    I discovered a lot of useful courses for SEO, digital marketing and hospitality. And as I already have experience in those spheres, I can say coursera is a good platform to improve your skills or study something totally new. It's a big plus for your CV and if you do everything properly, you will remember all information even after passing all tests.

      There are other considerations outside technical abilities. Are you disciplined, a good communicator, dependable, willing to go above and beyond, do you work well with others? When I think of employment and what potential employers look for often I'll go through several scenarios in my head to anticipate what kinds of non-traditional questions might be asked; that's being original, and that might be enough to stand out as a leader and someone they want on their team!

    The transition towards universities offering degrees via the Coursera platform represents an evolution in the level of rigour which matches that of the institutions' on-campus degrees. Some universities are moving to a performance-based admissions system instead of prior academic performance.

      yes definitely! There is a friend on mine who has done intuit specialization from coursera and it has landed him a good entry level remote job in book keeping. So coursera is great platform for trying new things without risks. Do check that intuit course, it has all the book keeping basics you need.

    What's your advice to someone whose working to become a software developer without experience? I'm currently taking a few courses through Coursera to become certified in hopes of landing an entry level position. But the perspective you've shared on certificates has me going back to the drawing board.

    • @DecisionForest
      @DecisionForest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I'd say doing courses is important as it keeps you up to date but courses alone will not land you a job. Nowadays companies are looking for experience first as there are so many data science / engineering candidates that have the keywords on their resume but they can't show that they can do the job. Even doing well on data science questions is not enough, you need to explain your process in a real world scenario. My best advice for any engineering job, if you don't have any experience, build your own project first (not a playground project). A real world scenario, deploy it and lead with that when you apply for jobs.

    I mean, there aren't really any downsides from coursera itself then, because the dilution of certification are like degrees, "since most people have one, they care more about experience". In my opinion anything you can do to add anything positive to your CV just makes sense. It doesn't mean that if everyone has a degree, they're useless, it's just basic economics, through no fault of the degree changing but the scarcity due to the elevation of competition.

    I started the Journalism course, so maybe a bit different. But im dubious of courseras usefulness in teaching an English related field the way they teach things. The course was mostly multiple choice questions with an open book, all that really tells you is that you can locate awnsers in a reading. Almost anyone could pass with the smallest amount of effort. Ive gotten 0 written feedback for my work, written discussions between classmates and a professor is essentially non existent. A point rubric alone is near useless, especially when a lot of people might just quickly fill in bubbles without really reading your work. There was very little in depth discussion, and no place to ask questions like youd get with a normal lecture. I wouldn't reccomend you take any Arts or Humanities cources on Coursera and i cant speak to STEM fields.
