She proposed to her father Jaeharys I that she’d marry all three of them like Maegor did with his wives-which was exactly the wrong button to push with the king since Maegor murdered two of his brothers. After this and after she tried to steal a dragon he killed one of her lovers in a duel while forcing her to watch then tried to send her to become a silent sister (which was mentioned as likely being an empty threat). She escaped and fled to Essos and may still be alive. I’m sure if she heard she’d be laughing hysterically at one of her sons claiming her father’s dragon

They are few people even in modern society who would be willing to accept Sarah’s behavior let alone a medieval one. Not to mention she’s royalty, which despite what people think, has massive restrictions and repercussions for acting impulsively.
She didn't just "flee" to Essos, she paid for her passage with sex, then became a sex worker in a Lysene brothel, then eventually ended up the madam of a high-class brothel in Volantis(?). She couldn't have shamed her father and her family more if she'd organised and starred in a mass orgy in Flea Bottom.

Baelon was next in line after Aemon's death but died essentially from appendicitis before his father, Jaehaerys, died which is why Viserys got the crown. Daella Targaryen married Rodrik Arryn and they had Aemma Arryn, Viserys's first wife who died during childbirth in episode 1 of HotD. Daella herself died from childbirth, I can't remember if it was directly from childbirth but I'm sure it was related even if months later. Saera Targaryen was a troublemaker and slept around a lot. She eventually worked in a brothel across the narrow sea due to being abandoned by her parents. It's her that I'm sure they're referring to when Hugh talks about his mother. The 2 Dragons at the end, Vermithor and Silverwing, were King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne's dragon's respectively. They have a long ass history together (Nearly 100 years at this point) and are likely the 2 dragons that have the closest bond to one another, essentially lovers as Jaehaerys and Alysanne were to each other. Before Jaehaerys died there was an important council meeting deciding how the rules of inheritance and successions should work which boiled down to them deciding that the crown can't pass to a female or her kids while a male relative still lives. Viserys kind of overruled this when it acknowledged Rhaenyra as his successor despite a younger male sibling being born. By the way, Silverwing loves human interaction and she tends to get lonely more than other dragons without human companionship. Silverwing is a sweetie.

She has a young dragon's nature, as if she never outgrew the desire to play with others present in dragons when they are small, and since Targaryeans claiming a dragon is treated so seriously, approached as a holy event, and ceremoniously, I felt that possibly, Silverwing shunned the attempts to claim her BECAUSE they were so serious. She just wants to goof off and play, and here come these oh so serious humans with their silly ceremonies and chanting, and all she wants is someone that entertains her with fun and silliness. I like to imagine that every dragon is looking for something specific in whoever they choose as a rider. Hugh has so much frustrated, pent-up anger that he channels towards honorable ends. It makes sense that Vermithor would recognize that. Possibly saying: "I respect your ferocity and fearlessness. You may... boop my snoot."
I loved how both dragons fitt the personality of their riders and Larys is pushing Aegon's recovery so hard because he wants him to be king again as soon as possible

They haven't had riders in like 30 years, Silverwing is very slender, vermithor isn't much faster and from what we've seen, Vhagar is pretty much equally as mean lol, and Syrax is...well you get it. If victory against Vhagar was certain, rhaenyra just could've chased him down. But she knows that its not a guarantee.

If they descended upon KL while Vhagar was napping in the field, she wouldn't even be able to take flight fast enough to stop them. Can you actually picture Vhagar killing multiple dragons one by one and surviving? Including Vermithor? I can't picture it. At best Vhagar kills two or three, dies, and the blacks still have dragons. Daeron is away and Helaena isn't about that life... The show also nerfed Silverwing's size but that's fine. They still have more than enough firepower, but obviously things will happen before they attack KL.
Thank you for pointing out (with Aegon) that there's a difference between "this character is a horrible person" and "you can still feel sympathy for a horrible person". Too many people think presenting a horrible person in a sympathetic situation means condoning what the horrible person has done.

I'm not going to spoil what happens but it's interesting how different they've made Hugh Hammer from his book version. In the book Hugh is selfish, power-hungry, and a womanizer but in the show he's the opposite, a family man and selfless, willing to sacrifice himself to save that woman from being Vermithor's next snack.

I'm not sure how common the name Ulf is in Westeros, but in our world it's a normal nordic name (meaning Wolf), similar to other animal names Orm (=Worm i.e. snake - or dragon) and Bjørn (=Bear). So now we have a wolf riding a dragon. Now I'm wondering GRRM chose the name Ulf rather than Orm. He has chosen animal names with direct significance before (Bran suggests Celtic Brân = Raven).

