It's because the romance is subtle. Like in real life. They don't go around proclaiming their love for each other. Even to the point where the idea of love is confusing to them. But you know it's there because of what they're willing to sacrifice for it. It's not a story of good versus evil, it's a story about love vs evil. Griffiths dream vs The love Guts feels for his companions. And I think that's really where Guts strength comes from. Sure he's an angry dude but nobody can hate like a man that has known love.

Guts is a compelling protagonist to me personally because - at the end of the day - the guy just wants to find a place for himself in the world and be happy. It's that one desire that still grounds his humanity, no matter what kind of terrible shit he goes through with each arc. And he makes genuine connections with people. He's human, neither wholly good nor wholly bad. Just someone who's looking for happiness in a bleak world.

Guts starts out as a human hurt and destroyed by people, not knowing what love or compassion is, just trying to survive. But his experiences with his first group ignited in him the spark of looking for a reason to live and he learned that it was love. He lost everything and fell into a hole. But he discovered people who taught him things, Guts started as a human, but thanks to love, he matured and became a hero. Unconventional and cruel, but a hero

What makes Guts the greatest protagonist, is that it's not only his story we are reading, it's ours as well; losing loved ones, being betrayed, questioning our own existence, we see facets or moments in our lives within his story and can relate so deeply with him. What make's him so inspirational is that he can carry all that pain and hardship, and still manage to pull through. We grow with Guts both in narrative and a literal sense (waiting months and hiatus'). Guts isn't perfect, and isn't untouchable, but that's what really connects us with him.

      竜神 RyuuJin 불용
Whaaat, Guts has it waaaay easier. He is tall and handsome (85% or real life men are straight out ugly), he is in peak physical condition despite the fact, that he SHOULD be crippled by this point. He doesn't have chronic pains unlike majority of real life people and has impenetrable plot armor. He suffers no genetical hair loss. And on top of that, he has a clear, honorable goal in mind, unlike real life people who just screw around and do random crap until they die.
He is hot, his life has meaning, he has plot armor and his life is not a neverending agony. I'd trade my place with his, any time!

    • @RyuuJinLee
      @RyuuJinLee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@nihilism6226 - “tall and handsome” that’s completely subjective, if he was, the majority of the women in the story would be ogling him all the time.
“Peak physical condition.” Guts looks like he’s in his mid to late 30s, even though he should be early 20s.
“Doesn’t have chronic pain and has impenetrable plot armor.” The brand literally makes him bleed, attracts demons to him every night, and his “impenetrable” plot armour is killing him every time he uses it. Also, if he had plot armour, shouldn’t he be handily winning every encounter?
“He suffers no genetical hair loss” His hair is turning grey at early 20s. Might not be as bad as balding, but that’s still something that isn’t normal.
“Clear honourable goal in mind.” Is getting revenge really that honourable? Is it really that clear to him that he should be seeking revenge, risking it all, when he finally reunited with his partially-mentally recovered loved one?
He’s tall, yes, but average in appearance, he struggle with his existence and finding a meaning to his life.
If you want to live in a living hell, get raped as a child, have no family, have your best friend betray you and kill the only family you ever knew, rape the one you love in front of you, the last thing your right eye would ever witness, lose your left hand, be branded for eternity to end up in hell, be hunted day and night by demons and undead, all the while trying to defy gods and fate itself, go right ahead and trade your life for his.

But having a Casca-like woman with such a brutal yet authentic identity (brutal because before the waterfall scene, Casca was an absolute b*t*h to Guts even tho he always did good things to her, but the fact she changed since she saw that this man was truly something else for her heart, and that she ended up realizing he was the one and got past her traumas to give him her body is just absolutely beautiful and is one of the most strongest proof of love that i could witness in fiction and reality, idc about nun but Casca/Guts is the best romance of all time) is my way to go now, and i can thank Miura-sensei for this. So yeah i think you can understand how much this fictional woman changed my perception of love and romance, she single-handedly made me understand that lust was a trap of the Devil and that her relationship with Guts was the true thing i always wanted : pure, authentic, uninterested and essentially good-intentioned romantic love, in sum i fucking love Casca and Berserk is a masterpiece (lol).

