Hello from Canada, beautiful sunny morning time for terror. I learned decades ago that daylight is the best time for me to read/ hear these stories. I had been reading ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ in the last fall. As I was working at home, six o’clock was the cut of time and I would grab a coffee and my book, sit down on the couch for awhile. The darkness comes very quickly in the fall and that damm book was so scary that I could not read it after dark. Strangely, it seemed so childish during the daylight, so the only way I could finish it was by the 15-20 minutes before the street lights came on. Always planned to re-read it but the thoughts of how eerily it crept into my psyche always makes me back away. The book ‘Ghost Stories’ was the only book I have ever had to walk away from. Didn’t even finish the first two chapters. ❤️🇨🇦

Kathy Hopper. I hope you enjoy and experience the full creepiness of ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’. I am not into the modern blood, guts and gore of a lot of modern horror/ghost stories. I like the quiet one that live rent free in your mind long after you finish the book or movie. Peter Straub wrote the book ‘Ghost Story’, the one I could not read. Long gone but not forgotten, anything by Dennis Wheatley or,of course H.P. Lovecraft. Before Christoper Fowler started writing his detective novels, he wrote several supernatural books. My favourite was/is ‘Spanky’. His collection of short stories in this vine are excellent. The one about underground parking makes me cringe every time I use it. For the visual, go on line and look up the Japanese ghost story movies. If you like I can recommend some Russian ones on their movie site.
I'm in Oregon right now and its 106. I needed a distraction thank you. I haven't had a chance to comment recently but I have been listening. Love your reading and I love that they are usually very old.

I love silent horror genre haunted house stories like this. Their slow pace does not trigger sensory overload but keep me grounded and excited all the way.
What a treat! It’s 107 here in California today, but this story transported me to a cold, stormy night in a strange old house, and for almost an hour I forgot how hot I was and just enjoyed this marvelous tale of revenge….blissful indeed!

This feels like a story that would work very well as an audiodrama. The creaking of the house, the roaring fire, distant rain, and uncomfortable silences as the narrator allows thoughts to sink into the other man's mind. It'd be great.

May I recommend a variant of the story with rain downpouring faded into the background as ambient, as well as the mentioned fireplace, as they're a thematic element purposefully incorporated in the story by the author
I liked the sound. Subtle. Someone on a grinder or wood chipper next door…. possibly….. wind…. Libby said she heard something that sounded like a giant mosquito, as I adjusted the headphones.

Dammit Ian how do you keep finding these obscure gems? I'm fairly well read as far as the genre goes but you repeatedly seem to surprise me with these stories I've never come across. This one was different quite eerie, loved the atmosphere.
My thanks for this one. A good old-fashioned haunted house story. The ending was not a complete surprise, but the tale was nicely resolved. Very well read, too. I noticed that at a certain time -- I've forgotten exactly when -- you began to feature a lot of stories from Weird Tales magazine. So tell me, did you have to make the traditional deal with Old Scratch to acquire the complete set? Not that I'm judging, you understand...

Good story, well written and well told. But the ending wasn't much. We knew it the whole time, so it shouldn't have been played off like it was a big reveal.