The actor who plays Hugh says it's funny how everyone thinks Hugh acted bravely to save the woman from the dragon - in his mind, Hugh wasn't being brave, he was being competitive; he didn't want the dragon to choose her, so he drew the dragon's attention away from her to himself.
The moment when Oscar commanded Daemon to dispense justice and he realized he had no choice but to comply. I think that was the first time that Daemon has ever really felt the weight of the crown.
Aegon needs to stand and look like a king again. The longer he remains in bed, the easier it is for Aemond to kill him. He has a lot of work he needs to get done "before he may rest again"

Shogun is miles ahead of House of the Dragon ,this season was mediocre at best .So far we had like 2 OK episodes ,everything else is pure filler to milk the audiance .Daemon sitting 4 episodes in Harrenhall getting high and drunk is not the epitome of a great character /plot/action figure etc.
She just wanted to live the same life as men do, sleeping with anyone she wants and carouse, especially since she can just use contraceptives anyway. Alas, stupid gender roles.

Oscar Tully performance in that circle talk, kinda reminded me of Lyanna Mormont when she spoke to the northerners. A young person, reminding the older ones of their oaths, and just OWNING the scene completely ❤️❤️ I think Daemons visions will stop, when he gives up his dream/quest for the crown for himself, reaffirms his allegiance to Rhaenyra and provides her with the army of the riverfolk. Man the dragon basterd lottery is harsh. Rhaenyra was sooo hot this episode. I almost forgot she pashed the other magnetically atractive character last episode. Phenomenal acting. Her face and posture just perfect. She IS the dragon Queen.

An interesting meta commentary in this episode is Jace’s fear and resentment about losing his perceived dragon (nerd) status in the face of the new, lowborn riders.

According to the lore as I recall Hugh's mother Saera Targaryen sister of Baelon Targaryen, Visery's and Daemon's father. She was "Free Spirited" and King Jaehaerys an the family disowned her, she was not a bastard (given this episodes theme). Vermithor is fierce and so must be his rider.
I've been seeing people complain about the Daemon bits but personally I'm also loving Fear and Loathing in Harrenhal. I loved the dream stuff in asoiaf, and I think it works really well for an obstinate character like Daemon, who is hard-pressed to change under normal circumstances.
On the scene where Hugh becomes a dragon rider to Vermithor this quote from the books plays in my head: "Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?' 'That is the only time a man can be brave.' His father told him."
The books never reveal who Hugh and Ulf's Targaryan parent/ancestor is so they show pretty much gets free reign on how to connect them. Ulf could also possibly be one of Saera's bastards, as she had 3 confirmed children. Now we know Hugh is one of them so they could be half brothers.
I think what changed between the Conquest, when Visenya was alive, and now is the Targaryens being influenced by the local Andal cultures (who are very patriarchal) and several generations of peace and prosperity. Visenya was a warrior Queen (and Vhagar's former rider) who fought alongside Aegon the Conqueror and so was expected to fight, but she was also known and is remembered for being very brutal, her son Maegor the Cruel, who usurped the throne, was a likewise a brutal tyrant that would make Aemond or Tywin blush. So Jace saying it was a long time ago is saying it was a very different era, and that Visenya isn't as well loved as Aegon or Rhaenys (Aegon's other sister wife and the namesake of our Rhaenys and Rhaenyra). Also, it was a joy to watch Oscar outplay Daemon. Daemon isn't popular with the Riverlords, and only Willem has pledged himself to Daemon personally, and so getting Daemon to execute Willem himself alienates the Blackwoods from Daemon while solidifying the rest of the lords under Oscar. Jace's position is understandable, Targaryens only hold power because they have dragons, and his position is questioned because he lacks the Targaryen looks, and he can only contest this due to having a dragon of his own. But now they're handing out dragons to a bunch of bastards, some of whom will look more Targaryen than he does, and expect them, or their children, to remain loyal and not claim power for themselves in the event they're victorious. This move may end this war but could also sow the seeds to an even worse one down the line.

may i suggest looking into digital upload from local library to get a book by Rebecca Yarros titled (Fourth Wing) its a really good book about dragons and the training of theyre riders. I think you will really like one of the main characters. I did audio book first ( library is free) then bought the book. (im a dork that likes to own books)
Truth does not matter, *perception* does. What puts Rhaenyra's "Velaryon" children above base accusations are dragons. What puts Targaryens themselves above other noble houses are dragons. Allowing other noble houses to have dragons is extremely dangerous. Allowing baseborn to have dragons is perilous. So Jace is entirely correct, it's a downright *insane* risk. And puts Rhaenyra's inheritance in a terrible situation.
Sea smoke at the start is a funny scene. He moves to protect his new "rider" despite another dragon being present. Almost like it's sea smokes toy and no one else can play with it. Also mention of the scene with viserys and also the looks of vermithor and silver wing. Remember they are paired dragons. Paired for life.