At 10:18 I think you get exactly why Guts is such a well-written, relatable character. His trauma isn't "solved" by falling in love. In poorly written fiction trauma can magically be "solved" by a character falling in love, or finding a purpose in life, or some other plot contrivance. But in reality, trauma doesn't work this way. It's always part of you, and a post-traumatic response can be drawn out of someone for a variety of reasons. If someone is in a good place in life where they have strong relationships, they might be able to deal with their trauma better than they otherwise would - and this happens with Guts as well - but nothing "solves" trauma. Like everything else with Guts, trauma is an endless, lifelong struggle.

I know I can't expect everyone to read it numerous times but it's insane how much subtleties in all aspects that you pick up on when you take your time to read through it. Not to mention the artwork, seriously it's in the pantheon of best of the best. Miura is masterful at what he does, but most importantly he's deliberate. Even chapter 362 which blew so many minds was put into play in Miura's plan LONG before we even reached that point in the story, and I'm talking like 20+ years. The symbolism, psychological & philosophical depth of berserk is incredible. Just go to the channel Spired to see why if you haven't seen it yourself while reading, the manga certainly has its flaws but overall it's one of the most monumental pieces of fiction and artistic work ever produced.

But in reality, he’s doing it because he knows that he’s going to hurt the people around him by knowing him. I realize and understand that the berserk, character guts, spans over well 30 years of hard dedication in writing to upper tag, honest. And I find it to myself and believe it so, that’s the best way to actually make this a live action movie is to go beyond the golden age when he is the black knight and explain it as a three movie trilogy. It has a span over three hours, long a piece to make sense of it. And it would be no different than what George Lucas dead was Star Wars, a new Hope. He set the standard for protagonist, growing in one section, and then, what you do is if it becomes that popular you go to a prequel setting, which is already set for the golden age which would be awesome on itself to be an actual prequel setting, which would be another trilogy at three hours long apiece. And then you would have to go to the sequels after the black knight, so that it is up going into the other archetypes of berserk or should I say guts character to continue the rest of the story to the end Wytchwood equivalent to be 12 movies in total if it’s a live action.
And for everything I’ve dove into and everything I’ve read so far I myself could easily make this one of the most popular characters ever. And I’m not a professional writer or anything I just know how to flush out a character and then give the backstory and then push it forward to make it more extravagant than what you would see in the Lord of the rings. I just believe in myself, that guts is the greatest protagonist of all time! And really, he is a protagonist, but he was also an actual what you would call, anti-hero, and then he groups of character over the Maga books, which, honestly you could just copy the almost the same forum when it comes to the original Star Wars movies from a new Hope to return of the Jedi, and then do the prequel’s to tell the backstory and then if they make enough money in the box office, you finish up or continue the story afterwords all the way from I forgot the name of it the, conviction era to the millennium, falcon to the Fantasia era, which every single stage of guts his character arc would have to be at least three movie with three hour, long, drawn out conclusions to finish the movie fully.
And even at that point, since, sorry, I forgot his name, but the author and artist of berserk should have been able to finish. The stories are to a point where there was a final end regardless of anything. I would hate to see any studio ruining it just because they want to subject, certain ideas and philosophies into it that are the complete garbage stand or in Hollywood. I could do it right incorrectly, but I would need every single source material that you would gain from only the books to make sure you do what is right to begin with.
I would follow every detail, and every character that has encountered guts, and I would make sure that every single, a horrific scene is made no different than what the manga books have given us as an insight to this world. The amount of information and photos and got us a character is what are the greatest characters I’ve ever seen in my life.
And I wish George Lucas knew about this to begin with, because Star Wars would’ve been a lot better. Because the only thing that I love about Star Wars, the most is the original trilogy. And even though the prequel‘s were kinda, OK, that saying very nicely, but the truth is the animated features that were about the clone wars were a lot better to begin with. But when it came to the brand new sequels by Disney, they totally just basically used a paint brush , and instead of adding water to the paint they threw in their own poop and then mix it together to act like that was gonna be good for society. They ruined Star Wars the second that Disney bought it out. Because they were not going to follow the original working Scripps that George Lucas was going to use if he was going to make the sequels which were the ones that JJ Abrams dead and totally ruined.
But if anyone has the right amount of money, and the right amount of producers, which is the money, especially if they have IOM do it, but it needs to be not part of Disney, it Hass to be its own separate cinema company to make berserk as good as it is as the books depicts everything on paperback. Because when it comes to the story itself, there’s so much information when it comes to the actual story itself through drawings, and everything else there’s no way you can really mess this up unless you’re refusing to add certain storylines in there unless you’re trying to ruin the background of the original character. Because without all these bad guys in between, and all the other horrible things that happen, you can’t build upon the character without those people involved that are evil.
Without the evil people, and you remove half of them, the protagonist will seem to be more empty, but not even as profoundly not only persecuted, but also, it seems like on every step of the way they got slims his life has been a complete struggle since he was born as a child.
So my whole point is, if you want to make a live action movie, I wouldn’t know what to do. I would need no more than a few months paid to read everything learn everything and then adapted as an actual Hollywood script that would make billions upon billions of dollars across the entire planet. And I don’t care about the money, I care more about making sure that the character retreated correctly as Guts should be 100%.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

