  • The Thermostat finally went out on the car after 50k miles. This has been a common issue with the LGX motor and lots of people were wondering how to fix it. Took the opportunity to make the video to help out! Overall it was not too hard but its not that easy.

    Helpful, time saving tip for those doing this... replace the Coolant temp sensor when you do the thermostat. The temp sensor is right next to the thermostat and commonly goes out on these cars. It is a VERY inexpensive item (about $13 dollars). I have heard of many people just doing the thermostat and then having to pull everything apart again because the sensor was bad. Do the thermostat and the sensor while you have everything apart... save yourself the headache and time wasted. When it comes to cars, I live by the motto "Do it right or do it twice."

      Thanks jus happen to my car twice in 1 month but I do gotta question I read that it could be the fact that low coolant and sensor doesn’t pick up on the amount so it doesn’t read ? So fill both reservoirs up then see if same problem occurs that’s what I read not saying it’s true

      @@RCCamaro man the others i looked for were no where near this. Look, my car overheats. the coolant in the tank boils. the air goes in and out, but the heat works. the sensor stays reading COLD until the car overheats. we just put some stopleak in it and ran it again. Noticed there was no leak, but it ran hot. I remember Autozone's reading telling me I need a new thermostat replacement. So, does that sound like the ideal situation where the bad thermostat would cause the vehicle to overheat?

    • @RCCamaro
      @RCCamaro  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KalvinKosha I definitely appreciate that as it's a long video but I do my best so thank you. But did the over heating randomly start? Or did you do a flush? The car shouldn't overheat as the fan should stay on at any temp. But replacing the thermostat and the sensor are never bad ideas. It will just rule those out as issues. Just make sure you burp the system to get any air out of the engine

    If you remove the metal tube above that hard to reach bolt head, the hard to reach bolt head is a straight shot, much easier and no need for a u-joint swivel. Only one bolt to remove the tube, then the tube pulls right out. It also makes it easier to remove and install the stat housing. At 10:32 the tube is the metal one with the "Y" connection.

    Thanks for making this video to see what the job actually looks like. My LGX CT6 is doing the same thing intermittently the last couple of days so I ordered the sensor. I'm perplexed as to why you didn't just change it while you had it apart since it's a $15 part?!? I'm just going to do both and call it a day. Great tip on the 10mm u-joint socket! You said you've had your intake off multiple times, do you replace the intake o-rings or have you been reusing them? Any issues throwing codes due to air leaks?

    • @RCCamaro
      @RCCamaro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't change the sensor as I need the car the next day and the part was going to be a week out for some random reason. But that socket will save your life especially on other parts of the car too. You are able to reuse the gasket multiple times. Just double check them to make sure they are not cracked or chipped. I haven't had any codes for vacuum leaks

    • @YoshiV819
      @YoshiV819 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RCCamaro ordered the socket already. I consulted the GM service documentation for this condition and it goes back to DTC P0128. The DTC is run each ignition cycle to monitor thermostat performance. It checks to see if the coolant temperature matches a calculated target based on ambient temperature after enough time has passed for the engine to reach steady state operation. If the DTC fails the temperature gauge defaults to cold, fan is commanded high and the A/C is commanded off. The MIL may not be illuminated on the first failure. The most probable cause is a stuck thermostat. If your car is still behaving the sensor might be fine. I'll probably do both while I'm in there. How did your intake valves look? Any carbon build up?

    • @RCCamaro
      @RCCamaro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YoshiV819 oh yea they are bad haha didn't jump on the catch can fast enough but I'm planning to clean them once I hit 60k. If you have the ability to clean them I could. Might as well since you have the intake off. Just be careful not to drop anything into the cylinder haha

      That I'm not sure on a i haven't heard of this happening as often in the 4 cylinder cars. But that being said I've heard it happen often with the 6 and 8s so could just be a part issue with gm.

      First off thanks for watching! Appriciate you taking the time but also glad it helped you out in some way. I did not use anything outside of what was provided in the box of the new thermostat and housing. It came with new bolts and gasket for the block side. If I remember correctly, there should be a gasket on the plastic 90 degree that connects to it. I didn't replace it as it was in great shape. If it's broken or was lost I would get another gasket but a putting a bead of sealant could work until you get the gasket.

    Hi, thank you for this video. It definitely helped but we are still running into issues and hoped your insight could help. We have changed the thermostat and the thermostat sensor on our 2018 Camaro and after completion, disconnected the negative battery and let rest. Turned the car on and it seemed to correct the issue of not reading the thermostat temp and the needle going back to where it should be. However, after 10 minutes or so, the reading goes back to - - and the needle goes back to “C”. We are completely stumped, any idea of what this could be from?

    • @RCCamaro
      @RCCamaro  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that is interesting. A few things that I can think of that it could be is faulty thermostat or sensor. Could be air in the system and could be throwing the car off. But if it's not throwing a code (which if it was the sensor it would be that) then the thermostat could be faulty (which unfortunately happens). I would double check to make sure that the sensor connection is completely plugged in and there isn't any cut edges that could cause a short. If not then that's a tough one. I'll have to research and see what else that would cause that issue

    • @ajf4693
      @ajf4693 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The procedure is as follows.
      In order to count the coolant temp has to be under 104F and intake manifold temp between 36-90F before turning on the car open the hood and let the car idle for more than 2 minutes with accessories off.
      After the idle step close the hood and go on to drive part throttle (go easy on accelerator) at a speed of 43-50 mph for 16 minutes.
      Then accelerate to 55 mph for 2 minutes after let go of accelerator 15 seconds do not touch accelerator, clutch or brakes let it coast.
      Stop the vehicle and let it idle for 2 minutes, then turn it off and don’t mess with the car for 45 minutes.

    • @RCCamaro
      @RCCamaro  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @RCCamaro

      If your fans are not turning off it could be the fuse or the fans need to be replaced. The big symptom of the thermostat or sensor is the fans saying on after the car is off. I would check the fuse first. If fuse is good it is most likely the fan. If the fan is good, could be air in the system and it needs to be burped.