Plus she calms vermithor and seems to be able to sense that the dragon understands he needs to pick a rider. Perhaps sea smoke yearns for such a bond. Remember he was restless all season. He's picked the closest family to his old rider he could have found.

Slight correction about bastard names - most smallfolk don't have last names at all, even bastard names. If they need a qualifier, it'll either be something like "of Hull" (Addam and Alyn's "last name") or it'll be a nickname. Bastard names are for highborn bastards. So Jon is Jon Snow, and Alys is Alys Rivers, but bastards of low birth don't get bastard names. If Corlys wants Alyn or Addam to be legitimized they would be known as Velaryon.
I'm worried that the deaths of all these people attempting to become dragon riders will make the people who hear about it fear Rhaenyra as a manipulator rather than a trustworthy queen. That the food offered to them was a ploy to endear them to her so that they would be more ready to sacrifice themselves in a dragon lottery lol. Either way, I'm eager to see how access to a dragon changes the behavoir of someone like Ulf or Hugh. They may not have shown themselves to be "bad guys", but neither have they shown themselves to desire serving Rhaenyra. Addam's the only one with that sort of devotion displayed so far.
The "well done" to Adam from Corlys is more important that I think you realize, That Well done, held deep meaning for Adam, nothing really more need be said.

I like to imagine that every dragon is looking for something specific in whoever they choose as a rider. Hugh has so much frustrated, pent-up anger that he channels towards honorable ends. It makes sense that Vermithor would recognize that. Possibly saying: "I respect your ferocity and fearlessness. You may... boop my snoot."
I loved how both dragons fitt the personality of their riders and Larys is pushing Aegon's recovery so hard because he wants him to be king again as soon as possible

They haven't had riders in like 30 years, Silverwing is very slender, vermithor isn't much faster and from what we've seen, Vhagar is pretty much equally as mean lol, and Syrax is...well you get it. If victory against Vhagar was certain, rhaenyra just could've chased him down. But she knows that its not a guarantee.
@@sarwatarannya8786 Well, I think that's hyping Vhagar too much considering what happens to Vhagar in the text. And why three? The blacks have more than three dragons. If they descended upon KL while Vhagar was napping in the field, she wouldn't even be able to take flight fast enough to stop them.
Can you actually picture Vhagar killing multiple dragons one by one and surviving? Including Vermithor? I can't picture it. At best Vhagar kills two or three, dies, and the blacks still have dragons. Daeron is away and Helaena isn't about that life...
The show also nerfed Silverwing's size but that's fine. They still have more than enough firepower, but obviously things will happen before they attack KL.
Thank you for pointing out (with Aegon) that there's a difference between "this character is a horrible person" and "you can still feel sympathy for a horrible person". Too many people think presenting a horrible person in a sympathetic situation means condoning what the horrible person has done.
That title screen made me imagine a world in which the Stormlight Archive books get an expensive, well made streaming series adaptation. I very much want to live in that world.

I'm not going to spoil what happens but it's interesting how different they've made Hugh Hammer from his book version. In the book Hugh is selfish, power-hungry, and a womanizer but in the show he's the opposite, a family man and selfless, willing to sacrifice himself to save that woman from being Vermithor's next snack.
Makes you really wonder if they are going to change his storyline completely or if they are going to find a way to work it into the story

I'm not sure how common the name Ulf is in Westeros, but in our world it's a normal nordic name (meaning Wolf), similar to other animal names Orm (=Worm i.e. snake - or dragon) and Bjørn (=Bear). So now we have a wolf riding a dragon. Now I'm wondering GRRM chose the name Ulf rather than Orm. He has chosen animal names with direct significance before (Bran suggests Celtic Brân = Raven).
I have a feeling Hugh as a cousin to the king and a dragon rider will cause heir drama next season.

Shogun is miles ahead of House of the Dragon ,this season was mediocre at best .So far we had like 2 OK episodes ,everything else is pure filler to milk the audiance .Daemon sitting 4 episodes in Harrenhall getting high and drunk is not the epitome of a great character /plot/action figure etc.

According to the lore as I recall Hugh's mother Saera Targaryen sister of Baelon Targaryen, Visery's and Daemon's father. She was "Free Spirited" and King Jaehaerys an the family disowned her, she was not a bastard (given this episodes theme). Vermithor is fierce and so must be his rider.

