I've refinished a few oak writing desks from that era. They are such lovely pieces. I always wonder, in that age where people really wrote letters, especially through world war II, what those desks quietly witnessed. Thank goodness this one's family came to it's senses and sent it to you for rescue! The oak grain always seems to have been obscured in that era, and I speculate that oak was considered a utilitarian wood then, being more available than it is now. Really a lovely job on this little desk. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Hi Pamela. I have had a few people cry when they come to collect the finished piece, in a good way obviously.😂 Its mainly when its a sentimental piece thats been passed down through the family and often has little Monetary value. Its probably my favourite part of what i do.😀
Love the mix of flat swan and quarter sawn oak in that piece. The original maker knew what he was doing. I really like the two-tone and would never have thought of it myself. It really highlights the grain. Great job and glad I found your channel!

Lovely work as usual. Not so keen on the dark finish on the top and frame but I like it on the handles and decorations. These are such useful pieces of furniture and so well sized for smaller rooms. Ideal for working from home too- you can lift up the lid at ‘home-time’ and leave work for the day.
Beautiful and I love the black accent on the trim. 100 years old and used to hold tools. Seriously, beautiful work. Most folks would have put it in a landfill, which is one of the best things about RESTORING old peices. Definately gave it a new life!!

Been thinking about posting some of my restorations, when I read some of the comments that people make, I think again. I guess the key is to focus on the positive, and ignore the negative.
Hi Suzanne. My advice would be to just do it. I find that most people are very kind and supportive and you’ll be surprised at how interested in different ideas, techniques and formats they are. At first I used to get quite put out about some of the comments but even if someone doesn’t like the particular piece you’ve done they are mostly constructive with their feedback. The few that are just simply rude and unkind I just now either ignore or simply say “thanks for your opinion” occasionally I can’t help myself and I respond with a very sarcastic comment😂😂 I personally love seeing other people who are passionate about restoration/restyling and their different approaches. Please don’t let the very small minority stop you. 😀😀👍❤️
Fabulous! My husband was given a 1930s oak bureau as a 21st birthday gift from his parents. He is now 65 and it's looking a bit tired. I'm pretty good at revamping old stuff so I'll show him your vid to see if he'll trust me to have a go. I'll get him to help me too.
I have to agree with some others on here, I don't like the 2 tone, but it is a superb job, really lovely video to watch... love that you didn't paint the hinges, absolutely the right thing to do. Would it have been better to have lacquer them to stop them oxidising/dulling over time?

A beautiful desk and you did a beautiful job of refinishing it. The piece was well worth the job. I would have stuck with all one color stain and gone slightly darker around the details. The detail needed to be accentuated. The dark stain was too far out of the color family., You did do a beautiful job on it.!
My Grandfather had a writing bureau very similar to the one you restored. It passed to my father when he died in 1980. Then my father passed away in 2011 and my mother decided to keep it for herself. This year mum passed away and as I have been sorting through her belongings, I have wondered what to do with the bureau. After watching your restoration, I have decided to find someone to restore it for me here in Australia. Thanks for showing the finished result. Hopefully I can resurrect my grandfather's beloved bureau to keep it in the family as an heirloom.
After seeing this, I went right into hubby's office and took a look at my Dad's childhood writing desk. Hubby uses it for his laptop, I may have to abscond with it, and start a new project!! After seeing this, I feel so inspired!

Gorgeous!! Thank you thank you for the lessons. I am happy that you did not paint it because I am refinishing a secretary and want to keep the natural wood colors. I learned so much! I do not plan on ever doing this again so the cost of purchasing the sander and shop vac and spray paint equipment is a no for me. I’m a bit overwhelmed by my pigeon holes! I'll take old refurbished furniture any day over this cheap stuff today in the stores ..dovetail joints are the best. My grandfather was a master carpenter and I still have several of his pieces from the 1950s. ❤️..no one in the family wanted this furniture.....he even made a child size dining buffet and doll bed when I was 6!!!!!
Really beautiful restoration. I'm a professional painter and I would recommend upgrading your sprayer if you plan on spraying the finishes. It certainly looks great sprayed vs brushing but as someone with a trained eye I can still spot the difference between a lower end and higher end sprayed finish during your close ups in the reveal. Sounds like you're still fairly new so its not my intent to criticize, but rather to help you make those small improvements that really make a difference.
Amazing work, I love that he is able to understand that these antique pieces should maintain the integrity of the wood color and not painted with new colors. Just beautiful!

Thanks, I tend not to lacquer them as they yellow over time. It’s pretty easy to simply polish them up every so often 😀👍

My Grandfather had a writing bureau very similar to the one you restored. It passed to my father when he died in 1980. Then my father passed away in 2011 and my mother decided to keep it for herself. This year mum passed away and as I have been sorting through her belongings, I have wondered what to do with the bureau. After watching your restoration, I have decided to find someone to restore it for me here in Australia. Thanks for showing the finished result. Hopefully I can resurrect my grandfather's beloved bureau to keep it in the family as an heirloom.
After seeing this, I went right into hubby's office and took a look at my Dad's childhood writing desk. Hubby uses it for his laptop, I may have to abscond with it, and start a new project!! After seeing this, I feel so inspired!

Gorgeous!! Thank you thank you for the lessons. I am happy that you did not paint it because I am refinishing a secretary and want to keep the natural wood colors. I learned so much! I do not plan on ever doing this again so the cost of purchasing the sander and shop vac and spray paint equipment is a no for me. I’m a bit overwhelmed by my pigeon holes! You did it so well I may watch this several times! Thank you!!

I'll take old refurbished furniture any day over this cheap stuff today in the stores ..dovetail joints are the best. My grandfather was a master carpenter and I still have several of his pieces from the 1950s. ❤️..no one in the family wanted this furniture.....he even made a child size dining buffet and doll bed when I was 6!!!!!

Really beautiful restoration. I'm a professional painter and I would recommend upgrading your sprayer if you plan on spraying the finishes. It certainly looks great sprayed vs brushing but as someone with a trained eye I can still spot the difference between a lower end and higher end sprayed finish during your close ups in the reveal. Sounds like you're still fairly new so its not my intent to criticize, but rather to help you make those small improvements that really make a difference.
