I agree on the fact that MOOC certificates such as from Udemy etc. have zero face value for the market, what really matters is which skills you personally learn and mostly how you're able to apply them in your job or side hustle / personal project
individualy they have zero face value... but if you add them to a portfolio of degrees, certifications, certificates, diplomas, awards, and acheivments: it can be used as leverage.
I disagree that the CFA is top tier certificate for business professionals; maybe, for finance professionals but business is more than finance field; you forgot to mention the CQF for quants or the FRM for risk professionals. These are top tier certificate but at the end of the day none of them will guarantee anyone to get a high paying job.
Micro education is the future - functional skill over general knowledge will yield more opportunities to add value in the workforce today and tomorrow.
But anything counts as project management experience - even managing a construction site qualifies, so I actually encourage students to explore this as an option.

Not everybody will be accepted into a specific on-site course offered by target business schools even if the applicant can afford it (e.g., HBS Executive Education). At HBS ExEd for instance, they reject quite an amount of applications if the applicants neither are qualified nor do not fit into the overall profile of that cohort. In some cases, they do offer alternative options instead.
Yes fully agree! The top business schools definitely also offer some very prestigious and selective executive education programs. What I had in mind were these online certificates everyone can sign up for for a couple of thousand $$$ that are currently being heavily promoted by many of these schools. Best! H
Great video and analysis as always. Yes I have never heard of anyone at the EM or Project Leader level in Mgmt Consulting getting the PMP. I think all the major firms; MBB, the Big 4, and tier 2 firms have well developed training departments that teach all you need to know to continue to be successful in consulting. I would venture to say if you have been at the EM/PL level or higher that will get you more exposure in follow-on jobs then a PMP. I have seen PMP's be important in Software development, IT Hardware development, Aerospace/Defense, and Government Acquisitions. Thanks.

A lot of employers have a training budget which allows you to choose whatever you want to pursue and I feel it would help a lot if those of us in our early careers had a razor-focused plan to succeed. I for one work in a bank but in a non-finance capacity and after watching your video have decided to pursue CFA L1. Thank you once again!
I got the PMP. Even if it doesn't help with career (though I expect it will), it helps with my knowledge and confidence. Working on a valuable career specific certification now, but don't rule out scrum master or other agile related certification. GMAT, GRE, etc. are just tests which I know I would do well on, but certifications based on only test scores aren't valuable to the internal and external customers I deal with. They like to see experience and practical application skills be a part of certifications.
@@manu03_ It can help. Softer skills often help engineers, but they can often also see the benefits of project planning. If you are considering consulting or see your career may need it then focusing on your state's professional engineering certification may be better. Then go for PMP. Engineers are sometimes considered to just have technical skills, so if you want to move toward management I would go for PMP then later perhaps MBA. Just my opinion and I am not an engineer. Just have known many.
I have both a PMP and a Certified Scrum Master. The PMP is attractive to employers and has helped me get ahead but the CSM is useful in many practical applications. I recommend getting both for those interested.
CASE and GMAT are not certifications but scores and both are very regional - GMAT for USA and CASE for Germany. I don't think anyone looks at certifications in consulting but for your own practice, I suggest going through SCRUM master and 6 Sigma. PMP might be handy for big corporate / governmental projects. Best not to mention MOOC certificates in your profile. Makes you look like newbie :)
Anyone who wants to do a CFA, should do the CFI courses beforehand or parallel. The CFI, is easier to obtain and much cheaper, so you will have one of their 6 certificates and you will have done CFA preparation, as a lot of the learning material is similar. The CFA is still much harder and you will need extra prep time but, doesn’t hurt to have the more specific CFI certificates.
Thank you for your video. It gives me some idea as to the worth of my CFA (Level 1) completion. I took it because I was involved in a number of startups a decade ago and I wanted to know about company valuation and investment principles. It was very tough but I managed to clear and pass all the 10 subjects. I remembered there were so many questions and the exams took a long time. Yes, you are right, you will not be awarded the qualification even if you passed all the exams but lack any experience in banking or finance. The questions were framed as though you are already comfortable with making investment calculations. They came from all angles!!

I know that those courses are not the same as CFA but information about the CFA is widely available as opposed to the courses from the CFI and CISI and therefore I would love to hear your opinion on the knowledge one may acquire and it's value in the industry from learning the courses offered by these two institutions.