Kinda feels like everyone else is running around doing stuff while Daemon is just sitting in his bedroom rewatching season 1
I've been seeing people complain about the Daemon bits but personally I'm also loving Fear and Loathing in Harrenhal. I loved the dream stuff in asoiaf, and I think it works really well for an obstinate character like Daemon, who is hard-pressed to change under normal circumstances.
On the scene where Hugh becomes a dragon rider to Vermithor this quote from the books plays in my head:
"Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?' 'That is the only time a man can be brave.' His father told him."
The books never reveal who Hugh and Ulf's Targaryan parent/ancestor is so they show pretty much gets free reign on how to connect them. Ulf could also possibly be one of Saera's bastards, as she had 3 confirmed children. Now we know Hugh is one of them so they could be half brothers.
I think what changed between the Conquest, when Visenya was alive, and now is the Targaryens being influenced by the local Andal cultures (who are very patriarchal) and several generations of peace and prosperity. Visenya was a warrior Queen (and Vhagar's former rider) who fought alongside Aegon the Conqueror and so was expected to fight, but she was also known and is remembered for being very brutal, her son Maegor the Cruel, who usurped the throne, was a likewise a brutal tyrant that would make Aemond or Tywin blush. So Jace saying it was a long time ago is saying it was a very different era, and that Visenya isn't as well loved as Aegon or Rhaenys (Aegon's other sister wife and the namesake of our Rhaenys and Rhaenyra).
Also, it was a joy to watch Oscar outplay Daemon. Daemon isn't popular with the Riverlords, and only Willem has pledged himself to Daemon personally, and so getting Daemon to execute Willem himself alienates the Blackwoods from Daemon while solidifying the rest of the lords under Oscar.
Jace's position is understandable, Targaryens only hold power because they have dragons, and his position is questioned because he lacks the Targaryen looks, and he can only contest this due to having a dragon of his own. But now they're handing out dragons to a bunch of bastards, some of whom will look more Targaryen than he does, and expect them, or their children, to remain loyal and not claim power for themselves in the event they're victorious. This move may end this war but could also sow the seeds to an even worse one down the line.

may i suggest looking into digital upload from local library to get a book by Rebecca Yarros titled (Fourth Wing) its a really good book about dragons and the training of theyre riders. I think you will really like one of the main characters. I did audio book first ( library is free) then bought the book. (im a dork that likes to own books)
If I remember correctly there a 3 wild dragons on Dragon Stone. One is called the cannibal.
Truth does not matter, *perception* does. What puts Rhaenyra's "Velaryon" children above base accusations are dragons. What puts Targaryens themselves above other noble houses are dragons. Allowing other noble houses to have dragons is extremely dangerous. Allowing baseborn to have dragons is perilous.
So Jace is entirely correct, it's a downright *insane* risk. And puts Rhaenyra's inheritance in a terrible situation.
Sea smoke at the start is a funny scene. He moves to protect his new "rider" despite another dragon being present. Almost like it's sea smokes toy and no one else can play with it.
Also mention of the scene with viserys and also the looks of vermithor and silver wing. Remember they are paired dragons. Paired for life.
So Hugh is stuck with Ulf

@patrickwaldeck6681 syrax has a much deeper bond with Rhaenyra. Remember when she was birthing last season finale. Plus she calms vermithor and seems to be able to sense that the dragon understands he needs to pick a rider. Perhaps sea smoke yearns for such a bond. Remember he was restless all season. He's picked the closest family to his old rider he could have found.

Slight correction about bastard names - most smallfolk don't have last names at all, even bastard names. If they need a qualifier, it'll either be something like "of Hull" (Addam and Alyn's "last name") or it'll be a nickname. Bastard names are for highborn bastards. So Jon is Jon Snow, and Alys is Alys Rivers, but bastards of low birth don't get bastard names. If Corlys wants Alyn or Addam to be legitimized they would be known as Velaryon.
I'm worried that the deaths of all these people attempting to become dragon riders will make the people who hear about it fear Rhaenyra as a manipulator rather than a trustworthy queen. That the food offered to them was a ploy to endear them to her so that they would be more ready to sacrifice themselves in a dragon lottery lol.
Either way, I'm eager to see how access to a dragon changes the behavoir of someone like Ulf or Hugh. They may not have shown themselves to be "bad guys", but neither have they shown themselves to desire serving Rhaenyra. Addam's the only one with that sort of devotion displayed so far.

The "well done" to Adam from Corlys is more important that I think you realize, That Well done, held deep meaning for Adam, nothing really more need be said.
If the next episode would be The Battle of the Gaunt, I not think that Jace would have to worry much about his claim being challenge by other people.