His suffering is what pushes him forward, it's what made him who he was, not the happy moments but the suffering and struggling; because our struggles make us who we are.
Thank you Miura for creating such an amazing character. Thank you, for inspiring Miyazaki to create my favourite game series.

All of the things people state about Guts are true and all but frankly that’s not the reason why I thinks he the greatest and my favorite protagonist of all time. Yes he’s human like you and me, and he has our problems like any other human would, but that just elevates even more why I love Guts as a protagonist. The main reason why I love Guts so much is because I relate to him in so many ways. You see I was born premature, and when I say premature I mean practically 5 months old. And thou I may not have been born out of my mother’s corpse like Guts, I was meant to be like he was if Shisu didn’t adopt him, a waste of air. The doctors told my mom that I wasn’t going to able to see right, I wasn’t going to be able to use my hands correctly, hell I wasn’t even going to be able to walk. I was meant to be nothing but a measly crippled. My mom prayed and struggled to get me the help I needed to prove to not only the doctors, but the entire world that they were wrong about me. And guess what they were so wrong about what my fate was meant to be. Just like Guts I fought against the odds and had help from the people I cared about to face the odds. That’s why I love Guts so much, because he’s just like you and me, a struggler, fighting day in and day out to prove to the world that they are wrong about us.

A manga you might want to take a look at is "Dungeon Meshi" or its Localisation name "Delicious in Dungeon". The quick run down is its a old school DND/Japanese RPG setting in which the main cast cook and eat the monsters of the dungeon they are in. No Isekai stuff, the main cast are actual parts of the world with their own history.

I love how you can make a very valid argument for basically everything in berserk to be the greatest of all time.
    - the greatest protagonist of all time
    - the greatest antagonist(s) of all time
    - the greatest side characters/supporting cast of all time
    - the greatest story and character development of all time
    - the greatest arc of all time
    - the greatest fights of all time
    - the greatest world-building of all time
    - the greatest love story of all time?
probably not, but the fact that you can make a fairly good argument with all of these for a manga that's not even finished yet is truly impressive. It baffles me that some people don't even have berserk in their top 5. Truly the goat.

Berserk is such a good story because they can have a scene where a man is choking out a woman, and have it be one of the most tragic and heartbreaking moments and make you empathize with the guy doing the choking. If you just walked into a irl scene where that was happening, you'd be like, wtf are you doing man, get off of her! Damn man, you got some problems.
Most series couldn't even put a scene like that, let alone give it so much depth for both of the characters. It's the epitome of nuance and understanding a scene for what it is saying rather than what it seems to represent at face value.
