You have no idea how happy I am that you made a video about Grimmer. What a surprise. Most people just talk about Johan (which is deserved) but I always felt that the entire cast of Monster is just so damn good. Urusawa just somehow has the ability to make the most despicable characters but also the nicest and purest. His characters just seem so oddly realistic. It’s like he can hit every spectrum of human characteristics.
You could honestly make an analysis for half of the cast in monster, urawawa is crazy good at not only making characters so likeable in such a short amount of time, but also character development.

Some suggest that was his original plan but he stumbled on the book again finding out that it was just a memory. So he look to his roots and found out his mother wanted to vengeance to franz bonaparta
Johan never had an identity. His mother raised them both as "Anna" to conceal the presence of the twins. She raised Johan to avenge her and his father, and she left them abandoned when she got the chance to do so. Nina/Anna is just as a monster, but the monster in her died when she lost her memories and got raised as Nina Fortner. When she is put into hypnosis, her Monster comes out again, and she was not in Kinderheim 511. So having the memories of what happened in Pray is was made them monsters.
Usually the main protagonist is the antithesis of the antagonist, but not Monster. Grimmer is the opposite of Johan. He went through the transformation Johan underwent through but he took a different path in the end. The dark & the light. The nihilist & the pessimist. The Monster & the Magnificent Steiner.
Sorry, but the "He went through the transformation Johan underwent" part made me laugh so hard, because it was clearly stated that Kinderheim 511 had nothing to do with Johan's monstrosity, one character even stated that he was already a monster before Kinderheim 511 if I remember correctly
I'd say he's less of a contrast to johan and more the antithesis to roberto, i mean hell we even find out he was his friend and knew his name. I wonder how it would've turned out if roberto met grimmer.
Any mature reader or viewer knows how cringe Johan is. Nihilism is itself a great ideology but those teens who make it their weapon of argument are nothing but cringe. The older you get the more you realise how great characters Grimmer, Tenma, Eva, Lunge were. I'm thankful to Johan coz he always makes me realise how beautiful Grimmer is.
@@Pekara121 it's upto your interpretation. I won't argue you on that matter coz I'd left this teen's nihilism phase long time ago. And I'm now much happier compared to when I tried to be a nihilist. So I think you aren't wrong either.
@@jee098 I totally agree that it's all upto interpretation. Nihilism as an idea might seem grim at first. If nothing matters then why do anything? If someone interprets it that way it would be of no use and only lead to sadness. It could be much more useful if we look at it another way. If life has no meaning then we can give it our own meaning. If nothing matters then it liberates us in a way. I watched a video on 'Optimistic Nihilism' it was pretty interesting.
Awesome video man. There are very few moments in manga that actually got me feeling a bit emotional but Grimmer's last scene was the first one that actually made me cry. I remember thinking "how come i've never heard of this character before? why does no one talk about him?" I'm glad to see there's more people who appreciate him.
I just had my birthday happen and got a tattoo of Grimmer to celebrate. (I’m about to be the left side of that meme, by the way). Grimmer is the most special character to me because I see myself in him. Despite us having different circumstances to lead to our trauma, I also lack a certain level of empathy due to autism as well, but I have always tried to be a nice person to others, just and patient. Usually characters without empathy are portrayed as assholes and creeps, and it’s always led to a sort of depression for me. I only got into Monster this past November, but Grimmer has quite honestly changed my life. I’ve ebbed and flowed between depression and being content my whole life, mostly spending it depressed but throwing on a smile much like Grimmer. It’s hard for me to smile much of the time, but Grimmer is always smiling despite his adversity and I’ve tried adopting the same trait. “Fake it until you make it” is honestly so true in this case. I’ve become a kinder person since being introduced to him, because I look up to him even if he’s a cartoon character. He’s so important to me. I know this sounds unhinged but it’s true. The tattoo I got is a panel from the manga and a caption: “Smile.” I can look down at my arm in the darkest of my times and remember how Grimmer would treat the situation. Sorry if my words are sorta jumbled, I was watching the video the same as I typed so I might have gotten a little confused with what I was trying to say. I just love Grimmer with my whole heart. I want to be Grimmer for others. PS: He’s nice. :)
Always found Grimmer super underrated. Nice to see him finally getting the love he deserves. I also liked when at the end, he said "I did it with my own anger", meaning he beat the monster within him, and acted on his own in his final moments.