IIBA has a standalone certification for Data Anallytics, called CBDA.. CBAP is ok but not recommended Any Google certification is good for the topic you've chosen, but again, it shows you know the basics. Doesn't mean you're an expert in that area

Good video. However, the only certification that make sense here is the PMP. The CFA relates to banking and is almost the equivalent of an MBA. The CASE, GMAT (those are test not « certification » BTW) and other are useful in places (country) where education is not standardized across their education system such as in the US. Furthermore, certification was more relevant in the 70s, 80s, and 90s when going to university was not a requirement. Today, those certifications are mostly required by zealous senior people that want their new employees to do the same as they did when they got their first job. But since most do not think much nowadays, we have to follow that never ending requirements trend…😂 Furthermore, here where I live, having a scrum master or six sigma certification can help you get jobs, but most of the time you will need specialized work experience to back them up. I have both and they do not require a lot of time or cost much, except for the black belt that is around 10k$.
Does PMP still have actual practical value other than just a certificate that one shows off? I did my PMP a few years back and quite honestly I thought that almost 90% of the course content was just pure common sense.....with just around 10% or so being actual mathematical concepts and even those aren't too difficult at all. Imo PMP is just PMI's way of getting money out of people's pocket by "explaining" basic concepts using unnecessarily jargon filled language to make it appear as if the cert holder has learnt something really new. An even more ridiculous cert that I have seen is Scrum Master......just basic stuff sold for a good chunk of money. What is really needed is actual hands on experience and just a little bit of concept brushing....insted of wasting crazy money to get officially certified......at least in these 2 certifications.

Honestly, it will be tough. You could try to work your way up like starting at smaller consulting firms and after some years of consulting experience, try to make the switch. But right after university with no notable experience and lack of academic achievement, you will have a hard time with MBB.

It requires a lot of prep and an extra year of classes at least in Pennsylvania, and i was wondering if it would be worth the time and energy compared to the CFA. I know they are two different areas of work, but I have worked under CPAs in the AWM industry as well. Is this certification applicable if i would ever want to pivot out of public later in my career?
Hi Veronika, both are important! Though managerial accounting/ controlling comes rather naturally to most. Financial accounting is what many people struggle with.
Hi! Purely for career progression it should not be needed to do both an MBA and then a CFA. If you indeed want to do both, definitely will not hurt to start with a CFA, as you can do the first level(s) straight out of university, while you will need work experience for MBAs. Cheers! Heinrich

People putting a 'paid for by employer' business school certificate on their resume are a joke. Sometimes they really argue that they did indeed an MBA to people without knowledge on MBAs. On the GMAT: 25 years ago GMAT above 660 was very good. Ivey league GMAT was around 670 back then; This was before people massively started training on the GMAT and sometimes it was nt computerized yet. And one couldn't make many efforts to test.
Unfortunate that certification in business is so far from those with IT such that for example if you need to set up a Google Cloud Architecture system a Google Certification actually gets you the job. For investment banking it's still based on how high you rank in a target undergrad or post grad program. It's also a function of how the candidate would be respected on the field ie your dealing with Ivy league graduates and you need to gain their respect and even lead them when likely your even younger than they are in this case a certificate may not do it for you.
The existence of Scrum Masters which are no acomplished softwares developers themself is the root of everything wrong with this framework. Just read the agile principles and skip all the other BS.

Hi Parisa, my opinion on this is that online certificates (also from e.g., Harvard) at the moment might help you to learn new skills / build knowledge. Though they are not yet highly valued by most employers. Of course, perceptions about this might change over time. Best, Heinrich

For six sigma, try to get it from a CSSC or a ASQ certified provider. There is an other organization that also certifies but can’t remember it. A CSSC backed certification would be the easiest to get.

Honestly, it will be tough. You could try to work your way up like starting at smaller consulting firms and after some years of consulting experience, try to make the switch. But right after university with no notable experience and lack of academic achievement, you will have a hard time with MBB.

I am a double major in Accounting and Finance with a minor in business consulting; although i am not fully committed to either role for a career choice, i was wondering what are your thoughts on the CPA? It requires a lot of prep and an extra year of classes at least in Pennsylvania, and i was wondering if it would be worth the time and energy compared to the CFA. I know they are two different areas of work, but I have worked under CPAs in the AWM industry as well. Is this certification applicable if i would ever want to pivot out of public later in my career?

Hi Veronika, both are important! Though managerial accounting/ controlling comes rather naturally to most. Financial accounting is what many people struggle with.

Hi! Purely for career progression it should not be needed to do both an MBA and then a CFA. If you indeed want to do both, definitely will not hurt to start with a CFA, as you can do the first level(s) straight out of university, while you will need work experience for MBAs. Cheers! Heinrich

Less well known in business
People putting a 'paid for by employer' business school certificate on their resume are a joke. Sometimes they really argue that they did indeed an MBA to people without knowledge on MBAs.
On the GMAT: 25 years ago GMAT above 660 was very good. Ivey league GMAT was around 670 back then; This was before people massively started training on the GMAT and sometimes it was nt computerized yet. And one couldn't make many efforts to test.
Unfortunate that certification in business is so far from those with IT such that for example if you need to set up a Google Cloud Architecture system a Google Certification actually gets you the job. For investment banking it's still based on how high you rank in a target undergrad or post grad program. It's also a function of how the candidate would be respected on the field ie your dealing with Ivy league graduates and you need to gain their respect and even lead them when likely your even younger than they are in this case a certificate may not do it for you.

What's the difference between CFI and CFA?
The existence of Scrum Masters which are no acomplished softwares developers themself is the root of everything wrong with this framework. Just read the agile principles and skip all the other BS.

For six sigma, try to get it from a CSSC or a ASQ certified provider. There is an other organization that also certifies but can’t remember it. A CSSC backed certification would be the easiest to get.
