Yes, in Wickenburg. Merv was very nice to people there. He also owned a small Hilton off Scottsdale Rd. He lit the Christmas tree every year, and I believe played the piano a little, and sang. I really wanted to meet him, but was apprehensive after the Denny Terrio thing. Nonetheless, Mr. Griffin was an impressive businessman who killed Trump in Atlantic City. Merv was also a pallbearer for Ronald Reagan.
I did know he was gay, but when I first heard, I was astonished because he would have been one of the last person I would have suspected was gay. I grew up watching his show regularly and always had the highest respect for him.
He was an altar boy at St Matthews in downtown San Mateo CA. Most of us knew he was gay, just a shame he had to hide it all. He went to school with my Dads older brother. The neighborhood back then, were Italian, Croatian, etc. where communities worked together as a big family! The church is no longer there, due to not earthquake safe. He sang in the choir, where my Grandma would tell me stories of him. I also had a 3rd cousin who did well in Hollywood TV side, who lost his life to aids. He was an identical twin, who lost his brother to a motorcycle accident when they were both starting out, from Delano CA.
I don’t think it’s the public business to know about someone’s sexual life. Once we know the information what do we plan to do with it? It’s sad how others wanted and have outed people because of it.
Merv Griffin never owned the Beverly Hills Hotel. He owned the Beverly Hilton... Also, I don't think his homosexuality was much of a secret during his lifetime.
Mr. Griffin was a true pioneer in the Worlds of Television, Gaming, and Entertainment. Merv was conservative about his private life as times were different. It worked for him. He did not owe anyone an explanation for his personal choice. Thanks for sharing. This is terrific work!
I didn't know he was gay until I stumbled on his autobiography called...'Out of the Closet'. A fascinating book about not only Merv but many Hollywood personalities also.
I remember being shocked in 1991, when Merv Griffin was sued for palimony by a male horse trainer. He told that Griffin's public romance with actress Eva Gabor was a cover.
Eva and Merv were very close friends long before they started going out together. In fact, he was a close friend of the Gabor familyhe was on his talk show a lot. Whenever she was on there, they were always joking and laughing and kidding around. And he jokingly mocked her Hungarian accent as well. They started going out together after her fifth and final marriage had broken up. That's the only time that I ever watched his talk show. Also, back in 1980, Merv interviewed both Eva and Zsa Zsa in their homes. He interviewed Eva first, which I saw because Eva was the idol of my youth. But I didn't see the one with Zsa Zsa. Four years later, back in 1984, he did a two-part show from a tennis tournament down in Palm Beach, Florida; and both Eva and Zsa Zsa were with him during the first segment. And the next year, 1985, both Eva and Merv went to this charity dinner, which was also in Palm Beach as well, in honor of both Prince Charles and Princess Diana. If he chose to stay in the closet, that was his choice. He never talked about his private life. He kept his private life private. Therefore, I don't care to know whether or not he was gay.
I’ll forever remember Merv now by this quote: “I’m a quarter sexual, I’ll try anything for a quarter.” Considering his wealth in life, it sounds like their might be some truth to that.
Merv Griffin was a legend that transcends time! Sexuality was so misunderstood and under ground. Merv was himself, he always let his freak flag fly and people loved him for that!
In 1950 Merv recorded "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" with Freddy Matin's orchestra. He was the pianist/boy singer with the band. "Coconuts" sold three million copies.
I grew up with the Merv Griffin show as a kid. I am 52 now, it would've been great if Merv could have lived openly and happily BUT such was the nature of the times.