Grimmer is essentially a net positive things in Monster universe . He has the capacity to cause incredible violence but chooses not to until when pressured . He expresses the love and kindness which once was lost or not recieved in his case . So ultimately it shows you that you matter no matter the pain .
Even Eva, a despicable woman, was able to gain my heart. She realized what a shallow way of living she chose and actually changed. I love this anime, Naoki Urasawa never disappoints.
I liked Grimmer a lot because he seemed so much different from Johan. While Johan is an emotionless monster who manipulates children into doing horrible things to try to satisfy his own ambitions, Grimmer tried to live a better life, tried to be a better person, tried to enjoy life, and was really kind towards children. It was really sad to see such a great character die. I would love to see a spinoff with him going over the things he went through in his life right until his death. I even kind of respected the Magnificent Steiner within him because to me he felt like a juggernaut of justice taking out horrible people who deserve it like he did during his final act.
"I think I know how the show ended. The Magnificent Steiner...probably became human again." That's easily the most heartbreaking line in all of Monster. And in my opinion, in all of Anime and manga, if you consider the context and all the emotions behind it.
One thing I like about the Monster manga is how it potrays mature characters as the pivotal actors in the story. It shows their acts of weakness, but also strength and bravery. Where manga and anime in general largely focus on an younger cast, the majority of the main characters in Monster and middle-aged and above, making scenes when their act with kids all the more heartfelt. This is especially noticeable with Grimmer.
I watched Monster for the first time last month and my initial reaction to Grimmer was: "I'm gonna like this guy". He did not disappoint. The Magnificent Steiner is real.
Masked, I truly think this is your best video essay. Yes there's a bit of bias cuz it is the magnificent steiner himself. But to perfectly encapsulate his character; you more than succeeded. Truly an amazing character. Those 3 lines about learning to smile, what face he's making when comforting the child and true sadness feels a lot like happiness im finally sad my son died. I think he's my favourite take on emotional complexity in media, period.
Yeah, Grimmer is a completely loveable character. It's the fact that he puts the effort in to be a decent human despite the monstrous things done to him and the monster within. He just cares, but he didn't really feel it until he had given his all for what he wanted so badly, what he always was: a human.
Grimmer is the antithesis of Roberto, they went through the same experience and it made Roberto latch onto and follow Johan, becoming a cold killer, but Grimmer is the opposite, in spite of his traumatic experiences he rose above it all and try to be a good person.
He fucking held it down man. It was so fucking sad seeing what happens to him. I’ll never forget monster, first time I watched it was 2010 and until today I recommend it to anyone who’s into realistic/ psychological anime. This is a master piece
Very well put together video. Monster is a masterpiece and Grimmer is one of the really important characters to show the harshness of the world yet still keeps going. Such a pleasant, forced smile. Really sad but honestly, incredibly well written character.
I think Grimmer is my favorite character as well. I can relate to him most. Due to depression and the like I've bottled up emotions for at least a decade. The moment he was able to feel again was cathartic in ways. I hope I can get there too. I feel like a lot of us bury our problems and just work and get by day to day, but don't truly feel or live. Some of us can do that while from that outside looking in, people will see happy/successful people with a family/loved ones. Then there are others like myself that cannot allow themselves to get close to others and just do not know how to stop being alone. Haven't read the Manga but the anime was awesome; I just finished it today.
Living your whole life with bottled up emotions and not being capable to externalize them is hell. U desperately try to escape from the loneliness, but u can be loved only if u expose yourself and learn to be more intimate with others. Even if the vast majority of them will not have interest, or will try to harm u, u can't let that get to u. Only by not taking that personally, u will find it more and more comfortable to live with yourself, despite what the others think. And then, before u will realize it, u will start to get surrounded by people that actually like u
Masked introduced me to berserk and monster a few years ago, the two stories i now consider the best ive ever seen. So now seeing this video and hearing you call Grimmer the best supporting character got me hype because i agree! Gotta thank you for showing me these masterpieces (and my mom technically too because i showed them to her)
I feel like Grimmer is the most reliable character in this story. Tenma, Anna and Johan are completely obsessed with each other to a point where it's hard to follow as a reader.
