  • Professor Alice Sullivan, who is Professor of Sociology in the Social Research Institute at UCL, is a quantitative social scientist who has expertise in using and working with large and very large quantitative datasets. In this video case Professor Sullivan discusses with Professor Jo Phoenix what ‘gender critical’ means, why she fought the ONS (Office for National Statistics) for retention of the female/male sex category on the Census 2021 and some of the challenges she faced in doing so (7:25).
In the final part of the interview (approximately 18 minutes) both Profs discuss some of the chilling effect experienced by individuals who hold (or are thought to hold) gender critical beliefs in British Universities today and the relationship between activism, politics, politicking and knowledge production.

As a retired trauma therapist trained in medical iatrogenics, I totally relate to everything discussed in this vlog, especially in the context of 'Galileo's Middle Finger' and data collection in the dystopian, post-modern intersectionality of life, the universe, and everything.

Having both sex and gender ID on the census would actually be really helpful for gathering info about trans numbers in the UK. Knowing the real numbers could help for funding, etc. It just makes sense to gather both stats.

It is nonsense. There is no such thing as gender outside a book of grammar. Anyone who believes they are in the wrong body is psychologically unwell and needs psychological help. A man who wants to impersonate a woman cosmetically, with long hair, a lot of make-up, nail varnish, female clothes, etc may do so, as long as he is not claiming to be a woman, eg if he has committed rape and expects to be placed in a woman's prison, or insists on walking around naked as an intact fully grown male in female changing areas. Or, indeed, threatens or perpetrates violence towards Terfs.

1:03 As a GNC trans woman, I also believe that sex matters and I am treated very different on account of my transsexual body

Gender is not a set of norms and expectations, incredibly reductive

No trans person I have ever met claims that sex isn't real. The idea that this makes you "gender critical" is ridiculous.
