I know it’s a conversation podcast, but moments like Sean saying Jonathan Bailey has “very little singing experience” when he was performing in the west end version of Les Miz as a child, and recently won an Olivier award, reveals the casual lack of curiosity in the subject of the conversation that periodically comes up on episodes of the show. It’s one thing when it’s a more casual podcast glosses over basic information about a central actor, but it’s frustrating when one of the most prominent podcasts that discusses current releases whiffs like this.
Wait. Did you all just say Jonathan Bailey has very little singing experience and “pulled it off”? He has a Lawrence Oliver Award for Company. Look up his Last 5 Years audition. You won’t regret it…Jeff Goldblum also did a jazz night every Wednesday at Rockwell in Los Angeles for years. Also a singer.
To his credit, Malcolm Washington in no way comes across as a nepobaby, but instead seems like a very thoughtful person who is passionate about film. Great interview.
The movie of Chicago rules. It's legitimately funny/fun and it is one most well cast movies. Part of it is that it is Bob Fosse influenced and he was very good at making musicals for people who don't like musicals.
Charles Dutton had the life and death desperation getting that 'Piano' and piece of 'Land' that JD Washington wasn't even close to capturing. I didn't care for this version of 'The Piano Lesson' and a lot of it had to do with the direction, Lead Performance and focus. There wasn't a focus and unity of the ensemble/toope that is essential. His lack of experience is in the film.
I don’t think you guys will get the animal part because you aren’t a group that gets seen down upon in this country. As a gay Latino, I related to how they felt like outcast and people trying to make them feel less than. “What brings people together is to give them a really good enemy.” You guys will never feel that threat.
So I totally get not remembering the animal piece but it’s really important to the whole point of Wicked. Sad that it doesn’t seem like yall appreciate what the movie is trying to say about the subjugation of marginalized people.
This feels like a really odd, review with two white, straight folks that just aren’t speaking to the power that Cynthia Erivo in particular channeled in this movie. I normally love The Big Picture but this was a big miss of an episode. I loved this movie and as a queer married man, it was exactly what I needed in this moment, to find strength in these trying times. My favorite movie of the year.
I doubt it'd win BP without a Screenplay or Director nomination, but getting 3-4 Oscars would be a huge win for a movie anyway which wasn't even being put in the BP 10 until a month ago. It's highly likely to win Costumes, Production Design and has a decent shot at winning Supporting Actress and maybe one other tech category...Makeup? Sound? VFX? (Not the best contender but are there any strong competitors this year?}
I doubt it will win BP if La La Land didn't which was an even more beloved musical at the time of release. Will be interesting how the awards shows handle the back to back years though, haven't really had anything like this since Lord Of The Rings I guess
I'm right there with you. I've been hating on cgi in live action movies for 30 years. It will never not look ridiculous to me and I am continually flummoxed that the culture has by and large just accepted and embraced it. To say nothing of green screen, digital cameras, modern lighting and color grading.
Wicked part 2 is more intense and would have more strong acting performances from ariana and cynthia and I'd say its gonna be an even stronger awards contender than part 1.

This episode might set a record for most times saying "I.P."
Very happy the interviews have begun to make their way to video!
I'm actually pretty surprised that La La Land wasn't on either of their lists.
Really love the pod, but gotta say I'm kinda disappointed there was no time spent to hold space for the lyrics of defying gravity...

So appropriate the Spotify logo is Sean’s only light in the void.
Head of Content flex.
“ Princess Pilled Girly Girl” is the most iconic way to be described 🪄🦄👑💗
It’s cool Juliet is on, I always like her commentary on stuff but don’t really listen to her regular podcasts.
Yes to Juliet!! ☺️
Sean, you can just say you don’t like retconning The Wizard of Oz.
Who does????????????
Tarantino loves Music and Lyrics, so you're not alone, Juliet.
Sean, older people go to uni all the time, a good quarter of students at my uni are at least 10 years older than me
I was so distracted by Ariana's dead shark eyes
How is this even being considered for Best Picture when Dune 2 came out… or the brutalist… even Anora… man…
It's typical. La La land etc. won't win but it's good for the show
They want ariana grande at the oscars duh
we love the big picture.
Cool avi

This was a bummer to watch, wicked was great.
Not a musical but anyone remember August Rush? Great Robin Williams villain…
It’s funny because I’ve heard the Ozdust Ballroom scene was the best…

Sean's wife and child don't actually exist right?
Sean mispronounced Adele Dazeem.
Can't imagine sitting to watch Wicked part 1 for 2 hours and 40 minutes
It honestly flew by for me
Would Scott Pilgrim count as a muscial? Because if it does then that might be my favorite of the millenium.
im not sure
It is a movie revolving around music so I say yes but it’s arguably more of a comic book movie than a musical

And trying to literally take away their voice and cage them
Came here to say this, frustrated with this commentary

I thougt it was 'fine' until they went to Oz. From there it was a godamn masterpiece!

Agreed, I feel like they totally missed the point and resonance of Wicked. No depth and real interrogation at all
@@airborne657thank you for understanding and validating my feelings. It feels good to not be alone in my feelings.
It would be insane for a known Part 1 (where Part 2 is coming the next year) to win Best Picture.

It'll win GG for Best Musical or Comedy slightly beating The Martian 2

I thought the movie was ass. And as visually atrocious from beginning to end as the previews suggested
I don't like any of these movies that basically looks like you're watching a video game. Guess I'm a caveman.

Once again, I hate how they go over each other's Top 5 lists before doing the show. It wouldn't hurt to have some spontaneity and surprise here.
Start your own podcast and do that…
The movie punches you with its message. It's insulting and cringe
Ouch dude. Actually cool critique tho.
Crazy Rich Asians was a really cool movie, indeed, love some fluff done right
Absolutley devastating that in an episode discussing the great movie musicals of the 21st century that the words “La La Land” were never uttered.
It was about musical adaptations
@@crfstaleyMore than half of the films mentioned were original films created for the screen.