There's a great visual metaphor when he first meets Tenma. His bags are so huge, hes getting himself stuck in doorways, and tenmas bag is small enough to only hold his essentials. He spends most of the episode being unable to relax, holding onto the remorse of having to break his Hippocratic oath by shooting Roberto whereas Grimmer is visually carefree and relaxed. Tenmas "sins" were light, yet they weighed heavy on him. Grimmers "sins" were heavy, but he did his best to not let it weigh him down.
I always liked the chubby blonde doc that was Tenmas friend from the start. He was was another underdog character that was cool and devolved well over time.
Saddly, noone can explain any character from Monster, no matter how long the video or how mamy the words, every character in Monster is so deep that noone can say anything to capture everything
Nah man, I'm so happy that you decided to this video on Grimmer. This made me cry again fr😭😭😭. I loved his character and he will always be a fascinating one to me. I agree with you. He's definetely my favorite ❤
Amazing video. I watched Monster for the first time back in January and Grimmer was by far my favourite character. I just love how even though he’s been through so many horrible things- losing his whole identity and emotions- he still tries to treat people with kindness, especially children. That bridge scene got to me a lot. And his death scene where he says his emotions finally came back was so beautiful. I also really liked Lunge as a character even though his whole thing was just being obsessed with Tenma lol. Idk having the detective character be sort-of an antagonist was fun, he reminds me of L from Death Note in that way. I read a really great fic on AO3 that fleshes out both Grimmer and Lunge as characters, as well as the world they live in, it’s called So Much To Say. I’d recommend checking it out, it is slash but it’s not explicit or anything and I’d say the relationship aspect is very tastefully handled.
I really liked how Urasawa wrote Lunge too. Yes he's the best detective in Germany but at what cost? He neglected his family so much they ended up leaving him. He had a cold personality. Always striving to solve cases but was so broken and confused when Tenma wasn't the perpetrator. Watching Lunge slowly recognizing his mistakes and discovering the truth was satisfying to watch.
Holy shit I was just thinking about Grimmer yesterday. It’s crazy how many amazing supporting characters Monster has, on top of having near flawless leads.
Thank you for this! I absolutely loved Grimmer and no matter how much they incorporated him into the story, I wanted more. It's a sign of great writing that such a compelling and interesting character isn't even the protagonist. I wouldn't mind a Grimmer spin off but I think it's probably a bit late for that 😅
I only just recently watched and finished monster and boy im disappointed I didn't see it sooner but god man Grimmer was the one guy I wanted to see live... 😭
I only recently watched monster and l have to say for someone who bothered me a bit at the begging he ended up being one of the best characters in the story and his end was one of the Saddest things l have seen
When I was scrolling through masked man and saw this video I was so happy. Grimmer is not talked about as much as he should be because the antagonist, but imo he's my favorite character in monster.
Bro always tried to help when he knew himself he was someone with power to change how things should be, I loved him a lot, even when things went bad he expected the magnificent Steiner show up but didn't, he had to do it himself to fight the bad guys
I paused this series for over half a year, almost dropped it totally, but when they introduced Grimmer-san I couldn't stop watching. He stole the show! 🧡 I wasn't even expecting to cry over an anime character's death 😢
I feel as though Grimmer is one of the most underrated Monster characters, people usually just pay attention to Johan, but Grimmer has great characterisation whether it be his humanisation or his progression. Great analysis
Wolfgang Grimmer is great as mindset and inspector Lunge is the smartest who found the antagonist in the end by using the book of Bonaparta as key of investigation
Grimmer just exudes Bob Ross energy. You wouldnt really know that they had a rough past because even through that hell they still kept grew as people and have an optimistic outlook in life and a genuine drive to find what they strive. well thats my interpretation of it anyway lol.

Grimmer is seriously my most favorite character in all of anime!
Finally grimer is getting a vid. Suprised i was this early
GRIMMER MY LOVE I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!!
He was always my favorite character in Monster. What a 🐐
Masked introduced me to berserk and monster a few years ago, the two stories i now consider the best ive ever seen.
Finally a video about Grimmer! One of the best manga characters.
Grimmer is such a fascinating character. His personality was a great contrast to that of the rest of the cast
Even without actually seeing monster, watching videos like these really make me want to check it out and really peep it.
You should. It’s peak
Only 74 episodes!
It’s a masterpiece
He’s always literally carrying psychological backlog too ❤
I just finished the monster anime for the first time yesterday
I always liked the chubby blonde doc that was Tenmas friend from the start. He was was another underdog character that was cool and devolved well over time.
Oh Rudi Gillen!!! I liked him too !!!
Monster is in my top 5 anime of all time, this video makes me want to rewatch the series again
Grimmer's story changed my outlook on life
Holy shit I was just thinking about Grimmer yesterday. It’s crazy how many amazing supporting characters Monster has, on top of having near flawless leads.
R.I.P. the Magnificent Steiner ❤
The video is great but I also love what you did with the thumbnail. Really good.
i’m so glad that there are so many people that love grimmer
grimmer the absolute goat
I almost cried at 2 scenes, Grimmers death, and when Lunge visits Grimmers grave going over his life
Great video! I
ve always loved your "greatest ... in anime & manga". Would definitely not mind more.
I'm so hyped, Grimmer is my favorite character in the story, period.
Thank you for this! I absolutely loved Grimmer and no matter how much they incorporated him into the story, I wanted more. It's a sign of great writing that such a compelling and interesting character isn't even the protagonist. I wouldn't mind a Grimmer spin off but I think it's probably a bit late for that 😅
I was crying watching Monster and just completed it.A masterpiece
He was the only character to die without a name.
I only just recently watched and finished monster and boy im disappointed I didn't see it sooner but god man Grimmer was the one guy I wanted to see live... 😭
Made me wanna watch monster again lmao
“Soft spoken version of low tier god” 😭
I only recently watched monster and l have to say for someone who bothered me a bit at the begging he ended up being one of the best characters in the story and his end was one of the Saddest things l have seen
When I was scrolling through masked man and saw this video I was so happy. Grimmer is not talked about as much as he should be because the antagonist, but imo he's my favorite character in monster.
Please make a video on the allegory of the monster who eats everyone, I miss this damn show
My favourite character, not only in that anime but also in whole animanga universe.
i’ve never seen this anime before, now i have to check it out.
Could you make a video about Martin? He’s such a great character but I can’t find a single video about him.
I’m a simple man I see monster content I click
Bro always tried to help when he knew himself he was someone with power to change how things should be, I loved him a lot, even when things went bad he expected the magnificent Steiner show up but didn't, he had to do it himself to fight the bad guys
I paused this series for over half a year, almost dropped it totally, but when they introduced Grimmer-san I couldn't stop watching. He stole the show! 🧡 I wasn't even expecting to cry over an anime character's death 😢
Absolutely incredible video about the best character in one of the best series ever.
One of my Favourite character and you explained it beautifully
FUCK YEAH GRIMMER!!!!
All of my goddamn tears for this perfect man. Genuinely the best part of this already awesome manga!
Magnificent Steiner is a man a cried the most in this show
The title does put a smile on my face
RIP THE MAGNIFICENT STEINER
grimmer will forever be a top 3 character for me, he is just SO amazing
Yeah Grimmer was a special one. Despite everything he chose to be kind to others, thats true strength
i readed title and thought "its grimmer" and i was right
I feel as though Grimmer is one of the most underrated Monster characters, people usually just pay attention to Johan, but Grimmer has great characterisation whether it be his humanisation or his progression. Great analysis
Wolfgang Grimmer is great as mindset and inspector Lunge is the smartest who found the antagonist in the end by using the book of Bonaparta as key of investigation
Lunge and Steiner were my personal favorites.
4:42 johan is soft spoken low tear god 😂😂😂
Finished monster just yesterday and you made a video about the best character in monster today
I just finished Monster 2 weeks ago, and i can confirm Grimmer is a nice guy
Describing Johan as a soft spoken LTG is too funny.
Grimmer just exudes Bob Ross energy. You wouldnt really know that they had a rough past because even through that hell they still kept grew as people and have an optimistic outlook in life and a genuine drive to find what they strive. well thats my interpretation of it anyway lol.
Grimmer was such a goated character.
GRIMMEEEEEEEEER!!! 🔥
